This is from 1999. I was 11.

Also from 1999. I decided to draw a cat that was at the animal hospital.

From 2001, when I was 13, I think?

Bahaha Dancing Shadow, what a great name.

2003. Age 15

2007. In college, took couple of art classes finally.

Started to figure out how to draw the human form

I went back and revisited several characters that I had created before

Trying to see how I would design them at the time

Arden again

She keeps on reappearing in my sketches

2010 - Rendering Assignment of Still Life

We had to arrange out own still life, light it a certain way, then render the heck out of it. This took forever.

2010 - Rendering Final

I think I only got a B+ on it. My shadows weren't doing the right thing and it was warping kind of weird. Oh well.

One of the various zoo drawings that I made

Done either 2009 or 2010. Can't remember

2011 (I think) - Life drawing class, my forth one so far

Gesture Drawing class - each pose was only from 10 seconds to 2 minutes to 5 minutes at most. Taught us to draw loosely and convey form within a matter of seconds

2011 Costumed Figure Drawing - 25 minute poses

the first two figures were done from real life - and the models held those poses for quite some time. It was a complete opposite to my gesture drawing class.

Doodling around 2011 for a class

This is when I started figuring out that I really liked inking. This sketch also launched a comic I created for a class assignment

2013 - Teaching myself how to paint in Photoshop

This was my second attempt to paint in Photoshop, and I pretty much just took a picture of onions off the internet and attempted to recreate it

2013 - Painting my feelings from Halo 4

This was also a nice exercise in painting - took a screencap of this scene and painted Master Chief. Took me a couple of days - and I never really did finish the painting (Sorry Cortana)

2013 - Inking Cool Dudes

2013 - Drawn and colored while camping with the family

2013 - Same camping trip, trying to figure out watercolors

January 25th, 2013 - A gift to my mom

I did these paintings right before I took over as director of Wellcast

January 25th, 2013 - Another gift to my mom

I decided to go all out and paint something from my own mind with all the creative flourish I could muster at the time. I was going to be super freaking busy in the following months, so I figured to go all out.

2013 - Sketching between rendering videos for Wellcast

Copying from JC Leyendecker and trying to study how he did hands

2013 - Remembering my animation and character design principles

Didn't want to lose them

2014 - Trying to figure out how to do imaginary lightsources

Using my own face

2014 - a gift for a friend from Final Fantasy 14: A realm reborn

It was a birthday gift made a month early. Also an exercise in using color.

2014 - doing whimsical drawings in ink

2014 - Sketch I did for fun

2015 - Created my own art magazine

Inktober 2015

This one in particular got a lot of likes

June 2015 Birthday gift for my fiance

August 2015

Something I wanted to do for myself

January 2016 - Arden comes back

World building and sketching out character ideas :D

Love seeing your progress OP! Fellow artist here, I'm about 6 year in myself. Seeing this really makes me want to get back into inks.

So my wife loves crows (and trains birds[mainly raptors]) .. How can I get a crow from you?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You're the type of person I really wanted to be. But I'm probably just holding myself back and it's no one's fault but my own.

Don't get me wrong, this is great. But it's like every artist has an anime fantasy phase and then BAM! the most realistic fruit bowl.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Once you hit the fruitbowl, you know you are on the right path hahaha

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wish I could upvote this way more than once. Thanks for sharing!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

thanks for viewing! Sorry there's a ton of images ^_^; I posted them all the way to 2016

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No way, do not be sorry. I enjoyed them all. It's awesome to see someone's work over the years.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Holy shit, these are amazing. Artist progressions are my favorite, they give me hope for my own art.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

These are fantastic.

How much does your 2014 whimsical drawing in ink cost? I love it. I love how you also progressed throughout the years!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Um, not quite sure. I still love that piece...but let me think about it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I heard stories about how facility at SCAD screening admissions would instantly throw out any portfolios that has any anime in it.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Here's what I do. http://img01.deviantart.net/0d8c/i/2015/199/e/b/farming_is_difficult_by_0jacob_d_brown2-d91t6hj.jpg

lmfao I was expecting stick figures but I can assure you that neither your art nor comedy style need improvments

10 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

I drew a shitty Wraith King recently.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd pay money to have this as a mural in my house.

I don't really know what I expected before clicking that link

Every day we step further from the light.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Keeping it up with the ink and watercolor, you definitely have significant talent with those media (not that the pen/pencil work isn't good)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What's Wellcast?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was an animated youtube show that focused on giving advice to viewers. The channel is still up if you search for it on youtube

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even a copy of it would be great! I don't need the original if you're not ready to part with it quite yet. Thanks for getting back to me!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Haha okay - I'll see if I can figure out a way to make a copy of it. (That's decent enough)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

.....You drew Rey from Star Wars when you were 11.

10 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 3

Wut? That doesn't look anything like Rey. Looks more like a magical girl with a scythe.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

SHES CALLED MAKA, LOOK IT UP

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Bruh, Maka doesn't have a star in her hair... Or otherwise look anything like that. Am I the only one in this thread with eyes? ._.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

IT WAS ALSO FROM 1999 DUDE, SAILOR SATURN COMES CLOSE

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Here, have a book for chopping.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Like the earliest version of Rey on the drawing board. Got that arm wrap and a big ol' stick.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Did you go to CSULB? The rendering assignment and the final project are exactly the projects I had to do in my rendering class.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup! Graduated 2012

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh wow! I'm a 3rd year illustration major there rn. Was this done in Neena Chawla's class?? If so, did you do Charlie's Room?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes I took her class, and yes I did Charlie's Room. How are those perspective assignments treating you :D ?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I finished her class 2 semesters ago, but the perspective assignments were so tedious. She really picks at the smallest details lol.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

man it takes only 16 years to get better at drawing. I can do that.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I loved drawing until I realized everything I drew when not copying something else was complete shit.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

in skill when they begin to take their art more seriously 2/2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you are dogged you can probably get decent in like 2 years. Artists like OP and myself usually display a jump 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It takes faster for some.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's rare to go from 0-100. You pick up drawing or painting because you like doing it, spend awhile being crap, THEN start taking it serious

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was terrible at watercolours. Drew daily and its been almost three months, pretty decent at it right now. (1)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

http://imgur.com/Ezk0zKE this is the most recent one, and the first time I tried to do a portrait. The beard looks like crap though.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This was a week after the goldfish, I practice colour mixing and watched videos. Turned out decent

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This was my first attempt at using them. Tried to paint a goldfish

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Went to OP's instagram to see more works and daaayum her fiance is a great piece of work too! Sorry for being a creep...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hehe yeah I think he's a dreamboat too <3 (I creepy fawn over him all the time, don't worry)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love seeing people's progress in their skills and talents. Great work @OP! I would love to see more in the future :)

10 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Thanks! I'll do my best to post more. You can actually see more of my work on my instagram @thestormlight

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Following you now :)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thanks! I appreciate it :D

Draw porn

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 5

I second this

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I favourited this, it shows a lot more creative diversity than the majority of artists progression posts. You've not just improved one thing

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Thanks! I appreciate it

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

NP :) I come from an artistic family, my mum takes classes, I've seen my uncle, grandpa, cousins, & myself do explorations. You show depth!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No diss intended to other artistic progression posts, but usually they refine one medium, one look, one type of thing. Which is fine too.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Haha yeah I understand. I have a lot of interests and switch between various sources to study from a lot

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It shows. It really does. You're showing depth, breadth, discipline, curiosity, and creativity as an artist. You'll go far :)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Holy. I feel like it was a big jump into suddenly drawing like an "adult"

10 years ago | Likes 141 Dislikes 0

Seems more like a style jump than quality to me.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

2007 was a year filled with life drawing, hence the jump :D

10 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 0

so basically: disregard manga waifus, acquire loomis

10 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

YES. Acquire all the Loomis, take any life drawing classes you can manage. They make a huge difference. Well, obvs. But they helped me too.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I hated my life drawing class. I suck at proportions, I would hide my drawings when the male model would take a break and check out our work

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes I did find it quite awkward when the models would walk around naked looking at drawings of themselves naked.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I would freak and cover my page going 'I'm terrible at proportions, don't look!' Or I'd avoid drawing that and hands and feet, too.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That actually sounds hilarious. It's funny when you are more embarrassed than the one naked person in the room.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They enjoyed making us feel awkward haha

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They enjoyed making us feel awkward haha

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do you do requests on commission?? I really want to have one of your pieces.

10 years ago | Likes 215 Dislikes 0

I'd definitely want a painting (watercolor?) of a crow. Beautiful!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes me too!!! I would love to have a drawing of my dogs in the style of the one you posted! Maybe an 8x10? How much would you charge?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@Nonjudgemental I don't usually, but we can talk some more if you're interested

10 years ago | Likes 115 Dislikes 0

If you do decide to commission your work please let me know!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Me too please! I love your work. Would you at all be interested in tattoo design?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Me too, me too! :D

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You're amazingly talented!! Thank you for sharing your art.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would actually pay quite a bit for some commissions in the style of that inked wolf/gifts to your mother. 100-200 and tip for set of 3.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Message me :)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Op, do you do art professionally? Your art is amazing- i feel inspired. I have many sketch books but I've never thought of taking a class

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm currently a graphic designer, was a director, game artist, freelancer, etc. It's one of those things that I constantly do.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I could use some work done, actually. Making a board game and I need art done for it, if that's something you'd be interested in. :P

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Bro I'm not op and I can't draw but making a board game sounds really cool! I'm impressed and wish you the best of luck

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Well, depending on how today goes (kinda meh so far), I may be asking Imgur for help testing it out. We'll see though.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yes please! I'd love to have your artwork it's gorgeous and there aren't many drawings of my favorite book out there :)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Out of curiosity, what is your favorite book

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
