T minus 10 hours...

I goofed, somehow a good goof. i did some research for my elective using my old genetics degree as a springboard and somehow ended up with some good insights into the current efficacy of exome sequencing on previously undiagnosable intellectual disability in my country's patient population.

turns out that's interesting enough to have a medical student presenting his research to a couple hundred big scary consultants.(attendings)

Why the hell did i get my public speaking anxiety self into this???

Get as close to the stage as you can 20 minutes before your talk. Let the adrenaline go—it will burn off in time for you to start speaking.

You got this, OP!!

Set up the slide deck like a journal article: Background, research question, why Q is important, data, methods, findings, future research.

thank you!

Top tip, ignore anyone who says picture them naked or imagine they arnt there. No point kissing yourself, but point over hyping it either.

Deal with the matter at hand, not the matter your brain is blowing out of proportion

Take a propranolol

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

When world renowned experts want to hear what you have to say, speak slowly, clearly and loudly. What you have to say is important.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Propranolol - was a game changer for my public speaking..test dose first..And get used to speaking - you’ll be doing lots of it!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Propranolol to the rescue?

If they're sitting in your audience, they want to be there :)

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Power point the shit out of it. Less talking

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That is so Raven.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Would it be more or less comforting to know that even attendings have Imposter Syndrome?

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

actually yes it does

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

start off with a joke to put people at ease. "EXOME? oh my gosh, i thought we were doing INTRONS !!" -- they laugh, then start your talk

7 years ago | Likes 123 Dislikes 2

Or you laugh, awkwardly, then start your talk anyway.

T. Martin shooting trial: "knock knock. Who's there? George Zimmerman. George Zimmerman who? Congrats, you're on the jury." Crickets.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

it's a scientist telling a joke... all the laughter will be awkward :)

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Good job homie.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just imagine they're all there to steal whatever original, uncopyrighted ideas you have.....

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Relax they will know you are nervous as shit

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Whatever you do, don’t imagine them naked, you’ll either get the giggles or throw up!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Blessings in disguise my friend. Blessings in disguise.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

People say picture the audience naked it helps, however it didn’t help me, as I froze on the stage with a hard on

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good. Get your name out there. It will help you during salary negotiations.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Create excellent slides. Try to put six lines or less on each slide. Remember they will be looking at the slides more than you. 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Get help from someone who has done a lot of presentations. Add pictures where you can. Sweat creating the slides, but go with the flow...

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

...once you are using your slides. If there are mistakes you see during the presentation, ignore them or use them to illustrate your point.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

thank you

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You’re welcome! Please let me know how it goes.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1/You're not presenting to a ton of people, you're ranting about a topic you're passionate about to the dinner table. Focus on the content

7 years ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 0

2/and less so on the presentation and it will all come more naturally. You already know the info, you already know how to talk about it and

7 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

3/you already know the people there are interested in what you have to say. So just go on your rant and regurgitate what you know.

7 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

This is good advice, @OP. You should also practice your presentation to a small group of friends at least once if not more.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

This idea/concept/strategy has gotten me through every presentation I've done in the past 5 years.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also, if there is a QA after, prior to doing the speech practice what you will say to possible questions out loud. That helps your 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

brain learn the answer and make you more comfortable when you have to answer the crowd.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As someone who has worked through performance anxiety, I won't give any cheap tricks. The truth is, once you mess up once, you realize 1/

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

that it's okay to make mistakes in front of people and that groups are generally forgiving and understanding and appreciative regardless 2/

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

of how well you personally feel you did. You're likely gonna be a harsher critic than anyone watching. 3/

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just do your best and let that be enough, you'll get better each attempt regardless. end/

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It'll be fine, just a couple hundred people. Most of them experts with decades of experience carefully examining your work.

Jesus this makes me so scared for OP

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

only a minor make-or-break-it moment, nothing to lose sleep over

7 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Just picture everyone in your underwear

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I don't see how being aroused is going to help.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

People arent staring at u anymore. Duh.

A friend wrote her dissertation on the Stanford prison exp. It was pretty scathing about it. Her lecturer arranged for Zimbardo to be there.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

every modern psychologist admits that the prison experiment had some deep ethical / methodological flaws

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

was Zimbardo's conclusion True? was it *valid*? .... discuss

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, but not many have had to tell the man to his face as part of their final university assessment, and have it matter for their final mark

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yeah, that's a tough road to walk

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Speak slowly, don't rush, keep breathing. That'll at least give you an extra moment or two to manufacture bullshit.

7 years ago | Likes 109 Dislikes 0

When presenting a speech, the speaker often believes they are talking too slow and will rush. Active breathing. Purposefully pause.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yup. And if you pause and think that it's been for ages, believe me, nobody else even noticed.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that's the thing. i dont think i can bullshit 200 people who have 100 times the experience i do XD

7 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Don't speak to the audience. You're not there to engage them, you're there to present your work. Don't worry what they're thinking.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you are really anxious about it, look into beta blockers.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Remember, they aren’t experts on what you’re talking about. Everyone thinks that. Ask your doc for a Beta Blocker for the anxiety. It helps!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Best way to beat public speaking fear is exposure therapy. Speak at a church, do a karaoke night, etc.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You were selected to present this so it means that you’re doing really good

7 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Or it's one of those social experiments that the kidz do these days.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

This is often a fallacy in academia. Everybody has different backgrounds and history. People are in that room because they want to be!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey, if I (with generalized anxiety disorder) was able to speak at a conference as a patient in a room full of neurologists1

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Neuroscientists, and other people who have more letters after their name than their name, you can do this. Remember that what you have to 2

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Say is important, no matter how you end up getting it out of you.
