Julian's videos on YouTube are as much a work of art as the paintings he works on.

Julian is so calming. You’re never anxious watching him; the art’s in good hands. And he explains everything he does.

I love this guys channel. He’s a fucking wizard with some of the shit he’s done

5 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I just thought it was darker back then!

https://www.youtube.com/c/BaumgartnerRestoration His vids are so fucking Zen, I love them!

I miss Outkast

I thought old fashioned people just liked off white clothes.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh, i don't recognize this one, is it a new video?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Literally watching one of his videos right now! Love his stuff!

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I didn't notice the bird until after....

Funny how this can get to the front page. According to a lot of Imgur users, art history degrees are useless.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Awesome! Though she looked pretty good with a tan.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Removing the old varnish and accumulated crud. An exacting skill.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In less skilled hands

Was Looking for this...

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Baumgartner has a whole youtube channel of this stuff , hes pretty amazing and goes above and beyond to restore paintings

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I always thought it was weird high society people looking tan in periods where pale was seen as high class. Now I realize it’s all just dirt

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What's this painting called?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Or is it too obscure

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I call my copy George.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep, it's a Tide ad.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

He did a good job not erasing the face....like many others have done. Must not be an amateur....like them lol. Use professionals people.

Rule #1 Never start with the face...

5 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I too remember what happened to Whistler's Mother.

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

What was that? Apply a concoction of solvents directly to the face and use an abrasive sponge for cleaning?

5 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Steel wool and paint thinner right on the middle. Gets all that stuff right off.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

They say common sense isn't common...

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Now I want to buy paintings from thrift shops and practice this as a hobby.

5 years ago | Likes 398 Dislikes 0

There's a bit of it on YouTube. Feels good man.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do it. Ive seen so many restoration horror stories that I feel more practiced hands can only do good

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Thats actually what we do to practice. That and break pots and glasses to put back together.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Restore them and if they're not terribly famous, add interesting things to it. Every painting needs a dinosaur or an alien

5 years ago | Likes 97 Dislikes 0

Unless they already have a dinosaur or alien, then they need something mundane, like a normal dude or a dog just chillin

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Check them out they do that with tons of paintings https://instagram.com/davepollotart?igshid=fjf7p9ipvrah

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Lay down an isolation layer before you draw the dinos, that way you can change your mind and add spaceships later on.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Or Vikings landing on idyllic shores.

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I like adding a nice beach to all my paintings of vikings.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ooh, my daughter and I have been doing this for a couple of years now. My favorite is one I call "Dad Bod Goat Man in Jorts."

ᏩᏙ! Glad you enjoyed it!

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That sounds awsome make an imgur gallery for em

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I’m so interested. What do you use to “clean” the painting, and restore some of the colors like in the video?! I want to try!!

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I would very much like to see this.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nevermind, I see that it is already linked

5 years ago | Likes 405 Dislikes 1

I will never tire of this

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Where'd it go?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ruining this pai ting actually did alot of good for the local economy. Tourism was boosted in a major way because of her fuck up.

5 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

I think there are like 3 botched "restorations" including this one...always reminds me of the mr bean movie

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I read somewhere that this actually happens more often than it has to, since unskilled people are getting the job. it's sad

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I actually LOL. Thanks for that!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The one I was hoping to find. Thank you

5 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

/a/ZFp1oQv this happened this year. "Restored" twice

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

this makes me genuinely wince

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Where was this one?

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Spain

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Thanks. Not the same lady as the other one i hope...

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Julian’s videos are great! Really cool to see how thats done.

5 years ago | Likes 84 Dislikes 0

My friends wonder why I know so much about fine art restoration...

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Did you watch his restoration of the Dutch master on wood that split into like 4 pieces? That shit was amazing.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Quite!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Link me! Please!

Oh Julian ?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Please tell me they faced it with washi kozo first... some people know nothing about fine art restoration. *eye roll*

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Canvas looks stable.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I use a technic called tack spitting — Well honestly, I follow him on YouTube. Good voice, good explanations, good commercial conservator.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Whats a commercial conservator? Is there something other than commercial conservation?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Museums conservator.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Private practice" vs "institutional"/"academic"

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you want some real fun, check out the controversy surrounding his channel from the restoration community. Not supporting either side.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

If you could summarise the issue in one comment, it would be appreciated. I like his vids btw.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fair enough! Some disagree with his methods - apparently he tried to threaten legal action on people who disagree or bring up questions.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Apart from some random comments is there any proof of this controversy? He always mentions what he does is reversible

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Varnish/soil cleaning is never reversible. You must do it with careful planning.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I only looked into it a little bit, tbh, but I guess he's threatened legal action on people for disagreeing with him - more so the (1)

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Controversy in general of people disagreeing that paintings of certain ages should even BE cleaned off like that, and the popularity of (2)

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

His videos giving people the wrong idea of what restoration does. My opinion? Should be mostly up the private owner.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes, even if his work is really interesting, he is often a bit too invasive. (Restorer here.) And also, some of his work is not reversible.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you for your input!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But it depends on what the owner wants because he works for the private sector right? What parts would you say are too invasive?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But you are right, sometimes it depends of the owner’s desire. But the restorer should always suggest the less invasive action.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I remember a triptyque restoration with the Virgin Mary where he put so much resin in the lacks and crack of the wood. 1/

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And that type of infiltration can not be undone. Also the retouch denatured a bit the delicacy of the work for my taste.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah but that piece was severely damaged and completely falling apart. And you didn't see it in person
