Harvested liberally from r/SweatyPalms, a favorite & also most hated subreddit.

Not all of them are fear of heights related, I just relate to those

Some of them are fear of dangerous reptiles

Or fast moving hairy spiders

Or drowning

Persistent shark

Waking up from your camping trip surrounded by dozens of crocodiles

Or the unrelenting horror that is the open ocean

#9 contents may have shifted during transit

I both hate and love these. My fear of heights makes the Nr.1 so uncomfortable but its still weirdly fascinating to me.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Okay so I’m not afraid of heights but I’m also not stupid, so I would not be doing the things the people in those videos are

9 is vertically stretched to hell and back. There is no way the cargo would stay that neat if the ship experiences ~45° tilts.

#1 Honest question: If someone dies doing something 𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘭𝘺 dangerous... Should I be sad?

#9 This is bad, but the way the video is stretched makes it look even worse than it is. If you don't believe that its stretched... 40 foot containers are square on the ends. they are 8 feet tall and 8 feet wide, the doors are each 8 foot by 4 foot. Look how narrow and tall these all look.

#1 I feel like this is scary and insane, but at least it's predictable and repeatable. Climbing a giant wall of granite with no idea what hand and foot holds you'll have next is much more difficult and dangerous

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There's video of a daredevil who liked to hang off skyscrapers and fell. It's horrifying but you can't help but think "that's what you get."

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

The ultimate FAFO.

#1 I hope those Samsung windows are more reliable than Samsung appliances.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I've been on a slightly less extreme version of @2 Wasn't too bad, granted I trusted the company who set it up. My girlfriend at the time just absolutely bolted to the end as fast as she could in terror.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

#9 what is it about almost every video of ships at sea that makes people mess with the aspect ratio making it too tall?

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

NOPE

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

#3
Only this one bothered me, and I think it was more because of the camera angle.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Had to go full screen for the full effect!

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Some people like the feeling? Or like hating the feeling?

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How in the shaved Scottish scrotum do all those containers manage to NOT fall off the ship??

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

The video is stretched to exaggerate the situation.

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Someone cinched the straps up and remembered to slap it and say ‘that’s not going anywhere!’

1 year ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

What if they get tired halfway up the building? I got tired walking up my stairs

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Then we get an entirely different kind of video, I suppose?

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#1 taking stupid pointless shit to the absolute next level I don't care if they fall but I do care if they land on somebody

1 year ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

I'd say maybe if they fell it would discourage others from doing similar stunts, but I know people are idiots and they'd see that as a challenge.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Reminds me of the guy who was ledge hanging and slipped on camera.

Thanks, I hate it! +1

#8 Those look like gators.

1 year ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yep, the guy said "quantos jacarés"

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Is there more of this one? Do we know what happened? How were they not eaten

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

The surest sign that they are gators is that I said they were crocodiles. I'm wrong on that one pretty much every time.

1 year ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

round snout = gators. You wont forget.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I don't care if they're alligators or crocodiles, I don't want to wake up surrounded by them.

1 year ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

'Gators have a broad, round snout. Croc's got a skinny, pointy snout. Caiman's just a lil' guy.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I feel like my colon gets squeezed about 5-7cm above my sphincter. Is there a name for that sensation?

#9 I wonder if they gyroscopes are busted? Cuz the ocean looks relatively normal, but man is that thing looking like it's going to keel over.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The camera is busted. The video is stretched.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That’s some extremelt soft containers as well: they bend like like made of rubber. Video is manipulated.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

oh really, dang, looks so real

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

wait, do you think ships are gyrostabilized?

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Whelp, today I learned. Takeaway from that is active gyro-stabilization was attempted but discarded as inefficient compared to active fins, using a much smaller gyro as a sensor. however the article only seems to discuss warships, so it's unclear if these systems are used on bulk freighters.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i know they have mass flywheels for smaller vessels I'm sure there's a means where they gyroscope is used in conjunction with something else for figuring out how to stabilize. Here's a bigger one on a 50m vessel https://vimeo.com/291637819

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

same company goes up to 3000 tons, which is far shy from 200,000 ton cargo ship. I just figure they use gyroscopes in some form or another either sensors or direct stabilization.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/2 like you need some kind of gyroscope to figure out orientation in order for other systems to work. Even in more advance traction control on cars they'll have some form of gyroscope sensor to figure out angular momentum.

If you’re going to climb a building in public. At least wear a parachute to prevent traumatizing pedestrians in the off chance something goes wrong and you fall.

1 year ago | Likes 340 Dislikes 3

Why?

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If they could think of wearing a parachute like that, they probably wouldn't be the type of people to climb a building in public.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They're just trying to get a mobile signal..

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Or maybe just not climb a building while potentially scaring the shit out of people and wasting resources- i.e first responders’ time.

1 year ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 3

Also, pay the windows cleaner and extra for the calc fingerprints mess.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But then they get less internet points?! Are you crazy??!!

1 year ago | Likes 65 Dislikes 0

Do they get arrested at the top?

1 year ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Usually, yea.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Imagine if they saw cops on the roof and started climbing back down

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I dislocated my should mid-free climb once... never again

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm curious how many floors you'd have to be up for it to be effective. I think almost certain death is from 4-5 floors up

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It looks like about 200ft. So about 20 floors. That’s about halfway up the building they were on.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah this is the only one I had an issue with. It becomes dozens of other peoples' problem(s) if you fuck up.

1 year ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

Also if you land on someone you're killing them

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That would be another 8+ kg on their back, skewing the center of mass away from the building.

1 year ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 9

well tough shit for those egoistic losers

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

BASE rigs weigh half that and are pretty low profile and easy to climb with. Once you’re above about 50m might save a mess on the sidewalk.

1 year ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

Thought maybe that was what was hanging out the back of the guy's shirt.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

That looks like a chalk bag

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Maybe. Looked too small to be the kind they throw on a base jump, but I figured I wasn't seeing all of it. If they're up there without one, then they're idiots.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And yet a lot of pro free climbers do it.

1 year ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 3

No. Pro climbers usually do not free solo. And out of the few that do, fewer climb buildings. Out of those who do, even fewer would carry a parachute.

1 year ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 3

I didn’t say they climb buildings. I said they use parachutes. It’s a growing practice. Honnold, Davis, and Hubor have all used them in some recent climbs I’ve watched.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

You said a lot of pro use parachutes. And it is wrong. Some use a parachute for some climbs. This is true.

I can't hold my breath for the duration of the ice swimmer clip, and I'm sat down.

1 year ago | Likes 124 Dislikes 0

Didn't he die?

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That is the scariest one to me.

1 year ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

This is my childhood fear. And my current fear.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It looked sped up if it helps you feel better. Doesn’t assuage the panic though

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

That's worse. The swimmer held their breath for longer then.

1 year ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

He broke through at one point, didn't take a breath, and kept going.

1 year ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

Didn't break through, a chunk of ice just fell off the bottom. Still, I'm betting dude is a pro and was hamming it for the video.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Drowning is my biggest fear so yeah.. that was uncomfortable

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Hey i know you're just trying to be funny, but for real if you can't hold your breath for 27 seconds at a resting heart rate you should see a pulmonologist, that shouldn't be particularly challenging.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It's very kind to offer advice like that to a complete stranger on the internet. You could change a person's life like that. <3

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Hey i reread my comment and I came across as a bit of a dick. Apologies, it wasn't meant to be that way. I really did mean it to be helpful, on the off chance you weren't joking. Barring an extant medical condition if you can't do a 30 second breath hold you really should see a doctor.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not at all, I took it as good advice. I'm glad to see that is indeed how it was intended.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't bother. When I used to dive I was proud with the ability to hold my breath for a solid 10 minutes. It's nothing compared to these free divers. They are like dolphins. A friend of mine could hold it for nearly half an hour and that's with moving. They are built different.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I call BS

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You can call BS all you want, but any pro or semi pro diver worth his salt can do that. If you breathe in high oxygenated air, you can do it longer without effort. I don't recommend it if you're not going deep. Free diving releases the need for decompression, so shallow diving with scuba is better. That said, I'll never go 150m deep on a free dive. That takes a different type of monster.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're right he's full of shit. World record for static apnea (literally laying down and not moving under water) is just shy of 12 minutes, anything over 9 minutes is world class. When I was freediving (well...spearfishing) competitively I was very proud of my 4 minute breath hold.
