Best advice I can give: The game is challenging, but never unfair. If it seems so, it's just trying to tell you something. Try a new strat.

It's a lot quicker and there's no shield, it's all dodge and parry. If you played an agile character in DS, it's similar. Just go faster.

Also I'd say in terms of difficulty/control feel/enemy setup it's closer to DS3. DS1 is kinda old and slower in many ways.
