I had to say goodbye to my best friend today.

Aug 30, 2018 1:44 AM

Last night, he started limping and having a hard time getting up the stairs. By this afternoon, his back end was paralyzed. The vet said he ruptured some discs in his back, and there was nothing he could do but prescribe anti-inflammatories, but that would just delay the inevitable. So, after a hundred hugs and a handful of Milkbones, he crossed over the rainbow bridge. I know that posts like these are a dime a dozen, but he was my first dog and I’m having a hard time sitting in this suddenly quiet house.

Jackson, 8 years old, the goodest of boys

Sorry for your loss. My two doggos are getting up there in age and I'm not sure how I'd deal with having to make that difficult of a choice.

I'm so sorry. It's an awful decision isn't it? It is our burden to not let them suffer. You did the right thing.

I recently lost my best friend as well. I’m sorry OP.

I'm sorry @OP. Someone said that we come to the world to learn how to love, and our friends don't have to stay too long because they...

I really want a dog but don't think I could handle losing him/her again. When my last dog was about to be put down 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I refused to go to school for that last week to hug him all day. RIP Jake x

My buddy is 12, and every day I make sure to be with him before he’s gone to college. Sorry for your loss OP. I’m sure he had a good life.

7 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 0

Thanks. He had a very good life indeed. We adopted him after he left an abusive home, and proceeded to love and spoil the crap out of him.

7 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Your dog goes to college? or your buddy is a very smart 12 year old and you're the dog?

7 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

Yes

So sorry for your loss, OP ? I work at a specialist referral animal hospital and we frequently do spinal disc procedures on doggos. 1/2

Can be hit and miss but it’s incredible to see how well some of them recover. My love you to for the loss of your friend. 2/2

Less than a year ago I had to hold down my baby for a lethal injection. He was in constant pain but I still feel like I failed him T_T

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

For what it is worth? You didn't. You gave relief, in the only way you could.

I have a 11 year old dachshund who has a bad back. He's my first dog and I worry everyday. Sorry for your loss man

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sorry bro

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The quiet is the worst thing

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It is. He barked a lot, and when he wasn’t barking he’d grunt, groan, and sigh. I miss his weird little sounds.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had to surrender my pet pig and he constantly made noises. It has been rough, but it does get easier.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm sorry for you lose OP. Since this is your first dog I would suggest getting another and loving it just as much. It doesn't get easier1/2

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lost mine about 2 years ago and it still hurts, getting another dog helped big time.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

An open field under a bright, warm sun. So many scents... some familiar; some new. All are glorious curiosities.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I can stretch my legs out and run again! So many new friends. Play. Eat. Run. Rest under a shady tree. Friend is here. They are brighter.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So bright. They pat their lap, and I lay down. So many good scratches..... I can't control my tail. Is okay to rest here. Safe. I wait here.

I’m so sorry. I know it’s nothing compared to this, but I boarded my dog for the first time to go away and I nearly cried leaving him.

7 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 4

Thank you. We only boarded him once in his life, and it was tough. But boy was he happy when we picked him up! :)

7 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

I bet! My boy is getting older and I’m dreading the day he finally goes. Losing a dog is the absolute worst.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

It’s incredibly tough. I’ve lost pets (cats & fish) before, but this was the most difficult. Give your boy lots of hugs and treats for me

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As soon as I pick him up I’m not letting him out of my sight for a few days. He’s going to be tired of me snuggling him.
