Finished product

Here’s what I got for free, which was a fair price considering the condition.

the wood was pretty rotten and had to be broken or sawn off- like many steps in this process, I didn’t have a free hand to take pictures or video, so you’ll just have to imagine it.

If you guessed that these just came off like they were supposed to, you are wrong. I took a hammer to each of the 24 bolts and bent them back and forth until they broke off.

This is most of what I used for this project. With the wood and the router that I ended up buying, the whole thing cost about $300, but I already had a belt sander and a drill.

Just a simple hand mitre saw, for straight cuts. Lots of them.

Wood all cut to length(ish)- more on this later.

Mostly sprayed. Just these 2 pieces plus the new hardware took over 1 can of spraypaint.

I’m sure someone out there is better with a router than I am- lots of little burns from moving the tool too slowly? I don’t know.

Always the best part. I used Watco danish oil. 2 coats on each board (make sure you let each coat dry fully or you get a gummy mess.

Don’t settle for less than even boards. Not surprisingly, this came back to bite me later.

Ready to drill.

Matched hardware.

Lost about 3 inches on each when I had to cut everything a second time because of those little length discrepancies. Measure twice, cut once folks.

Feels like I made more mistakes than did things right, but it all worked out in the end. Well worth the effort, though I wish I had documented a little better.

Viral edit- it’s great to read so many positive comments! Making things really is such a rewarding thing to do- send more DIY projects (AKA excuses for me to buy more tools)

Borrow an angle grinder and a cutting wheel to make short work of those bolts next time.

As a contractor, you've got to start somewhere; home projects are the best for a first go. Keep it up man, you did well for your first time.

Awesome work, and the best part is next time you tackle something, you'll have tons of ideas on how to do a step easier or better.

Looks awesome, nice work!

Next time you have rusted bolts, try a can of PB Blast.

You learn by blowing shit up. Welcome to the demolition school of learning. Great job.

That's what she said

Now if only your son could fix the crack in the highrise.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That’s what she said.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You could have made that bench so freaking long.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nice job. Horrible colour.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

He’s right ya know

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh shit, that same kind of bench was outside my childhood home for years.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Favorited for later as I have 2 benches very much like this that I need to fix up as well.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Feel free to message me- happy to give some tips!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

OK most awesome thing here you painted screws too.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think I had a bench just like that. It was really heavy...

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cast iron plus hardwood is definitely on the heavy side going to need help bringing it down to the yard once the final hardware is on.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

+1 for finished product first

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I’ve seen enough of these posts to know what’s up.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Holy shit, are the sides cast iron? If so, my parents have the set: bench, 2 chairs, and table.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes! SO heavy! Do your parents’ have lions on the side? It’s on of my favorite details.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks for sharing, I'm about to do this to an old bench of mine.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well no wonder it was difficult, 10 years old and you restored a bench all by yourself?! *ba dum tss * but for real though, that's awesome a

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

And I love the color

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Only 7, actually!

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Finished project first, bless you. And good freaking work!

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Why didnt you cut them all to the same length? lol

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I tore apart and threw away that exact bench in that approximate state of disrepair when I first got my house. Had I only known!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What type of wood did you use?

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oak -wanted cedar, but there was none at Home depot. They said oak will do, but someone here said it’s not the best for outdoors. We’ll see.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have the exact same chair in same bad condition. Thanks @op I’ll follow your lead

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Let me know if you need any help with any of it. I’m pretty much a professional now. ?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Haha! Thanks mate. When summer arrives it will be my next project

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

/a/ZkXRP1l I have the same bench!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nice!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think it's hilarious that you bought a router for a single project. Mostly because I did the same with a miter.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I mean, I’ll use it again for sure.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's what I said too!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

your next project should be a router table. It will make preventing those burn marks a lot easier

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is the first project I’ve seen on Imgur that I enjoyed. Nice work. The finished product looks amazing, and the process seemed 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

simple, but took a lol of attention to detail and craftsmanship.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Thank you!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fantastic job - it looks awesome!!! My only question is you spent $300 and HOURS of time for a bench that’s $100 or so NEW? For the fun?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Absolutely for the fun. Even the frustrating parts were worth it. Do these really sell for $100?

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Completely understand. I’ve done it too. It may be easier and cheaper to buy new, but that’s not the point. It is to make something.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I bought one for about that 10 years ago - but it’s possible the quality isn’t as nice as the one you have. Still you did a GREAT job!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They go for even less off Walmart sometimes.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But your rendition looks a hell of a lot sturdier and more reliable

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Looks good! You should have spent another 10 bucks on a hack saw, make quicker work of those bolts (angle grinder isn't budget friendly)

6 years ago | Likes 164 Dislikes 5

Hell a dremel could have done the job also I use my dremel all the time to cut bolts.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Or a Dremel tool. Can be used on many other projects.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I ground through a dremel disc before switching to my caveman method, actually.

Bolt cutters

“Money makers”

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But those are for cutting bolt... ohhhhh!

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Padlocks.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You can get an angle grinder and a cut off blade for less than $15 bucks.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Holy shit. I have a hacksaw. Wow... I legit didn’t even think of that.

6 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 1

You don't even need to saw all the way through. Anything over 1/3 will let you snap them quickly. I LOVE the blue paint. Striking.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Man I love that I'm not the only one that forgets how to make my projects easier

6 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

Bolt cutters work well too and aren't too expensive

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

it is right in the name

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Harbor freight sells an angle grinder for $12, it would probably survive just long enough to finish this job.

6 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 1

Join their membership club it is 30 bucks a year and worth it if you but a lot of stuff basically everything is always on sale for you.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have a HF angle grinder and it's pretty great. I mean the switch sucks but it makes stubborn bolts easier to convince

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I take a little more expensive route to cut bolts but I’m a mechanic. Acetylene torch, it’s not stuck if it’s liquid

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeahhh that's a bit more investment. But I've done the I-have-to-get-to-work trick with the butane torch &chisel. When the grinder won't fit

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, this is the first thing I thought.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’ve had a $10 HF angle grinder in my pile of grinders for a decade. I bought it as a throwaway extra and it keeps kicking

6 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

I put that bit in for those who complain about their stuff. I actually plan on buying one soon for a project, that’s how I knew the price

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Same. I bought it to cut holes for a burn barrel about 5 years ago. I don't think I've even put a new grinder on it. I use it a lot

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

OP spells miter mitre, so may not live somewhere they have Harbor Freight?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I actually have one right nearby. I think I actually spell that both ways for some reason.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And I just checked out harbor freight the other day. Lots of scary-cheap power tools that I would expect have to sign a waiver when buying

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nah, they’ll sell you anything so long as your money’s not counterfeit. It’s like the dollar store of power tools. Sometimes you luck out

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The main failure mode on those is the locking pin for changing discs. Had 2 they both failed the same way breaking the casing around the pin

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mine is getting harder and harder to find to change discs, I think you're right

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mine broke the casing and fell out completely.
