New York's recent executive budget would have $419 million cut from school aid in New York, which would affect nearly 700 school districts and significantly harm rural schools.

https://www.wktv.com/news/419-million-is-proposed-in-school-aid-cuts-in-new-york/article_49d7b7b8-bb2c-11ee-b8ee-23c7bc267dbd.html

The small 1 building schools near me are losing 800K to 1.2M in aide to keep all programs open. They are having a problem funding and feeding the kids. Yet New York State is forcing them have all electric busses by 2037. Bye to some sports and after school programs.

I recommend cutting $419 million from the police and taxing the fucking stadium

If your economic system encourages subsistence workers performing minimalistic chores for subsistence wages, then I guess promotion of that system would discourage individuals from being educated above the minimum level required for those chores. Why would you want an educated population with the ability to think for themselves? Hurray for total and complete unrestrained capitalism, communism, socialism, whatever-ism. Some idiots even say they "love the uneducated". Fuck Sweet Potato Hitler.

They should get rid of competitive sports in school its a waste of money just like the state wasting their education funds for sports stadiums!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Didn’t they just blow a huge chunk of money on a sportsball stadium?

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Continually cutting education is making people stupid by design

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I read the article, it doesn't really seem to support the point being made. I feel like I need an entirely different article.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

So much for lotto/sin taxes funding schools. Plenty of “sin” and comparatively little $ flowing to schools.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yer, the world over, politicians do NOT care about children + their education.

If anything in NYC needs to be cut, it's the insanely bloated police budget, not the money that goes into educational programs. Why the hell is shit like that not ever in these budget proposals? And the cuts need to be in the multiple billions of dollars, as NYC cops get something like $11 billion a year or some such other ridiculous amount. Hell, it's probably even more than that now.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

This was my actual reaction when I read the headline

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

It was a $1.2 billion proposed increase and instead it's only going to be almost $800 million -- but some schools increased their own budgets as if the $1.2 billion was guaranteed and now they have to choose between leaving executive pay and sports budget programs where they were last year OR taking all of their extra money and funneling it into those 2 while ignoring silly things like education at schools.

The schools in NY don't feed low income kids, the government does. The fed also lowered CEP to 25% from 40%, this means if 25% of the population is below the threshold, bam, free lunches by uncle sam. I live with an administrator for a NY school. https://www.wxxinews.org/local-news/2023-05-06/ny-state-budget-funds-free-school-breakfast-and-lunch

keep the masses just happy enough to do your bidding while slowly stripping away their rights, and before they realize it you have made a new form of slavery.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 5

It's important to remember at the moment this is merely a proposal. Legislators are working with local schools and schools all over New York to potentially find a better solution.

"We have to be patient," Bellair said. "We have to look and see what the actual number is going to be when the state actually adopts the budget."

As a Canadian, I've been told CONSTANTLY since (at least) 2016 that this shit ONLY happens because of Republicans, yet here we are. Almost like it's class warfare greed all around! But hey that's some dangerous 'both sides' talk!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a disingenuous article written from a part of the state that is losing population and complaining about Hochul's proposed change in the formula that allocates student aid.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

NY politics still as corrupt as my youth there in the 80s-90s?

Defund the police

and Defund those damn Firemen! We could do a better job with our garden hoses!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yeah those damn firemen who consistently abuse their power and get sued regularly which adds up to astronomical amounts of money put into settlements at the taxpayers expense- oh wait that’s cops not firemen?

Dont blame the electric busses for school cuts. They are cheaper to operate. Here in Oslo we have all electric busses, and the companies operating them reports that over a ten year period they are cheaper than diesel overal (more expensive to but, but cheaper to operate and maintain)

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My point was there are cutting aide across the board. Yet forcing schools to go electric busses. How are they supposed to pay for the busses ?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Complaining about electric busses is idiotic. "Oh, the schools are going to save a ton of money!!! The horrors!!!!"

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

thats not the point. the point is where are those funds going to come from?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

This from a politically Democrat-dominated state incidentally. Get better political options, America.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Looks like an $800m increase for schools over last year from what I see in the governors announcement. Where are these other numbers coming from?

2 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 3

It's kinda a crappy article. The 800 million increase is 400 million less than was originally proposed. So they 'lost' some of the increase. They are also updating old formulation for funding appropriations

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It looks like it's adding up all schools that get less aid under her new formula as 419m in total reductions. i.e., $419m being moved from schools that are losing students to schools who are gaining students.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We kinda had something similar in Jersey where the formula they were using to calculate state funding for schools was massively outdated and more gentrified areas like mine were getting more funding than they should

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Again, this is why sportsball is fucking idiotic. Those teams are worth millions if not billions. Pay for your own fucking stadium. They have no loyalty. Call their bluff and watch them bail like the fucking Raiders have. Oakland, Los Angeles, Oakland....now Vegas ?!??

No billionaire-owned club should have the fans or city pay for a new stadium at the cost of education or anything else. Get a fucking loan like everyone else.

2 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 4

They don't need a loan, but they can't bare with the thought of spending a few percent of their own money either.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have an idea for these billionaires, they should support their stadium with the proceed from their only fans account, cut back on avocado toast?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

*Billions or almost Billions. I'd guess all of them are worth at least a billion+ but haven't checked, so...

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

PArt of the reason I dont fucking watch sports...period...I have no interest in it, I have no desire to have any interest in it, but for whatever reason, people go full unga-bunga tribal brain over "their" team.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's straight up extortion by the franchises, threatening relocation to wherever they can get the most lucrative deal.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I totally agree! Just love the fact that you said sportsball even more. Love it😂

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

They should have the fans pay for the new stadium. It's called "selling tickets".

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Just a thought: pay the players slightly less and then the 'team' would have the money for their own stadium.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

It's not a great thought. We'd be better off having the people own the teams instead of billionaires.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Or the owners who get half of the money without having to do much of anything while the players are taking a serious health risk every time they step on the field.

In NYC, mayor Adams blames the budget cuts to cover the increase cost of undocumented migrants

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I bid on the all the HVAC piping for this stadium. Fun fact, Kathy Hochul's husband is Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Delaware North, who operates the concessions at the Buffalo Bills’ Highmark Stadium.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Continued militarization of police is sure to have some role.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

How utterly fuckin' typical. Using public funds to pay for the creation and construction of a private venue, while letting the business keep all the profit generated by the damn thing despite not spending a single red cent on building it, then the government cuts funding to programs that people actually use to 'save on costs.' It's such bullshit.

2 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

The teams should have like a fund raiser. Maybe a carwash. Or the players can sell chocolate. I don't understand how people are ok with this. There are better ways to spend tax money than makeshift gladiatorial stadiums.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

A stadium literally no one wants for a team that is historically shitty as fuck. All because they *almost* got to the Super Bowl 2x since 1993. Sure they’ve been to the playoffs every year since 2019 but they’re still not worth a new stadium. The Chiefs have been 4x the last 5y and have won 2 of the 4x with a hopeful 3rd win this Sunday. Every proposal for a new stadium has been DOA by fans because we don’t want a new stadium. It’s in the perfect location as it is. The Royals who are just the

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

Whether they deserve it or not isn’t the issue. Why should taxpayers pay for it? I mean it might make sense for taxpayers to pay for some access roads or other infrastructure connected to it but the actual stadium?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Jags/Jets of the NBL are fighting tooth and nail for a new stadium actually in the middle of our west bottoms which would mean almost zero parking except corp owned so it’s sickeningly expensive. Also tearing down tons of historical buildings & making traffic fucking stupid. The city on both sides of the state line keep nuking it because we refuse to pay for the shittiest team in the league to have a new stadium they don’t deserve. And we have a perfectly fine football stadium.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So the Buffalo Bills get an unnecessary new stadium and kids don’t get lunch?

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Kids won't get *books* in some places. This is nuts!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The football team getting money is BS but the headline is kind of inflammatory: there was a proposal to increase budgets by $1.2 billion so schools set their budgets based on that number. An $800 million increase was actually approved so the schools that planned their budgets based on money that wasn't even passed yet are scrambling to figure out new budgets. Those new budgets leave intact (mostly) increases to school sports program budgets and cut it from "unnecessary" things like education

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh ok that’s super inflammatory. Thank you for clarifying. Articles like this hurt the real goal of educated and feeding kids.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a native New Yorker, I’d like to say; fuck ALL THE WAY OFF Kathy Hochul! A dumb proposal, presented during a presidential election cycle, when the Democratic (presumptive) nominee and incumbent is polling poorly. Bravo, Kathy. Outstanding move.

2 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 1

She's the freaking worst. Pass any old "sounds good to Grandma" garbage but the minute something progressive might actually benefit the state, whip out that veto pen. The likelihood of her passing anything is inversely proportional to the amount of nuance you need to grasp to understand it. She's just not interested, and she's smug about it.

Coming off of a midterm election cycle where the NY Dems' mismanagement and excessive gerrymandering cost the Democrats the House, btw.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

This is how democracy normally works if it wasn't the only other choice was the next corrupt gang

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yup! My only consolation after that election is that Sean Patrick Maloney fucking lost. That asshat, Chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee at the time and representing the 18 district, decided to run in the 17th district against progressive Democrat Mondaire Jones. He pushed Mondaire, the incumbent, out of his district all so he could run for reelection in a slightly “safer” and “bluer” district. The still Republican beat his ass. As punishment, Biden made him an ambassador.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Had to look this up so figured I’d share what I found on Biden making him ambassador:

“On May 12, 2023, President Joe Biden nominated Maloney to become U.S. ambassador to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.”

Someone said that its an increase of 800k per school over last year

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Overall increase of 800m, but she wants to change the formula so that schools whose populations keep reducing don't keep sucking up an unfair share of aid.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That sounds like a good thing being pitched that way, am I misunderstanding something?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well, schools which had been getting an unfair share of aid are upset that the formula means they are getting less aid than they would have under the old formula. So they spread disingenuous stories like this one.
