As a DC guy, this is both brutal and yet totally on point.

The only thing sustaining me after my childhood superhero was slaughtered by Ryan Reynolds in 2011 is the DC Universe Animated films. I'm preparing for the worst when Max rolls out the new GL series on streaming. Until then, I'll keep watching cartoons.

I just want them to do a Kyle Rayner show or movie. Imagine the possibilities. Summoning a giant green Scooby Doo to pin bad guys, or whatever they want

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bruce Timm's justice league unlimited would have obliterated Thanos' narcissistic ass with just Bats and superman. The rest of the team would just be there for the show.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I loved the DC cartoons when I was growing up. Those voices are the ones I always imagined when reading the comics. I want there to be good DC movies so badly.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I feel like all these people would have a problem with Thanos. The first few stones he got were power, space, and reality. The first two negate most of them, the 3rd negates superman.

The Flash has many issues, one of them is Ezra Miller - any other series would've kicked him to the curb for half the shit he got up to (many with underaged girls)

Green Lantern was so bad, even time-traveling Deadpool couldn't fix it. Hal Jordan's ring must have been powered by cringe energy.

Green Lantern sucking wasn't Ryan Reynolds fault.

Started watching jlu last week only seen the first but man does it hold up

I liked green lantern

I feel like in all honesty thought people are just tiring of mega blockbusters for Super Heroes overall. More excited for the Death of the Flower Moon and some Sci Fi more. I wish there was like a boom into Sci Fi more. They have Dune 1 Part 2 coming. I thought the first was okay. They have some other Sci Fi coming that looked interesting. I'm sick of "Thanos so Dark Seid, Avengers so JL, Multiverse so Multiverse". DC is just literally playing copy you to everything now.

MAX gave us Harley Quinn and Peacemaker. Let them speak.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It might help if we could physically see it. I mean I know Batman is dark, but cmon.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ryan didn't do that. The writers and directors did. I thought the movie was fine personally.

2 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

Yeah it was no cinematic masterpiece and there is a long list of things that could have been done better. I won't go out of my way to watch it, but I've landed on it a number of times while surfing. It's definitely no where near my "avoid at all costs" list.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Agree about it not being Ryan Reynolds' fault. He more than redeemed any hard feelings I had once Deadpool came out (frankly even before when he was in the Wolverine ensemble film).

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Given that he redeemed dead pool after wolverine, I'd like to see him play one of the Green Lanterns in a not shit movie.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What if it is a continuation of GL:TAS?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is a terrible answer, but I got really really turned off by the 3D production style of that series because it was way, way overused in the early 2000s. I might have to muscle through it anyway because of the storytelling.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That was pretty much my reaction. But the story was pretty good and kept me watching.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unpopular opinion, the DCU movies are better than MCU movies. MCU movies are a paint by numbers, generic, overly predictable movies. Every hero has one of two sob story backgrounds, orphan or shitty parents. Every movie is the same, hero who's down and out finds hope in the "most unlikely" of places. At least the DCU fucking tries some originality. Suicide Squad at least the heros had different backgrounds, didn't like each other at the end, and had a scary AF leader.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Remember that Darkseid movie? Oh...right.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I never strayed into the ForeverWar surrounding it, but I did enjoy the Snydercut much much more than the theatrical cut from Joss Whedon. That said, it still didn't raise the near-corpse of DCEU out of it's impending grave.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The MCU cast shouldn't have struggled either as long as they had the time stone but they made up a bullshit reason why they couldn't use it. Strange could have Portaled the rest of the characters to titan and just fucked Thanos up but instead they gave him plot armor.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm cautiously optimistic for the new DC movies, but as a whole, fairly burned out on super hero movies.

yes, I couldn't believe how bad the GL movie was.... such a waste. On the other hand, I have really enjoyed some of the more recent DC movies. Seeing the Flash tomorrow and keeping my fingers crossed!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The DC animated shows are far superior to the live action ones.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Agreed. but their animation style makes me want to vomit. It's like they took what made the original BtaS awesome and then watered it down to the bare minimum. I haven't been able to watch any DC animated stuff in years because of it. Sad, really.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

to be fair, dc's stories arent that interesting. they are all about people who are stupidly powerful except when plot armour-ium appears

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Are you kidding? DC always had the best stories. Knightfall, The Dark Knight Returns, Death of Superman, the Killing Joke, Flashpoint, All-Star Superman, Blackest Night, Kingdom Come... The ones that actually had an impact on the genre as a whole.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i mean, its kinda the same reason i didnt like captain marvel, she felt op and could have just solo'ed everything. Same with wanda

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Marvel and DC have the *same* stories - largely due to them being written and drawn by the same people hopping companies. For every Knightfall, there's a Demon In A Bottle. Death of Superman:Civil War. Flashpoint:Days of Future Past. All-Star Superman:Phoenix Saga. Blackest Night:Thor and the God Butcher. Kingdom Come:Secret Wars. The only consistent difference between the properties is average power levels, in that most of the Justice League is nigh-invincible and few of the Avengers are.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Considering all of it is just modern mythology telling morality tales, I'd argue the power difference alters the relatability of the characters. Marvel's heroes tend to be inspirational, while DC's are aspirational. But as a side effect, it does appear that grander movie audiences don't connect as well with a cast that's 90% indestructible.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I never saw the reason to need to fight. I prefer marvel stuff but DC does a lot good too. I'm excited that Blue Beetle might be good. I'd love if there were more people doing comic book adaptations because they'd increase the range of what is acceptable in them.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

yea... lets have the real crossover ... Batman vs Ironman ... see who is the bigger richi playboy ^^

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Totally. There are so many heroes in both DC and Marvel that break classic superhero molds, and I'd love to see those ones lifted up. There was a glimmer of that with Moon Knight, but the final result didn't ultimately do it for me.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I feel a reason most DC falls flat is power leveling. They all are presented as unstoppable and in their prime, no real struggles. (Batman is an outlier). Granted Marvel is bad too, but it was less common before End Game. Post-end game seems on track to lose its ground Sadly.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Hadn't thought about that, but I can see your point. Keeping this grounded in GL stuffs (being my main jam), that would make a helluva argument for a hero like Jessica Cruz, who got introduced through an act of hardcore trauma that followed her all the way through her induction as a Green Lantern and make her oddly vulnerable despite having crazy-ass power.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I agree completely. Both about the problematic power levels of DCU characters and that the MCU has really fallen off.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

After seeing Flash, I don't know why anyone would have any hope for any future DC movies.

2 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 4

Flash was enjoyable but that was only with the knowledge that it wasn’t going anywhere after that

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

James Gunn's Superman sounds promising.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

The trailer make me think it's gonna be a turd. The Flash was surprisingly ok though

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You had me a bit excited there, but it is Reyes and not Dan Garret or Ditko's Ted Kord with a possible Booster Gold team-up.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Is it Reyes and Kord, though?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How could you not like Jaime?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He is just kind of generic B role DC filler, but maybe that is because I am a much bigger fan of the older versions of the Blue Beetle.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dan Garret was the inspiration behind golden age Batman and Green Hornet, and Ditko is a favorite of mine. How is Reyes supposed to stack up to that?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Jamie is irrevocably attached to an aggressive AI with extremely powerful weapons. It wants to turn him into a villain and he fights with it to use that power to help people instead. Also, one would expect this plot to be all grimdark, but his relationship with his friends, family, and the AI itself gives it humor

I haven’t seen a good DC animated show or movie in a while. But What if? was great and spiderverse *chefs kiss*

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Marvel used to do some good animated stuff. Avengers Earths Mightiest Heroes was pretty good. After that everything fell off.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

the DCAU remains an incredible accomplishment, even amoungst live action. unfortunately its tough to get anyone to sit down and watch cartoons from 20 years ago.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

They are still going strong! They are some from 2020 or so that are pretty good.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Nope

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

there have definitely been some good DC animation since (Young Justice for example), but the DCAU was a shared universe that ended after the JLU series.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

DC’s live action movies have always been bad, but recently they got unwatchable. Black Adam was one of the worst movies I’ve seen in a long time, then I saw Shazam 2. Luckily I streamed them instead of going to the theatre.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

man, and Shazam 1 was a tiny bit of hope for something good.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I had great hopes for black Adam until they started to try turning him into a hero. He should've shoved that catchphrase where the sun doesn't shine.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The Marvel movies were well planned and competently made, but that's all. None of them hold a candle to the Christopher Nolan Batman movies. A shame DC shit the bed with everything else.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 8

Thanks dude, u nailed it. I got downvoted for expressing the same opinion!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The funny thing is that I feel like one of the biggest gripes with DCEU is what I dislike about MCU. Many people complain that too many of the movies suffer from everyone being too gritty/dark, removing a lot of the characterization of the characters (Superman shouldn't act like Batman). However, my issue with MCU over the years is how they do the same, but with silliness. EVERYONE acts like iron man, and it makes interactions seem weird/less interesting.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I think Chris Evans did a good job of bringing seriousness with Cap, but he has gotten drowned out. Guardians and the last couple Thor movies were hits, so now they are trying to make everything slapstick. It's why Hemsworth and Evans are done with their roles, partly. It's gotten silly.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I agree. In the MCU, everyone is flip. Planets get blown up, people die, but ya can't kill everyone's sense of humor! Rarely does any Marvel movie feel like it's taking anything seriously.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

#Truth Some heroes are funny, some are dark AF. Let them have a spectrum, dammit.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exactly, I don't mind sarcastic or gritty heroes. I have an issue when ALL the characters are gritty/serious or ALL sarcastic. If you could switch out a character, and have it still work, something's wrong. Like if you replaced batman with Superman in the animated movies, but kept the dialogue, everyone will be upset. But replace thor with Capt America in the MCU (keeping dialogue the same) and no one would notice since they are now the same character

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'd be 3000% down for a Justice League that acted more like a group of college kids stuck together on a semester-long group assignment. Someone is bringing baskets of muffins and transcribed study notes while another one is stalking and kicking the shit out of date rapists in between classes.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

This. Also, there are great opportunities when you mix up the personalities. There was a whole Odd Couple vibe happening for a bit with GL and Batman in the DCAU films that was actually really fun/funny.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exactly. You can have different types of humor just by introducing different personalities. Like there's one scene in the DCAU where flash is awkwardly trying to invite batman to a flash day event and he agrees resulting in another hero basically calling Batman soft and that he would never go there and batman just gives him a blank look cutting to the guy attending the event as well. That's funny and interesting bc of the different clash of personalities

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If it makes you any better, in Dead Pool 2 he goes back in time and shoots himself in the head before he accepted the Green Lantern role.

2 years ago | Likes 962 Dislikes 2

Ok but did Zac Snyder do a movie like that and save us from Batman v Superman?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You say that like it was somehow Ryan's fault that movie was so awful.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Yea I've yet to see it... but I've never thought it's lack of quality was his fault at all. Could be wrong...

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ryan played the same character he usually plays, the thing so many of us love about him, the lovable jerk. I thought he was miscast (#teamNathanFillion), but did a Ryan Reynolds job of it. But man, the stuff that was happening around him was just ... man.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I actually was okay with it. I was in the Navy at the time and worked on F/A-18 supers. Not to mention he met his wife then so, all on all a win for Mr. Reynolds.

The green lantern movie had some highlights, it looked right and the casting was good, the plot was shit though. Shouldn’t have tried to go with Parallax as then villain and gone with rogue man hunter robots, Lobo, or Atrocitis to introduce the other crops early.

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

It looked "right" except it was weirdly dark for a movie all about making things with light. They could have brightened it up a bit. But I agree with you on the villains. Lobo would have been awesome

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lobo is another hard cast, though. Danny Trejo, perhaps? He's already got the mustache 😁

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's gonna be Momoa now

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nolans Dark Knight trilogy?

2 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 5

Batman is a DC character, but those aren't "DC movies", they're *Batman* movies. They wanted to jump right into a cinematic universe but didn't want to establish the groundwork for it.

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 3

Sure, that’s how I see it as well! But still from the DC universe.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That started DC’s problems. The Dark Knight Trilogy made money, and was dark and gritty. So DC thought every comic book movie should be dark and gritty. Even stuff like Superman, which shouldn’t be. They changed their characters in chasing dollars, and it’s been a disaster.

2 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

The darker DC actually (initially) made money and got audiences after the camper and brighter films of the 90's haemorrhaged cash and fan goodwill. The problem with current DC is in no way the darker tone of the storytelling (which most modern fans DO actually prefer) but the ability to make a decent film to match it. The problem, in short, is talent.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Most data I've seen shows no one wanted the dark/gritty now or 15 years ago. It was just an acceptable trope for movies that benefited from it. But only a minority of fans ever preferred it.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

The growing attraction to darker films is proportional to the darker, more cynical times we live in - camp becomes insulting - but what was lost along the way is that these are supposed to be HEROES. People you ASPIRE TO, because aspiring to be as good as they are is the best mere mortals like us can manage. They are EXAMPLES. Larger Than Life. And if you want to show the person inside the hero, then show moments of human strength, not human weakness - compassion instead of fear, for example.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And which data would this be?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's a sort of Diderot Effect, but instead of upgrading all your possessions to match the one cool thing you got, it's movie producers trying to get the rest of the DC movies to match Nolan

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I enjoyed the 1st one, loved the 2nd, and the 3rd is an utter cluster of a let down. Plus I find Bale's Batman voice to be annoying.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

First one worked, absolutely detested the other two - and yeah, they really need to stop trying to "growl" Batman's voice, he's meant to sound intimidating and commanding (Conroy got that), not like he has a sore throat and a blocked sinus.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

First 2 are better than any Marvel movie ever made IMO.

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 21

I don't like Nolan at all and you're still not wrong. Marvel movies are sometimes fun or interesting but they've never been good films.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I mean, they're good, but c'mon. Iron Man.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 4

Iron man 1 and 3 were good, 2 was decent. I saw that the Batman movies are rated higher on IMDB as well, if that matters, dunno. Just surprised you guys think Iron man movies are THAT good.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I'd argue that Iron Man 1 > Batman Begins, but Dark Knight > the rest of the Iron Man movies. But the Bale Batman movies aren't part of DC's cinematic universe, as I understand it. Definitely not the Snyderverse.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Heath Ledger's performance easily elevates tDK to above Iron Man IMO

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

You might be right.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I would say TDK and Winter Soldier are on pretty level playing fields. Though Ledger takes the cake individually, CA-TWS compilation of characters and the story is better. I love both movies in all honesty. And don't get tired of either on re-watch.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just rewatched tDK and it is still awesome. I've only seen tWS once, and don't remember being impressed. maybe I'll give it another go.

Obv, that isn't the ONLY reason DCEU is so bad. The other big ones are a) the lack of a unified story, b) the lack of an overarching villain across various movies, and c) the CGI fuck feat of the final battle (most of which the MCU doesnt fall for)

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Ya, DCEU is pretty much cursed at this point. If I had a magic wand, I'd want a couple of under-used DC heroes (including GL) to get properly done up by having one or both of the Nolan brothers to write the script and then have Denis Villeneuve shoot the film. Total fantasy, but a nerd's gotta dream.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

How about we go out on a limb and give it to Tarantino? Whole different flavor of dark and gritty, and it might just work. WW's feet ain't going to be safe, though.
