Epic fantasy set in a world the "lighteyes" rule and the "darkeyes" follow or are enslaved. Thousands of years ago, great Heralds bore shard weapons and plate armor they summoned from the mist to fight the evil void walkers... One day they all left without explanation, throwing down their weapons and abandoning their posts. Now their legacy is tied to the fate of a large collection of main POV characters. It's part of Sanderson's Cosmere universe, so it has several ties to his other novels and series.

Nearly 300 years in the future, mankind has colonized the solar system and that's about it. 30 billion on Earth under the United Nations, nine billion on Mars under the Mars Congressional Republic, and 50 to 100 million living in the colonies, outposts, farms, water mines, etc. of the Belt. Tensions are high, as Earth and Mars (the Inners) exploit the resources of the Belt (Belters) while giving nothing but cracked skulls and bad drugs in return. Thanks to automation and the vast resources in the solar system, Earth is overpopulated by people who couldn't work even if they wanted to, so a large portion of Earthers are on Basic. Mars' technology, especially their military and navy, are the most advanced in the solar system. And now something has been found that will light the fires of war between all the factions. It also has a critically-acclaimed television show on SyFy/Amazon.

Another military science fiction series set in the far future. After Earth was destroyed a thousand years ago, Humans allied with two alien species to get revenge and eventually wiped out their aggressors down to the last child. Now that alliance has overturned the millennia-old bureaucratic empire that allowed Earth's destruction in the first place. One of the most powerful ships in that war becomes entangled in political subterfuge, blackmail, and assassinations, and the crew find themselves working with the aliens they just defeated to uncover 25,000-year-old secrets.

A military science fiction series set in present/near-future Earth. One day an alien species attacks Earth without warning, only to be fought off by a second alien species they've been warring with for centuries. Turns out there's an immense galaxy-wide war between two super-advanced alien races, but instead of fighting directly, they use various less advanced client species to fight an unending war.

These books are wonderfully different from pretty much anything else I've ever read. The world experiences apocalyptic, earth-shattering quakes and volcanic activity frequently enough that it has become a "fifth season." There are those who are born with the ability to touch and move tectonics, mitigating (or causing) quakes and volcanoes. These people are found at a young age and brought to a central city to be trained and conscripted into service to the state. Society prefers central latitude characteristics, such as dark skin and kinky hair, and disfavors far north and south latitude characteristics, such as light skin and straw colored straight hair. The books are inclusive and even celebratory of differing sexualities and genders.

A millennia ago, the hero defeated evil, and then the world turned to shit. Also set in Sanderson's Cosmere series, the books center around a group of free Skaa (the largely enslaved people in the books), specifically a young woman and a band of rogues who set out to change the destroyed world they've always known. Magic in this world involves consuming and using metals to enhance strength, fling metal, manipulate emotions, among other things. Ash constantly falls from the sky, the sun is cold and red, and the hero from a millennia ago is now the immortal emperor of a dystopian world. The real history of the world has been all but forgotten.

Otherland Series

Just a FYI the way of kings is a great read, but years between books. And no where close to done

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Brandon FUCKING Sanderson. I love that guy.

7 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Everyone should check out the Shades of Magic series by V.E. Schwab. Especially if you loved Vin in Mistborn

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The Expanse is SO good. v

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Illumine is also a good book series.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

DAMN FUCKING RIGHT, I DO!

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Tag me in, like a bitch!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm about to finish the stormlight archive. IT IS AWESOME! Reading Warbreaker then onto the Mistborn series.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You might see some familiar faces in Warbreaker.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Expeditionary Force is a great. Less "Chosen One saving humanity", more "humans are here to fight everything. In space".

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I was skeptical on the series. Its what I call fast-food sci-fi because it doesn't ask big questions usually. Its fun to read though!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yes, yes I do, thank you :)

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I just finished Brandon Sanderson's Steelheart series. I loved it and highly recommend it.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

After reading all current Stormlight books, I’m now just getting to Mistborn. Kinda wish I had read these first but still a solid read.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you’ve finished Oathbringer, make sure to read Warbreaker. There are some really strong Cosmere connections.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Noted. Will probably get that after I finish Mistborn

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not one person has mentioned The Dark Tower. Disappointing seeing a fantasy book post without it listed.

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

It's a great series, and that's the truth.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You should check out The Black Company by Glen Cook. Really awesome series and I love the writing style.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Also, the Farseer Trilogy is fantastic too.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Two great recs here.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you enjoy Sanderson's writing, you'll enjoy Scott Lynch - the Lies of Locke Lamora is a good read. Also Brent Weeks, as others have said

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

If you enjoy excellent fantasy writing in general - Neil Gaiman, Steven Erikson and Steven King's Dark Tower are my highest recommendations.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

fucking love that series

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank god no one has mentioned Terry Goodkind. His Sword of Truth series is one of the dumbest, most awful things ever written.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Also Mark Lawrence's "Prince of Thorns". Icky blech.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Plot: main character is basically god in training. Becomes god in penultimate chapter. Forgets it all in the last. Rinse, repeat.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You forgot all the rape..

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you like Sanderson's stuff, I highly recommend checking out the Lightbringer series by Brent Weeks. It's really an amazing series.

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

It really does feel like a Sanderson series, doesn't it?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's very Sanderson-esque in it's magic and worldbuilding, but a fair bit darker in tone. Not quite GRRM-esque, but tending that way.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

can't wait for "The Burning White"

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

supposed to be out this month, although I heard it was delayed til next year.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it should be out next year, probably about a year from now. (Late summer or fall)

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is the lightbringer series the one with the chroma?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, the Chromeria and light-based magic.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I heard that book 4 was mainly filler compared to the rest, so I’ve decided to wait until 5 comes out and binge the pair of them

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Definitely upvote for both Brandon Sanderson novels. Also the follow up series to Mistborn is pretty good too (my wife and I both enjoy it)

7 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

I think he Wax and Wayne books are even better than the original trilogy. Sanderson has grown a lot as a writer

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

WHAT?! I did not even know this was a thing. I was crushed when I finished the original trilogy. I need more!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Alloy of Law, Shadows of Self and Bands of Mourning for the curious. Sanderson is working on the 4th book. Totally stoked for it.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Isn’t he doing a third trilogy set further in the future?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yep. after the last Wax&Wayne book, the next one will be set in the equivalent of the 80s, IIRC

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THIS HELLS YEAH

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There will be an 80’s/90’s technology trilogy and then a sci-fi level trilogy

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

HYPERION

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

KWATZ!! Hyeprion contos is the best SF series i read...

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And Endymion

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

If I may suggest, The Name of The Wind and A Wise Man's Fear (both of the king killer chronicle series) by Patrick Rothfuss

7 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 2

just finished those last week! =D

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I loved these books, but I can’t recommend this series until he actually announces a date for the third book.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

The 2nd book kind of dragged on at parts compared to the first. I still loved it but I didn’t think it was as good as the first

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I enjoyed them both as well as Slow Regard of Silent Things, but I just can't suggest it to people until I know the third one is coming out.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah I started reading way of kings right after, from what I understand he doesn’t have a problem putting books out.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sanderson is a workhorse. Not only is he constantly producing but he is transparent about what he is working on. 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wishing no disrespect, am I the only nerd on the face of this planet who didn't like The Name of the Wind all that much?

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

I couldn't finish the book personally. I'm still very confused by all the praise it gets.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Same

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

possibly. I just finished it yesterday in a week, thought it was great.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We all have our tastes. I, for one, loved that book. I despise The Last of Us, so that's that. No judgement.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

NOTHING HAPPENED

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They weren’t terrible, but they are way over hyped.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I agree. Wasn't bad but I'm struggling to get through the second book

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It was good, he definitely put a lot of work into building the world. But I don’t really have any interest in reading the third book.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

My favorite fantasy series ever is The Night Angel trilogy by Brent Weeks, didn't see anyone else mention it so I'll throw that in

7 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

I read Lightbringer series before Night Angel series. I MUCH prefer Lightbringer and it seems to me that Weeks learned a lot writing Night A

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

That's how I felt, too. Night Angel is fun, but Lightbringer is seriously up there in quality.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just reread night angel and the new revision is a lot better. I think it’s left parts open for more like the woman he awakens in the tower

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought those were okay, but have you read his Lightbringer Series??? The final book is coming soon, and it is awesome.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I started it before I found out the final book isn't out yet, now I'm stuck here with book series blue balls. Real good stuff.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes! I just recommended to someone in the comments above. It's simply amazing.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was enourmously disappointed with Mistborn.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

I felt like the storytelling, world building, and crew of personalities surrounding Vin more than made up for her 2-dimensional set.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is a shame. The world building is great. The second trilogy might be my favorite sets of books ever created.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Did you finish the trilogy? I have a friend who hated it for years then finished it and said the ending changed his opinion entirely.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah. The main character has less personality than a wooden plank.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

But, like, the reason for that is entirely justified by book 1. No one in the society (or at least the serf class) has personality.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Yeah but the character still has zero personality by the end, after spending time with more interesting characters. There is plenty time 1/

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

development, and it really feels like there's very little. I disagree that I should like the character just because they're MEANT to be 2/

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

a brick wall. "This cake tastes like shit" "AH but it's MEANT to taste like shit." (time for development**) 3/3

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lol there is literally a blob creature with more personality than vin

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Mistborn is about 1/3 as engaging as the Stormlight Archives IMO

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No fantasy list is complete without Robin Hobb. Start with Assassins apprentice and read every trilogy set in that beautiful painful world.

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I read the first trilogy and it was so very meh. I like her world building, but not her characters.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I liked them, but it really is fucking torturous. Poor protagonist can't catch a break, it's just so much self flaggellating agony

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Torturous is right, by the end I desperately wanted fitz to just be happy, but Robin Hobb did a big thing showing that winning doesn't 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

heal the mental damage. He can never shake the fear, self loathing, or self sabotage. Rarely do we see a hero presented in such a way. 2/2

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also the most retarded protagonist name ever, "Fitzchivalry".

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

@OP Have you read any Peter F Hamilton? Try Pandora's Star.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Thirded. Loved the books. I am trying to change my career to acting and I hope that they make a TV series and I can get a part!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Awesome, though, I hope you have a fallback for that pie-in-the-sky goal.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I see it more as an "eventually" thing. I have plans and a path I know I need to follow to get started. Funding's the issue!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Seconded. Hamilton is a bit dry, and his characters aren't the greatest, but the worlds and technology he builds are fascinating.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He did embed the best damn fantasy story I have read in the Void trilogy. Eddiard is an amazing character

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Indeed. The part where he figured out his time trick was one of the greatest roller coasters in a book I've come across.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The man writes like he’s paid by the word but I really enjoyed Pandora’s star and Judas Unchained. Great recommendation.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

have you read the Void trilogy? It's 1200 years in the commonwealth future

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not yet, but it’s on the list so I’ll work my way to it soon enough.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I kinda found the 'alternate' part of that story to be more interesting than the commonwealth part, but still loved it all.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm genuinely thinking about extracting all the dreams and making a book for my SO

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I recommend the First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie. One of the best fantasy series I've read. It starts off kinda slow but it's great.

7 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I don’t think it started slow. Any scene with nine fingers isn’t slow :)

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

logan mother fucking 9 fingers

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Does it start out slow? I thought it started out with Ninefingers foightetin with some flatheads.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

yeah but that didn't seem interesting to me. I didn't get hooked til the Glotka parts and the character development of Jezal

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

same

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Jim Butcher! Dresden, is basically required reading, but Codex Alera is a fun series as well. Then you’ll know about Steak and New Boots.

7 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I love the lore of mythical creatures and magic in Dresden files. So good. Just wish he didn't write scenes with women like a horny nerd.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But his books are basically written for horny nerds xD

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To be fair to that style, Dresden himself is a nerd who rarely gets laid, so it suits the character.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Anytime Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen is not on the list it instantly discredits the list :(

7 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 6

dont get me wrong though I love Brandon Sanderson!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've tried to start that one a few times, it's tough, I couldn't do it.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It’s too complex of a read for most people as you’re just thrown into a world with a well-defined (but not initially explained) magic/gods

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

It needs a list of its own.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I love the series, but it's not for everyone. I try to gauge a person's tastes carefully before recommending it; I don't think I have yet.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If they have good taste, recommend it. If they're a pleb, don't bother.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's a love/hate kind of series. Either people couldn't even get past the first book, or its the best thing ever written. No inbetween.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I read them all but didn’t think they were that good.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

And the paired Ian Esslemont books, the series is at the very top of my 'must read' list for anyone that reads fantasy.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wont lie, that first book throws you into the middle of it and leaves you to figure out the whole gods, races and magic.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

it honestly could use a companion book to explain it all lol but a quick wikki search can set it all quite easily strait for you.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

he just doesn't have characters or narration in it purely for the purpose of exposition. it wouldn't be organic. you wouldnt have...

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

some randome recruit who has never heard of magic or gods and needed to have everything explained in detail to them. they would be aware..

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have you checked out the Demon Cycle by Peter Brett? Also The Kingkiller Chronicles by Pat Rothfuss.. still waiting on book 3 of that tho

7 years ago | Likes 102 Dislikes 0

Waiting like Sum 41

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I heard the 3rd book is about to get released. I'm actually reading again the first 2 :)

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Blasphemy.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

you will never stop waiting XD

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The Demon Cycle began so promisingly. I won't pay money for them after the way Brett wrote about rape though. I can't support that.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How did he write about rape?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The ending of the Demon Cycle was kind of “meh” imo. King Killer and Stormlight are much better series.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Agree, i enjoyed the action and most of the story but the end left a little to be desired.Would be fun if Studio Ghibli got their hands onit

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Demon Cycle was such a disappointment: book 1 book was awesome, 2 and 3 were pretty good, 4 was a drag, 5 was predictable and uninspired.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The demon cycle lost some serious steam at book 3 though. I couldn’t continue after that.

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

I agree.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's worth sticking with it. The new POV characters grow on you and the ending is satisfying.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I agree 100%

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just finished last book and it was soo painful too read towards the end. Just wanted to know how it ends, but i am kind of dissapointed :(

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, i waited so long for that and by the end it was just kind of meh. Loved the first four though and the series as a whole.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The demon cycle is great if you love trash.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

The demon cycle was an amazing random find for me. I picked up the first book in the sale section at a local bookstore and freaking lvoed it

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Patrick Rothfuss has been quoted in an article written by The Times stating "A trilogy? Who said anything about a trilogy? Its a Troll-ogy."

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

“I’m the guy that tricked you into reading a million word prologue.”

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I just finished the 1st in Kingkiller in less than a week. it's Amazing

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Don’t rush to the second. The third is like 5 years in the making.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Started it yesterday.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh no!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No worries, I have a few other series to tide myself over.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I did the same but it was both. And I immediately reread them. Best I’ve read in years

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Rothfuss writes these books so rereads are *required*. So read at your pace. Let it stew for a year. Come back. See twice as much as before.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Probably will.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't read or too fast... you'll be poised waiting for the 3rd

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Starting the 2nd today. I'm aware of the wait. Between this and GRRM, so many other series to try.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Rothfuss is garbage.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 15

I wouldn't say that but I'd say he fucked up the pacing royally. Book 2 is over and his main character has barely finished puberty

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It's the worst kind of anachronistic, self-insertion, wish-fulfillment, power fantasy I've read in a decade.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I've read novels for Halo and Warhammer 40k that were little more than advertising and were still better than the garbage he grunts out.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

And he still has years to cover with this guy becoming this legendary figure before he can start the present day story

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Still got 9 rings(?) to get. In. A. Book.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Rothfuss is a serial reviser, like 300+ rewrites per book

7 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

No wonder its so good

7 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Exactly

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I also think he has realised that he left too much for the 3rd book. He’s better off making a trilogy of trilogies.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah I remember finishing A Wise Man's Fear and going: 'ok there's no way he can wrap this up in one final installment!'

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wouldn't be the first series to do so. I finally checked out the first 2 a couple of weeks ago and they were just EXCELLENT.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

2 of my favourite books to date.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I heard book three is due out on the 29th of neveruary

7 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

My hopes got SO high until the end of that sentence

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Sorry, it just kind of came out...

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Unlike the book.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Way of the Kings is the best high fantasy series I’ve read since The Wheel of Time. It’s no wonder considering Sanderson’s ties to it.

7 years ago | Likes 238 Dislikes 4

Its an amazing series but you PROBABLY dont want to start reading Cosmere there. There's a decent reading order to them if you care.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Witcher is pretty awesome as well. That needs some love in this thread.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I loved Way of Kings. Never could finish Wheel of Time.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

@OP neglected to mention the amazing ARTWORK that's absolutely integral to the world-building in these books.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

My favorite will always be the Codex Alera series

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I dropped Wheel Of Time halfway through book 7. It's become such a drag, nothing ever happens and if it does it's always some curveball

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

that doesn't make much sense at that point and is explained late after the fact, if at all. I prefer Sanderson's works.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It really is, mistbirn and WotK world building is fucking astonishing. Also there is jasnah the most badass female character ever written

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Oh yeah, that's something I really like about Sanderson. He writes amazing female characters that don't EVER tug their braids!

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Haha yes vin is a badass too. Except shallan, especially in the first 2 books, she whines sooooo much.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

To be fair Shallan went through some rough shit and seems to be getting worse compared to the others.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hate how he changes his books through his QA’s though. I’ve lost all interest in him

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

what do you mean?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But have you heard of our Lord Steven Erikson and the Malazan Book of the Fallen?

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Dont forget Count ian c esslemont. Those books have nice ties ins for the series.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

True. He did co write it

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Absolutely loved that series as well

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

For coltaine, for the wickans, for the fallen!

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Got to the second last book in Malazan and couldn't finish it. Absolutely love it until (spoilers next post)

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Whiskeyjack got killed off

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is not the second to last one lol. That happens in book 3?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah I kept going because I hate not finishing a series

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same, I went from Mistborn to way of kings, and then just read every Sanderson work I could find. Favourite author by far

7 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 1

The name of the wind is really good too

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Straight up - when in doubt, I just read Sanderson. Currently making my way through Warbreaker

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Warbreaker was the first thing of is I read (besides Wheel of Time). Such a colorful universe.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Would it blow your mind to know they are connected?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm sure if they've read everything by Sanderson, they know this by now :P.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Considering the Hoid/Wit appearances in every book.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Plus there's the Mistborn Secret History book which kinda starts to blow everything wide open.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The cosmere! Read all of them, not every Sanderson novel is a cosmere novel, and with each reread Sanderson's genius becomes more evident.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He's right, I know about the cosmere, it is awesome though

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've been trying to read way of the kings few times now, but I can't continue after the first 30 to 40 pages. Somehow I hate the way it's

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

written

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It is such a slow start, I agree. But power through and you will be rewarded. Know that the next 2 don't start as slow.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Me too. Liked everything else of his I've read. Can't get traction on WOK. It's unreadable.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It takes a little bit to get into and the start doesn’t really make sense till later. It is definitely worth it.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have tried four times to read it and just can't. Love all his other series though.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Get the audiobook. Michael Kramer is a fantastic reader. They have them in Graphic Audio as well.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's not a bad idea. I'll see if my library has the audio version.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just listen to it before I go to sleep or while driving.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The third book is amazing and very dark

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I havent read it yet, just cant handle another engrossing experience that ends in another years wait. I only read finished series now

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Your loss. You may be in for another 15-20 year wait before Sanderson ties off the entire Cosmere, despite his prolific pace.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

At least read Mistborn. It has such a unique "magic" system in it.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh ive read everything sanderson has written besides oathbringer.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I lost all momentum in the WOT series when I got to book 8. Sanderson is even more detailed than Jordan.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Sanderson doesn't seem to grasp his Jordan's style. The final book felt different in tone altogether, and the epilogue was just unnecessary.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

The epilogue was mostly written by Jordan, iirc.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You do recall correctly.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

8-10 are rough, but they pick up! 12-14 are incredible.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The books 7-9 bog is the thing that prevents me from fully recommending the series. But those aren't Brandon. He's definitely less detailed.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

BS: She sat on a wooden stool. RJ: She sat on a stool made of rich cherry wood from the Mountains of Mist, carved in the Taraboner style.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

RJ, continued: Stools like this one weren't commen on this side of the Spine of the World for [launches into a story about Hawkwing]

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I used to complain about "the tapestries". "Ooooh the tapestries! Did you know there's a boar AND an elk? The tapestries! Hnnnnnnnng!"

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought WOK was so boring! I got a third of the way through. sanderson’s other novels and the rest of the list is spot on.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same. Love his other series. Can't plow through this one.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

WoK is like 90% world building, so it can be a harsh entry point. But for the record, the two books after that are the best I ever read.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm weirdly the opposite. Love WoK, can't stand his other works for some reason

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sanderson has said that WoK has the highest barrier to entry. But if you push through it and learn the world, trust me it's the best. (1/2)

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It has the most unique world, most diverse and interesting characters, and in my opinion, the coolest magic system in The Cosmere. (2/2)

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Before i read any of this books are they finished or you have to wait for the next one in 10 years ?:)

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There are 6 finished mistborn books and at least 4 more yet to be written

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And 3 stormlite archive books been written and Sanderson plans on writing 7 more.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wait,so complete story is not finished, those books arent standalone ?You have to wait 7 more (aka 10 years) for full story or?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Stormlite 2 arcs each consisting of 5 books. You get a great story even if you just read the first 3, they are all about a 1000 pages.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Still not sure does that mean mistborn complete story is finished or you need to wait for those 4 mores ?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mistborn has 3 story arcs the first one is done the 2nd one has one more book that has not been written and the 3rd one has not been started

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The latest one in the series was simply amazing

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

I agree. I only dislike how much Kaladin struggles with what is right all the time =/

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I partially agree, being a former slave must leave a man conflicted. I’m just waiting on the damned armor already lol

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Shallan is still kind of annoying to me, Szeth I am starting to like a lot more.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but that's why he has made such an effective series - the characters have real dilemmas and aren't just tropes. Even Dalinar, the 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

paragon of virtue, has his moments of slip-up. Sadeas, himself, one of the villains of the story, has much of his agenda guided by 2/3

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah which I liked in the first book.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm on book 7 of wheel of time I still fucking hate a majority of the women. Why are they so hypocritical and sometimes just fuckin mean.

7 years ago | Likes 60 Dislikes 2

I truely hated that series. Even after Sanderson took over. I don't understand why it's so loved. I enjoy realistic characterization.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 5

The whole relationship between men and women seems to be the outdated notion "Men can never understand women." So they make the women ...

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Purely irrational creatures that will yell and scream at the drop of a hat. If this is how he views women. I truely feel sorry for him. Also

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

The bdsm made this feel more like a fanfiction at times. Spanked, beaten, and collared women. Not to mention a society of women that love

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Because Jordan had a very, VERY weird perception on women. This and his tendency to drag shit out over hundreds of pages made me drop WoT.

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

THANKYOU!! It’s like a SJW wrote that book in some parts! It was hard to get through at times

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 10

Yeah Robert Jordan knew nothing about writing women sadly.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Partially as a departure from women fantasy tropes, partially because their culture raised them to behave that way, and some are just mean.

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

Also, only women could use magic without going insane. A few thousand years of that kind of power imbalance would embed itself on a culture.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Keep it up, they are annoying but it's worth it. I'm rereading them now and I'm on book 11. I think of the White Tower chapters as lulls.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

The men weren’t great either. They alternated between shrugging submissively to throwing tantrums. Overall, the people were awful & weird.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

you forgot brave, generous and clever. the irrationality...the men have their share of that and i definitely recognize patterna in the women

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Please hang in there- books 5-8 are a train wreck (could of good parts) but the end....ohh my.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Are you KIDDING?? That's like asking someone to eat 4 terrible courses over the next 5 hours, but stick it out because dessert is good!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I have TRIED WoT (really I have), but Cheese & Rice, people, nothing happens!! Begging someone to "stick it out" is not a good selling point

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Spoilerish info follows:

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I felt like the ending was somewhat unsatisfying. Not the overall story arc, that was fine. But Jordan loved every one of his characters(..)

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

(..)and wrote each one as if they were the focus. There was no way to end each of their stories in a satisfactory way without the (..)

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Because the writer doesn't know how to write women. Same reasons all the relationships are just "and then they were dating/married/fucked"

7 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 4

EXACTLY! I am so fed up of the Elaine chapters... I'm on the book 10 and I think I might have t skip 11 and get try the final Sanderson ones

7 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Sanderson saved the series in my opinion. His pacing is so well done.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nothing happens in 10. You can just read the last couple of chapters and be good.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Book 10 is the only one in the series I would consider as actually bad. Some great shit happens in 11 and much of the pacing is fixed.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

11 on are fantastic. The pacing really picks up and you start seeing more action. Gotta get through Crossroads first, though. That’s a slog.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You really shouldn't skip an entire book... I guess you could get away with it if you read the chapter by chapter synopses on 1/

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Library.tarvalon.net but that's barely shorter tbh

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I was going to skip this one and read the all the chapter synopsis, but couldn't bring myself to do it. Regret it now, but there are little

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It’s because they’ve gained Aes Sedai knowledge he says sarcastically, you’ll notice the characters get darker after the constant stress too

7 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 2

What about when Matt breaks them out of that locked room the black ajah put them in (I think book 2 or 3?) Never said thank you or (1)

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Showed any kindness at all just yelled at him for coming there and asked him why he was there

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Spoilers. Ironically that gets addressed in the book you are on. I just finished it and moved to book 8 this week. But still a good point.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

A constant theme is Matt never getting the respect he deserves, but he commands it by the end of the series.
