https://kotaku.com/discord-palantir-peter-thiel-persona-age-verification-2000668951

Because of the controversies around Palantir, Discord is switching to Persona for their "Age verification experiment."

As pointed out by @DJevelen, Persona is also linked to Peter Thiel, who is their primary investor.

Discord already had a data breach, and lost over 70,000 user's personal data back in 2025.

Discord has already lied to us three time minimum.
#1 They said they will keep our data, which is being handed over to 3rd party.

#2 They said they would delete the data once age has been verified, the former companies are both known to never deleting data.
Now they are claiming it will only be held for "Seven Days."

#3 They said they don't monitor private servers and chats, yet now they say they are using AI to read your private servers and chats to determine your age.

This is about data, control, and money above all else.
Removing another layer of anonymity from the internet. Infringing on our rights, the freedom of speech, and the ability speak out against the actions of our and other governments.

Yeah Persona has some of the same problems, too.

Because of the controversies around Palantir, Discord is switching to a slightly different shade of Palantir.

everything client side made no sense from the start. they were def wanting to gather face data from the start

1 month ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

So lets pretend we're a child molester for a second. Targeting ignorant and less than tech savvy individuals how easy do you think it would be to spoof an age verification check to be able to aquire detailed information about a potential victim? Our governments are so fucking stupid.

Do you want to tank your company? Because this is how you tank your company.

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Like that's going to mean anything. They'll either do it again after a short "forgetting period" or just change their minds and belatedly do it. Either way they are going to do what they want to do whether anyone likes it or not.

Fuck off Discord.

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I deleted the app ages ago but I don't know if that deleted my account, how do I check? Is there a way to do so (website?) without having to download the app?

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Discord.com still allows you to log in...
You have to personally delete your account.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah you can access them through the website without the app

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Damage is done, seeya.

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Wow... Oh well, I already deleted my server and account. Then when I tried explaining why I got tricked into creating a support account, and when I tried deleting that too, through their own official process, "for legal reasons, we are unable to delete your support account or support tickets at this time." They have an official process for deleting support accounts and then say they can't delete support accounts. /facepalm

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I only use shitcord for interacting with support peoples or asking for support for a game so I can live without it 100%.

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Sometimes the smaller ones you can ask the devs about bugs and they fix stuff.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Oh yeah some of the smaller devs steam community forums are really great places to be with actual moderation and developers responding to posts.

While I thank you for the post from their faq, they also said they delete the data once verified, will be the only company handling it, and etc.
So I trust them as far as I can throw them.
As for my source not much better, but from various videos discussion the subject.

The only thing Discord is sorry about is that they got outed.

1 month ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

This. They'll get right back at it when the heat dies off.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

None of this protects kids at all. Predators are not finding kids in adult only spaces on Discord. Fucking regulators have either lost the plot or have alterior motives in collecting user data (or both). At this point any policy that espouses to protect children is lying about its intentions. It isn't nor should it ever be the job of servixe providers or policy makers to educate, monitor, and manage people's children online. If parents (or guardians) amd educators were given proper training >

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

> and resources, which includes better wages, this would cease to be an issue overnight. Child molesters exploit ignorance and not being tech savvy to gain access to their victims and no amount of filtering or verification is going to prevent that. In fact it could make it easier as a tech savvy predator could spoof age verification systems to get detailed identity information for a minor.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Its not about kids, its about controlling the subversive elements.

I miss pornhub. Not for the obvious of course but because they cared enough to completely cut off the state of florida instead of trying this. Godspeed You magnificent freaks.

1 month ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

They've blocked more than 30% of the US because of similar draconian laws. Still works in Ohio because those idiots left interactivity loophole clauses in it (essentially defanging the law for sites including comment sections - which Pornhub has done for more than a decade, perhaps always). Super funny to hear Ohio GOP reps fume that "only 1 of the top 5 adult sites is following the intent of the law," whereas they are all following the letter of the chickenshit law.

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The thing that gets me is people thinking these laws actually protect children. Predators aren't finding victims on adult only websites and if parents are doing at least a decent job of raising their kids they aren't being exposed to these sites either. It's all a fucking red herring disguising a mass data gathering attempt in the grand fascist and making piles of money agendas.

1 month ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

If they cared about children we would have 3 million more epstein files, and criminal convictions of dozens of powerful men, not age verification on Discord leaking personal data to dozens of powerful men.

That's what they are hoping for actually. They want it to tank and then buy it up cheap. I'm probably going to buy a few at open and then dump them when they double in 4-6month.

All that aside I might be trying tout Team speak 6 or other items for me and my homies.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They say they will only be keeping data for 7 days, don't give in to this. Once you send them anything it is out there and you have no idea where that data is going or what they are doing with it. Only safe thing to do now is move on from discord..

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It won't. This is the sort of thing Big Money loves. Look at Facebook's IPO. Look at how the stock performed during the Cambridge Analytica and Beacon scandals. Look at how much money is being dumped into AI despite it violating IP rights in wholesale quantities.

1 month ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

I don’t use discord, but if I did, that shit would be history. Dump that shit. And if imgur ever pulls some shit like this, they can fuck right off too, then I’ll have absolutely zero social media accnts.

1 month ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 1

Imgur is selling your every login and data to Meta and several other threats. Confirmed and posted about it several times in the past with plenty of evidence.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What voice service do you use?

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately for everyone I know, it’s our primary and sometimes exclusive form of communication with each other. Deleting my discord would mean losing contact with some friends I care for deeply.

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Then convince them to go somewhere else with you...? It's not like there aren't alternatives. Even oldschool IRC works just fine if you mostly just chat with people.

1 month ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Imgur already removed all NSFW they used to host, unilaterally. They do that because they bend over to payment processors, just like Discord and most other companies on the planet. They're not any better.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Imgur took a stand and blocked the UK over crap like this. I respect Imgur's mods and execs for that (gotta tell them when they do something RIGHT for a change)

1 month ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 3

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I don't think they took a stand so much as they decided they'd lose less money that way

For those interested, fluxer.app is a beta platform very much with the same visual as Discord. With these news from Discord, Fluxer is having a major influx if signups but it's seriously promising.

1 month ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Slack is an established alternative too, it's mostly used for business and education

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I used to have Slack before Discord and abandoned it due to lack of features and customization.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

See the problem here is the fragmentation. Are there plans for any sort of interconnect between alternatives? I doubt it. So it doesn't make any sense to leave now until the definitive replacement is established (if there ends up being one). Reminder: these services need to be financially viable. The Amazon method of undercutting long enough to starve out competition won't fly here. So alternatives will be subscription based or advertiser run.

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Thank you. I have several Discord channels and am looking for alternatives.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This one is basically a mirror of Discord's layout. It only has one developer at the moment so, gotta give the guy props for what he's doing.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He said on bluesky that because he sold so many of the Visionary packages (the $300 lifetime thing), he's now looking into scaling up his infrastructure and even possibly hiring people. So it looks very promising so far. Its features are also far beyond what Stoat currently has.

Thiel is a primary investor in these things because he wants technocratic fascism, which he conflates with freedom, since he thinks that'll stop the antichrist. The only reason he's not hospitalised for something akin to paranoid psychosis is that he's rich.

Any christian that think they can stop (or speed the coming of) the antichrist (a figure foretold by their god) shows how mentally unstable they are. Now I don't believe in their god but anyone who does believe and thinks they can force his hand should have their money and power stripped away and locked in an old timey asylum.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The hard thing about switching is knowing what to switch to. Similar problem as with twitter. Plus what people tend to choose is so random, you can't go by which one is mechanically the best. Sure you can move to XYZ platform, you can try to get your friends over, but if it's not the one most people are on you now have a problem.

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Ehh, with twitter I didn’t switch at all, I deleted my account and moved on with my life. Discord will probably be the same.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Then don't switch until the definitive alternative is established.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Do people actually use Discord just for the sake of Discord, though? I thought it was usually a matter of wanting to connect with specific people about a specific topic and whatever it is choosing Discord for their main community hub. If these, like, indie game studios and content creators and whatever else start going "yeah, our Official Community is now here instead of Discord" then I'd expect people to pack up and leave.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You're still gonna lose a percentage of people because they're unwilling or unwitting to use the other service

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Personally 99% of my disord use is to talk to friends I know irl. 1% it's other communities, occasionally. But I'm not sure how typical I am. :)
Problem happens if community X says "we're going to matrix" and community Y says "we're going to fluxer". Now people need 2 accounts. Even worse if you and friends all decided to move to some 3rd option. :D

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Thats just how it is these days though. To communicate with my band members we've switched through 3 different messaging apps and I have to do 3 different social media apps to hear about different events in my local music scene. If anything, I think there should be even more competitors sowe can punish these shitty big players when they get too evil, and migrate to a competitor

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Then just... have two accounts? This isn't Twitter where there's some common environment that everyone shares, these are generally self-contained communities. I'm not seeing the problem here. Especially since if these are all open-source platforms with the same general functionality someone will inevitably make a third-party client that sacrifies a few features in order to connect with multiple services.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You're missing a few key factors. Any alternative needs to be financially viable. People seem to forget that online services cost money to run. None of our shit is "free". We just collectively decided that we don't want to directly pay for it ourselves. So thats why news is all controversy and overdramaticised, it's why every second click online serves us up an ad, and it's why social media is a cess pool of misinformation and AI slop. Do you want to pay for 2 accounts? Do you want ads?

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

A text chat service is incredibly inexpensive to operate. Back in the pre-enshittification days, when everyone used IRC, it was free because any rando with a stable job could run a server as a hobby if they felt like it. If you look at something like Discord, the costs of running the service itself are approximately 0% of the company's budget. If you eliminate all the useless corporate bloat it's not hard to make something like that financially viable.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Listen people.. You all need to embrace FOSS software and leave this capitalistic hellscape yesterday. Infinite growth isn't a viable business model and its getting increasingly worse every single day

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

You have already failed, unfortunately, the first step in encouraging people to a better service/option: Making it understandable.

1 month ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 4

Me: "Heeeeey, you're not really explaining good."
Them: "There's lots of understandable FOSS options."
Me: "Okay but like, you still haven't explained. nichfra did."
Them: "Just move on then, this thread isn't for you, the fuck is wrong with you."
Me: "... Are you fucking useless? Yes. Don't tell people to do a thing by obfuscating it all the way, then blame them for not knowing what the fuck you're saying."

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

There are lots of understandable and literally 1click install FOSS options by now, but you would need a desire to leave big tech, which I guess is the biggest hurdle for ppl. At this point using windows 11 is literally harder to use than many Linux distros for example, atleast for basic usage

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

Yeah I think at some point recently Linux took over Windows as my "thing I'd recommend to my mom" OS, both because Linux has improved and because Windows has gotten worse. Random AI buttons, full screen popups that prevent you from using your computer until you agree to give them your files or whatever the fuck with no clear way to get out, and various other deliberately confusing enshittifications. There's more family tech support in navigating this than working with Linux, for casual use.

1 month ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yeah same, I finally managed to convert my mom to ZorinOS which so far has been going great. Almost 1/2 year into it by now and no issues, and she almost doesn't even know what a browser is lol

Foss is free and open source software for anyone wondering btw.

1 month ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Thank you, homie.

Christ, that dude is never gonna convert people..

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Well, yeah, but the words "open source" and "software" already only makes sense to anyone remotely familiar with software in the first place, so the only additional explanatory/enriching word in that phrasing is "free", which would then have the exact same marketing as bigtech, thus FOSS will sufficiently target its desired audience no?

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 8

It will not because FOSS doesn't say open source or software. It says OSS

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

So your response is "I suck at communicating and that is other people's problem".

Useless.

EVERY discord server i'm in is discussing alternatives and where to migrate to if this shit goes through, it might be inevitable, but if they go through with it it will decimate them

Root and Stoat are both being looked at widely, but Root has some similar potential concerns for the future and Stoat, while open-source and privately hostable, is still behind in development (including limited voice capability).

Element is a little more complex but also a possible option.

What's old is new!

Channels on another server run the same risks of the provider doing dirty things. Luckily it doesn't take much to run an IRC server. An RPi and a free name service (e.g. NO-IP or similar) will be more than capable for a small group.

1 month ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Put your no-IP name service shit behind a VPN anyway, though. Just to be safe.
