So there was something pretty cool in the last episode of Season six that didn't involve explosions or Speedy Gonzales Varys

Last chance to avoid spoilers.

In the library in Oldtown we see these massive, chandelier/gyroscope looking things.

They seem oddly familiar...

Oh right, they look just like the same device from the opening sequence of the show. But what does that mean?

If you're like me you love the pop up storybook style opening of the show.

But now that something within Westeros ties back to that opening it begs the question: who wrote that book? (other than George R.R. Martin).

What it means: in season six Game of Thrones established a narrator.

Someone within the show, sometime in the future, is telling us the story from the library in Oldtown. But who? Well who do we know in the library?

Time for my own theory.

Samwell Tarly is the maester to catalogue the period in history in which all of Game of Thrones takes place. He is the George R.R. Martin of George R.R. Martin's world. Which would mean he is the only character guaranteed to survive through to the end. But why would Sam be the one to carry such a responsibility? After all as of season six he hasn't even begun his maester training, there are certainly many much more qualified scholars who could write the official history. But as any budding historian can tell you, history is always written by the victor. So if Sam Tarly is on the winning side, that means...

Jon Snow wins the Iron Throne.

I know it's a bit of a reach, but bear with me. The big reveal of season six was that Jon Snow is not the son of Ned Stark but of his sister Lyanna and Rhaegar Targaryen. Making his claim to the Iron Throne stronger than Dany's. And last we saw Jon had just been declared King in the North, which means like it or not and regardless of the army of undead that he really cares about, he is in the great game.

A Song of Ice and Fire

The final clue to this theory is the title of the series itself. A Song of Ice and Fire is the story of the rise of King Jon Targaryen I. A king of both Stark and Targaryen blood. In the books Dany has a vision in the House of the Undying of her brother Rhaegar holding a baby (Jon) and proclaiming "his will be a song of ice and fire." So if the entire story has been about Jon the entire time it might be safe to assume he has a pretty good shot of making it all the way to the end. So after all the dust settles and Jon is on the Iron Throne, he will eventually need to appoint someone to write the official history of his reign. And who knows him better than his friend and trained maester Samwell Tarly?

Tl;dr

Just like Frodo ended up writing the book "The Lord of the Rings," Samwell Tarly is the narrator of the Song of Ice and Fire, having been appointed to do so by his friend King Jon Targaryen I. Long may he reign.

How Jon gets there and who else makes it that far we have no way of knowing. But as my fictional alcoholic gambler uncle used to say: "always bet on black."

If in 10 years time or however long it gets dragged out for, you are right then you will get my +1.

The Iron Throne will be abolished.

Dany's vision in the House of the Undying is Rhaegar with Elia Martell holding his son Aegon, not with Lyanna and Jon.

I posted the same thing then saw you beat me to it, should have read the comments anyway, have a +1.

How would Sam ever know the things that Bran and Eddard dreamed? Or the happenings between Snow and Tyrion? Or anything like that?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Because he wrote the story and the whole thing are his conjectures for our amusement?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Could be, but I think Bran is the real story teller. He has the ability to,not only travel in time, but affect the time he is in.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I hope Mr. Martin sees this and makes a point to avoid Jon becoming King.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

And then they all died. The end.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

This is what I think. Everyone dies. The books is about the world, not the people. Everyone dies. Rebirth can occur later.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think Sam is Azor Ahai.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Loved your post. I like to think that he'll be King Jon Snow. Long may he reign.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Of everything that I want to see the most, Howland Reed is at the top of the list. He can give us a play by play of many things

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

WOAH THAT LORD OF THE RINGS SPOILER THO

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

If you called it, I will come back after the show ends and congratulate you.

9 years ago | Likes 98 Dislikes 1

Saw this instantly after that episode came out, so doubtful it is their own theory

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Gonna be a while. Season 7 is supposed to be delayed.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Leaving this here so I can do this as well

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Samezies

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Except the books are written from the perspective of each character... So there's that. Jon and Dany will bang though.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Thank you. Though I'm hoping the latter doesn't happen.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"If you think this has a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention"

9 years ago | Likes 177 Dislikes 1

Agreed.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think you're the only other person here who gets it.

9 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

Martin has said, repeatedly, that the last scene in the book is of a frozen graveyard. That's not happy imagery.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sadly, I know this is the true way it will go.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

agreed. I highly doubt the book will end with "the hero wins." It's more likely to end in terrible war/famine and other such sadness

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

thats great and all but the chapters are written from first person perspective and have talk about character emotions.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Now for another real question. Is hodor a white walker

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Your uncle is Wesley Snipes?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Exactly my thought as well and glad to see someone else remembers Passenger 57 - even I had forgotten about it till seeing that quote!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wasn't the library connection on Reddit right after the EP? Either way it's a good theory

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Plot twist: Khaleesi will become enraged having gotten so close to the Iron throne. She finds out Jon is rightful heir and try to kill him.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Nah she does not. like everything surrounding her story she has people or dragons to do it for her.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Haven't seen this program as of yet.. Is it any good?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

People over hype it, but it is good. For me, and I know this is unpopular, it took me like half way through S3 to get into. 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It starts kinda slow. Also, I guess I'm not as impressed or surprised by some of the things that happen that seem a big deal to others. 2/?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Like, oh no incest?! How could they!? I mean, ok, yeah. Sure that's different, but it's not *mindblown* levels to me. Still, I would 3/4

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

say it's worth giving a shot. As I said, mid season 3 I started to really get into it. I am very critical of shows too BTW. TL:DR it's good.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Bruh, you are on to something.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Honestly I see no reason why Jon and Dany can't or wouldn't marry and claim the throne together. It'd strengthen both of their claims.

9 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 4

I agree - and it doesn't have to be a silly and un-GRRM-like romance story - both of them will be key to defeating the white walkers so 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

it's a perfect military alliance between the two people who will probably hold the most power in westeros

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

iirc, she's infertile, so useless as a queen

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

She was told she's infertile by Mirri Maz Duur. Could be wrong. Could be a cure. Could reverse itself because Targaryen blood, or magic.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

thats been my guess since season 2 started

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

they will. but i think that jon will kill dany (her willingingly) to complete the azor prophecy and have his sword become lightbringer

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Because she is his Aunt? I know the Targaryen's do incest and stuff but I doubt Jon would be up for it

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I thought this but remember what Jon said "how could I sleep with someone when I don't even know who my mother is, we could be related"

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think Jon and Dany are going to end up with a truce where Jon rules the North from Winterfell, and Dany sits on the iron throne.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Sam is going to become a wizard. It is known.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It is known.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why would Jon Snow have a stronger claim to the Iron Throne than Daenerys ? Isnt she his Aunt ?

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Because he's a male of the same bloodline. Males always have a stronger claim than women in got even if they are further removed

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

He's not in the same bloodline though. Because he's illegitimate he is a Blackfyre, not a Targaryen.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

As he does not descend from Daemon Blackfyre, he is not a Blackfyre. What you're thinking of is a bastard. Blackfyres are a specific bastard

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Blood line descended from Aegon the Unworthy and Darmon Blackfyre, not just any Targaryean bastard. Also possible that Rhaegar followed 2/3

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In Aegon the Conquer's footsteps and took a second wife, making Jon (real name Aemon or Visreys) a legitimate child, and with a lack of

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Jon is the son of Rhaegar, who was Daenerys' older brother. Any children of his would be in front of her.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 5

he was still born a bastard outside Raegar's lawful marriage, making his claim weaker.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Jon is Rhaegar's illegitimate son, as Rhaegar was married to Elia Martell of Dorne. Dany is a trueborn Targaryen, making her claim stronger.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

correct, the only way he could take the throne was through the Right of Conquest.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unless of course Rhaegar was following in Aegon the Conquer's footsteps and had a second wife

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

children of the first wife still hold precedent over children of the second

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

True, but this was a discussion of Jon's legitimacy and place in succession in relation to Dany and not (f)Aegon. (F)Aegon in my belief

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're absolutely correct, that's a possibility. I was basing my answer on what concrete information is available, and that it's a 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

sin in the eyes of the Seven, and the last Targaryen to do so was Maegor the Cruel, almost 250 years before the story starts.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Rhraegar held Aegon, not Jon, in the Dany vision. Also the throne doesn't belong to Targaryen anymore. He has no claim regardless.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 6

This is medieval times, claim is basically "I have a huge army". Which Dany might indeed qualify for.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're right about Dany's vision. It was Rhaegar with Elia and his son Aegon. But the Targaryens can take it back—with Fire and Blood.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The throne belonged to the Targ's before the Lannisters and Baratheons usurped it from the Mad King, there are still many Targ supporters

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

I think the biggest counter to Jon becoming King is the fact he won't want it. Even if he finds out his parentage he'll always be a stark

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

On top of the fact that there is probably only one person in the world who could verify his parentage (Howland Reed)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

AND what makes you think anyone would give a shit about some random vastard born and a frog man saying "yo this is the king. You can leave"

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He'll rule the north just as his uncle did and be a loyal supporter for his aunt Dany who definitely wants and will take the throne

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Haven't you noticed how dany is dangerously close to the mad King Aerys in her ruling style? That bitch is gonna be the main villain

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Plus dany and Jon coming together to conquer evil and rule the kingdoms is a fucking Disney ending. Since when has ASOIAF been that bland?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

She's still learning, she's got Tyrion helping to set her straight and I think once she actually gets to Westeros she'll learn some shit

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

My theory: Jon won't be king. He'll die again, but not before knocking up Daenerys with his magically resurrected sperm.

9 years ago | Likes 427 Dislikes 12

Nope

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Daenerys will light three fires: one for life, one for death, and one for love. So far two. The last will be her demise.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He probably will die. Since the theme in season 6 is having dominant women- dorne, Dany, queen of thorns, Sansa, cersei, etc Valar morghulis

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Ew that's his aunt

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Shit, the Targaryen family tree is almost a strait line. At least the Stark in him will add another branch.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That wouldn't even make my top fifty of ew on this show. At this point it's more of an "Eh, why not?"

9 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 0

I mean.. Have you seen his aunt?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wincest

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

His sexy sexy aunt

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

In house Targaryen, incest was the norm

9 years ago | Likes 93 Dislikes 0

Dany wanted to marry her brother in the first book... but yeah, it s gross bc she's his aunt.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Targaeryans are known for their inbreeding. Dany being his aunt is less outrageous than previous couplings

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but they also tended to go a little crazy, so maybe continuing the cycle doesn't seem like the best idea even if they did outbreed Jon

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Actually it makes it less likely, if she was his sister it would be a sure thing.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dany is definitely sacrificing herself in the final battle after she realizes the destruction she has wrecked upon the world can't be undone

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

What damage?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

dany and jon will fall in love. but she will sacrifice himself so he can stab her through the heart so his sword can become lightbringer

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Duuuuude, bravo

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Haha I drop this theory every to try and spread the enlightenment

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mean I could totally see that happening in the books given the backstory, but have they addressed lightbringer enough in the show?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

herself***

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I don't see why Jon's claim is stronger? Because he is older? He's still a bastard child so....

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Cause Rhaegar is next in the line of succession after The Mad King, and there is a possibility(not yet proven) that Rhaegar and Lyanna got

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

married, making Jon a legitimate heir in case of Rhaegar's death, cause children always have a stronger claim than siblings(Dany is his sis)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

But Jon is still a bastard and Dany is a "purebred" targaryeon that is actually a dragon (can't be hurt by fire). Even her brother 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Didn't have those qualifications. As far as we know Jon isn't immune to fire either. I think Jon has a claim to the throne, but to say 2/3

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That his claim is stronger than Danys just seems incorrect. We'll have to see what GRRM decides. But I'll be very upset if he gives Jon 3/4

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ok I missed the part where u said they got married. I guess if that's true then yes he would still have a claim. Can u tell me where it 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is suggested that they were married? 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I haven't read the books so I don't rly know if it's implied anywhere, but it was implied many times that Rhaegar and Lyanna were in love, it

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I will come back and remove my +1 if you happen to be wrong. ;)

9 years ago | Likes 1021 Dislikes 8

Jon is a bastard, Dany is a natural daughter. He's already wrong about Jon's "better claim"

Hey dude, time to take your +1 back haha

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I just want to point out that Rheagar died before Jon was born (Lyanna died giving birth to Jon and the trident happened before she died)

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Double checked in the books. He calls the child Aegon so I assume it is his first kid

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He could have been talking about Aegon, his first son.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Aegon was the infant in Dany's vision.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Aegon doesn't exist in Game of Thrones, they're going to keep him for the books exclusively

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That vision OP is talking about also doesnt exist in the show.
