Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water
This series is perhaps most well known for being the anime that *a-hem* "inspired" Disney to make their Atlantis movie. Whether you've seen the Disney movie or not, Nadia is pretty good and well worth watching.
Jean is a young inventor in late 1800s France who meets and helps out Nadia, a young woman near his own age. They are pursued by a trio of jewel thieves (that remind me a lot of Team Rocket) who are trying to steal Nadia's pendant. Eventually they meet up with Captain Nemo (yes, that Captain Nemo) and find the lost underwater city of Atlantis. That's when stuff starts getting real.
Cyber Coil
Cyber Coil was very well received in Japan but as far as I can tell, for some odd reason never got licensed in English outside of Australia. You could call it Ghost in the Shell by way of Studio Ghibli. The show takes place in an city that is acting as a testing ground for experimental augmented reality technology (with the help of special glasses). The protagonists are young kids who hack the augmented reality by taking advantages of glitches that appear, eventually uncovering a conspiracy about what's really going on behind the curtain with with all the AR stuff.
The Adventures of Mini-Goddess
Everybody knows and likes Oh! My Goddess, but this spinoff series doesn't get near as much love. The premise is that sometimes the goddess sisters sometimes get bored and shrink themselves really small, usually having tiny adventures with Gan, a mouse who lives at the shrine and is in love with Belldandy. (Who isn't, though?) These adventures usually end up poorly for Gan.
The episodes are short and silly and a great palate-cleanser if you've been watching something dark or depressing.
s-CRY-ed
At first glance this seems like a fairly generic fighting anime, and while it does employ a few of the regular tropes and cliches, I feel it manages to set itself apart in others. A lot of the superpowers involved are actually quite inventive and there are a ton of great fights. Some of the fights get downright brutal once the fighters involved start running out of power and have to resort to fists.
The setting isn't terribly original: Weird extra-dimensional explosion... yadda, yadda, yadda... people appearing with superpowers... blah, blah, blah... secret government conspiracy... no sé que, no sé cuanto... random dude who never gives up has to fight EVERYBODY.
But, as with most good stories it's not the plot outline that makes it enjoyable but the execution. Most of the characters are likable, there's lots of good character development, and some great intrigue. Highly recommended.
Bamboo Blade
A sports anime following a school's kendo club. There's not much more story to it besides most of them being relative noobs giving it their best and training to do well at the big tournament.
Now, I'm not a big sports anime fan but I was really surprised by how much I liked Bamboo Blade. The characters are interesting and there's a nice balance of serious and silly. There's much more silly than I was expecting, to be honest, but it works to the show's benefit.
Bobobo-bo Bobo-bo
As the title implies, this show is complete nonsense. Really. The picture shown is literally one of the most normal, comprehensible parts of the show. Every scene is a mindscrew and a half and it only gets worse/better/weirder as the show progresses. But if you like absurdist humor, you'll probably love Bobobo.
The background story, inasmuch as it matters, is that Emperor Baldy-Bald has taken over the world and made it illegal for anyone to have hair. Bobobo-bo Bobo-bo is a hero with a huge blonde afro and magical prehensile nose hairs who fights the tyranny of Baldy-Bald. That's the most sense this series makes.
Definitely an acquired taste.
Kamichu!
One morning Yurie wakes up and realizes that she's suddenly become a Kami. So she and her friends set out to discover just what she can do. Along the way she meets spirits, other Kami, and even an alien, all while learning to deal with the responsibilities of being a Kami that people can easily approach for help.
Kamichu feels like what you would get if Hayao Miyazaki had made series instead of movies. This series is incredibly cute but not really in a "kawaii" way. You just... you just gotta watch it. Seriously, put this show at the top of your list of stuff to watch. It's cute, funny, and beautifully animated with historically accurate representations of Onomichi, Japan, circa 1983-1984.
Thanks for making it this far. If you liked this list, you might like the others I've made.

lesser known anime list
NERDRAGEohacat
Random trivia: the character designer for Nadia (Yoshiyuki Sadamoto) also did the Evangelion characters. Shinji's design is based on Nadia.
dragonsscorn
I don't think I've seen s-CRY-ed on one of these lists before. Awesome anime and was one of my first that wasn't Pokemon/Digimon
LadyIsmene
Nadia was pretty known in the 90es here in Germany :)
DemonKiller44
I heard Bobobo-bo-bobobo is apprently a really elaborate pun that doesn't translate into English
fozzibab
Scryed has one of the best last-episodes of any anime I've seen in 30 years of watching it. Just one long bad-ass fight for 24 minutes.
DrIvoRobotnik
I still love that the Evangelion manga tells you how to draw Shinji and says "just draw a male Nadia"
TheDevourerOfCake
I rewatched s-CRY-ed recently and it's just like I remember it from when I was a kid sneaking out to watch it on adult swim late at night.
scottpilgrimshonduranfriend
Exactly what I'd do haha. I think it's time for a rewatch marathon.
RedRaptor
I'd say older anime than lesser-known. Nadia is fairly iconic if not for the intro alone. At least three others are also pretty popular.

You had me at Bobobo-bo Bobo-bo +1

Nadia and Oh! My Goddess were very popular in the 90s. There are still OMG date sims around the internets.

I don't like sports anime but Bamboo Blade was really good. Also a good list. Have some upvote.

Bamboo blade <3 I wanted another season dammit!

It's funny, I was thinking of s-CRY-ed the past week but forgot the name of it. I liked Bamboo Blade too so I might check this list out!
aPokal
Nah, disneys inspiration was the Stargate movie with Kurt Russell.
coinich
I love both movies, but yeah, they are basically the exact same thing.
uggybug
Great list. So happy to see Nadia and Dennou Coil on one of these.

Nadia herself is a huge cunt though.
keyblader1985
I've always wanted to see that one.
Bishca
Except for the filler - god that series took a sharp turn into shitty. Such a shame too since it was so damn good.
gunsight1
Nice thing tho is you can skip the filler, which is all contained in the island ark, and go right back into the main plot goodness
DanishModernistheBestModern
It was directed by Hideaki Anno who more famously directed Neon Genesis Evangelion.
gunsight1
Yep, indeed. And also another good series, Gunbuster.
Digsby
Fun fact: Shinji Ikari from Evangelion is a gender swapped Nadia.
Pinguburger
I had a huge crush on Nadia.
MrMcNikle
You may be interested to know theres a Naruto/Nadia hentai parody called Love Ninja.

Yeah I stumble on this one by accident long ago. It's not great. Thanks anyway.

I vaguely remember it's appearance on [AS] and a certain chaotic neutral character that is hallmark generic favorite anime material
GrendelTown
The original 3 punch man
Catchiest20Two
His only weakness is a guy who can take 4 punches
GrendelTown

s-CRY-ed is so absurdly shounen and over the top it becomes glorious, Kind of like Gao Gai Gar, or Gaiking Legend of Daikyuu Maryuu.
Kayayayaya
Oh man GGG. I haven't watched that in a while.
PolarHailStorm
Don't forget Sengoku Basara. Better wield SIX KATANAS in battle.
Howlingowl
I remember there was a minor character who’s superpower was just to manifest a race car out of thin air. So fucking ridiculous, but that’s why I loved it

Bobobo-bo Bobo-bo has a US TV showing, it shouldn't count here.
Spamamdorf
Title only says lesser known
Rinnosuke
When it comes to anime, a US TV release disqualifies them from being lesser known, so few titles make it to US TV
Sklumlord
I remember watching an episode of it here or there when I was in like.. middle school and thinking it was the weirdest shit I've ever seen
gamebrain89
Bobobo and FLCL are fun trips, Just sheer insanity.
EmmettTaylor
Australia as well, i loved that show
Rinnosuke
Eh, you guys get more then us anyway, it's kind of the tradeoff for bad intenet.
Thordis424
it used to be on Dutch TV as well
LadyWidebottom
When was it on in Australia?
scpredmage
When you weren't watching.

Is it a show you would enjoy if you were stoned?

Based on my limited experience in this field, absolutely.

Better get to it then!

Trigun is one of those anime that are famous, yet not many people watched it
Cere4l
really? i dont think i know anyone who hasnt seen it... granted that might be just a result of me pushing it on anyone who says they havent
Sheepyhead
I tried watching it twice, both times I just kinda stopped. Dunno why
TryingNotToComment
I got super into storyline, i'm reading whole manga rn, and theres also a 2010 film which i highly recommend even if you didn't finish anime
Sheepyhead
I didn't dislike it, but it wasn't really super interesting to me either
TryingNotToComment
I dunno, i really liked it. episode 17 is the point from which the real shit starts to happen.
Sheepyhead
See, that's too far in for me. Kinda like how Kill la Kill absolutely died after like two episodes.
