Consumer Reports and J.D. Power have both reported a sharp uptick in complaints about faulty transmissions, as automakers seeking better fuel economy rolled out dual-clutch gearboxes, continuously variable transmissions and eight- and nine-speed transmissions.

"In the past, transmissions were things you could count on, but that's no longer true," said Jake Fisher, Consumer Reports' director of auto testing. "We are seeing major problems that will leave people stranded on the side of the road."

Sauce: (good article about dual-clutch transmission lack of acceptance by 'Muricans)

...Transmission failures? Unheard of! Just like that Consumer Reports guy said. It never happened so hard I find this news suspicious.

Transmission problems ranked eighth in 2014. As far back as 2009, transmissions were not a Top 10 problem in the Initial Quality Survey.

Double clutching down into 3rd for a corner is, to me, the essence of a sports car. No CVT or dual clutch is ever gonna provide that thrill

I've actually lost interest in owning a Ferrari because they're all DCT. Not that I could afford one anyway, but.

It's not that the transmission fails it's the fact that people don't like the annoying way they shift

They count all repairs and updates as failures . The perception is that the car quits moving altogether that is rarely the case

Per the article, ALL types of transmissions are having higher failure rates these days.

Good to know that I'm not alone in this, granted, my tranny problems come from a bad string of dates on Tinder, but still...

8 speed gearbox in the GF's BMW x3 is the most amazing piece of engineering ever. Through 3 gears before get out of intersection.

If you let off the gas and touch the brake, it downshifts and engine brakes.

Well sometimes they do, you can do it but they're notorious for pulling threads out of the aluminum block

If you blow the head gasket on those you can't just replace it because the head bolts will screw out of the block entirely :/

Wait till you're 55 and see if you don't shift gears as well. (pun)

I live in Canada so not to much traffic in the first place. And at the moment I drive a fiesta with the lightest clutch ever...

But I fully understand living in a big city and a manual would be hell.

LOL my leg used to cramp holding down the clutch at lights in my GTO.

And a GTO thats a sweet car

I taught my self manual mostly, and leave it in neutral at lights. Easier on components to my knowledge

Burning rubber away from lights the instant they turn green is hard to do if you're in neutral.
