I had a different solution: I went indoor skydiving. Indoors, we can do all the aerobatic tricks that outdoor skydiving affords. The only thing missing is the threat of imminent death (and maybe bragging rights). Oh yeah, I bet indoor skydiving is also more economical than outdoor, so we can do it longer for the same coin.
Congratulations on stepping out of the comfort zone to try something new! I went skydiving last month, I personally had a blast, but one of my friends had a very similar take away. She was glad she did, but said she will not do it again, she liked the parachute part, but not the free fall. It's an awesome thing to experience, but it's definitely not for everyone. Glad you guys had fun, it's a great way to forge an everlasting memory.
Thank you and congratulations right back at you! Yeah, the free fall was awful. I didn’t fight the instructor at the door of the plane but he definitely gave me a “gentle” nudge out of it.
"While many people suffer from a fear of heights when climbing ladders or standing close to the edge of a building, oddly enough skydiving does not trigger this same reaction. Ladders and buildings can triggers your sense of depth, being so close to the edge makes you nervous about falling."
I have acrophobia. It took me a long time to be okay with flying; ultimately it's because I tell myself continually in an aircraft that 'I have no control. If the worst happens, it happens. My end will be swift and painless. Just breathe. I accept my fate. I embrace death.' Now, if I try to climb a ladder or anything like that, I immediately get ice cold feet and hands, my vision starts to tunnel, and if I'm high enough, I'll turn green and pass out.
I once worked on the 32 floor of a building in Chicago. My office was along the window. Big storm came in and my window got sucked out of the building while I was working. My office is now in my basement.
As someone who did it long time ago, I would say the thrill nd the magnificient view are unmatched. But the selling point I would say would be that it feels like you have an adrenaline "high" for the rest of the day haha.
yea, the first time i stepped onto the steel grating while being 200 feet in the air and looked down... it was scary, but i was able to get past it. i dont like heights, im not afraid of them. the one thing thats sure to give me panic attacks is asking for help with something i think will improve my life.
just noticed - ya'll are in street clothes ? They made everyone put on a flight suit for my jump. Gave us the same ultra-tight goggles. (The flight suit did make you feel like "Top Gun" though)
Yeah! It was weird! My husband had been a few times before and he wore the flight suit as well. The place that we went to told us to wear long sleeves and pants.
I have also jumped at this location. They have flight suits, but I think you have to ask for one, or they give you one if you have on bad attire for jumping. I jumped wearing my street cloths, shirt and pants. I found it to be very comfortable, I was glad I didn't have to wear a suit.
I'm bad with heights, but love the outdoors. Used to go backpacking a lot. Had, literally, to climb on my belly to precipices to look over while my friends were just standing there. Also did rock climbing, which I recommend. If you stay on belay, and if you provide belay services, you learn to trust your friends and the ropes and be able to focus on the climb and the view.
I have mild vertigo if I step on a ladder and look down but was completely fine at my jump this summer. One of the best experiences in my life. That's the plane and us deploying
Ya, if it wasn't so expensive I'd like to try a bunch of indoor skydiving sessions but even though I'm not particularly afraid of heights there's no way I'm jumping out of a plane with a rag on my back
For the adrenaline. It's a feeling that is quite unique. It's not at all what I expected. I thought it would be like an intense amusement ride where you feel your heart going in your throat as you accelerate but it didn't. It's pure elation that lasts for minutes if not hours after landing. My free fall was 60 seconds but even after deploying you control the parachute and if you initiate a turn the parachute comes slightly lower than you and you get this sensation again.
So Im curious, as I cant fly on planes anymore without panic attacks (was totally fine with it up until age 30 then major anxiety/depression hit) - did doing this actually make you less scared now or is the fear the same but you overcame it anyway?
I’m so sorry, I know how debilitating it can be via anxiety. I’m really lucky where I haven’t had any issues on planes outside of being nervous during turbulence. So it didn’t help or hurt.
When I went skydiving, the instructor put us into a super tight spin as we parachuted down, for “fun.” It made me extremely motion sick and dizzy and I yakked profusely once we were on the ground. Totally ruined it for me lol
Same. I loved the skydiving part, it was awesome, but he did a tight spin right before landing and I puked for 2 hours afterwards. 10/10 would do it again (with a lot of dramamine, though)
There is no sensation of "falling", but there is one of drowning, insofar as air is forced into your nose faster than you normally take it in, so it feels like you are drowning. No fun. Then the chute popped and it was peaceful and quiet down to the ground. I did not enjoy sky diving, but one off the bucket list.
EveryUsernameIsTaken4
Damn, that's like conquering fear of spiders by diving into a dry well brimming with spiders.
Quasipickle
From the thumbnail, I thought Sean William Scott and Jenna Fischer were going skydiving.

Unless that plane has lost a wing or is on fire, I'm not jumping

Fear has nothing to do with the falling, it's the sudden stop at the end..

So weird, I didn’t realize I look like pam. I’ll take the compliment though.
scaredshirtless
Remember, if at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.
GrumpyOldMan55
A fear of heights is rational. I therefore will not be jumping out of a perfectly good airplane.
PballQhead
There is no such thing as a perfectly good airplane.
jursamaj
It depends. There is a healthy fear of height, and then there is phobia.
mikecaa
I once worked on the 32 floor of a building in Chicago. My office was along the window. Big storm came in and my window got sucked out of the building while I was working. My office is now in my basement.

I would not do it! Fair play to you!

How's your husband's arm? My arm also is often the subject of stress control.
buffywho
Haha, I keep my nails pretty short. I think he’s okay?
PorneliusHubertII
I want to go skydiving, but at 6'3" 280lbs, im apparently too big to fall from a plane safely.
DobryPolak
I just woke up, still groggy, and thought "oh look, Pam from The Office went skydiving". Neat.
Bigemedic
I'm not afraid of heights. I'm afraid of widths.
landbaronness42
Apparently I’m afraid of the vast. Heights, huge ocean waves, whales, outer space, tornadoes. Big stuff.
UsernamesAreStupidAnyways
Well, it's not really the height - or the fall - that's something to worry about. It's that sudden stop at the end
parkydiver
Congrats - that's on my bucket list to try too, for the same reason

I don't get the appeal of winter. Yet, inexplicably, the Northeast US has way more people than anywhere else in the US. To each their own, I suppose

Do you feel like you conquered your fear? or just gave it a big FU this one time?
buffywho
I wouldn’t do it again, ever. I do feel like I conquered my fear and have bragging rights now, per se. lol
RhinestoneSouron
I also have a fear of heights. Done a tandem jump to try and cure myself. Didn't work. Done 2 bungee jumps. Didn't work either.
buffywho
Bungee jumping sounds worse to me somehow. I don’t think I could do that.
ChelVanin
It’s not the heights I’m afraid of. It’s hitting the ground.
ThatBobbyG
I’m more afraid of the thoughts on the way down.
notyoubizness
Why worry? That part doesn't last very long.
TwiceK
Til like, 1000 feet away, you really don't feel like the ground is coming at you that quickly. Then stuff starts to feel very close, very quickly
simplefishy
You’re always going to hit the ground, it’s the velocity that’s important
ARrocks
At terminal velocity no less

Fear of heights alone is not very rational. Fear of falling is more rational.
danishjuggler21
If you want to be pedantic, then sure.
JokeDestroyer
There's a rational fear of heights, and then there's shaking uncontrollably when climbing a ladder. I have the latter (no pun intended).
ProphetofEntropy

Yeah, we paid about $250 ish each (husband and I). We drove to Baldwin wi. From Minneapolis.

Is it awkward being pressed up against some dude like that? Asking as a person who doesn't like touching strangers.

StephenDaniels
If she asked him to stop and he didn't he's a dick, but its a benign maneuver that most don't react badly to, especially after freefall.
buffywho
Oh! That would have been my worst nightmare.

I appreciate your candor. I'm terrified of heights and I'm convinced I would black out if I tried skydiving.

I wouldn't even be able to make the jump onto the emergency slide to escape a burning airplane. Somebody'd have to throw me.

When I was on the side of the plane looking down I said never mind. My instructor was like, yeah, no and just forced me out.
