Thank you for this! So basically modern damascus is double ignorance: they used to call wootz steel damascus but were wrong in doing so 1/2

2/2: and then centuries later other guys tried to recreate that steel by producing patter-welded steel, still wrong but the term stayed :)

It is, we have yet to recreate it, now its a buzz word for pattern welded. It is annoying that the misinformation is spreading.

Thats a bit of a folk tale. I don't think it was lost, but just a crappy way to make steel. IIRC japan has/had super crappy iron with(1/2)

tons of imperfections, damascus steel was the best/only way to make a blade that wasn't awful, as more advanced metal processing was (2/3)

developed/acquired and the imperfections could be removed they started using methods like europe that produced a higher quality steel. (3/3)

The exact alloy recipe was lost but we approximate the pattern welding process. True Damascus had carbon tubes and I don't think we do yet
