Lesser-known anime you might like and be interested in watching.

Genshiken

Genshiken (A.K.A. The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture) is about a boy who doesn’t know if he wants to be an anime otaku or a video games otaku. So he goes off the deep end and becomes the most otaku-ey otaku that over otaked a ku and lived happily ever after. Seriously. It’s a story about accepting yourself for who you are. The first season and the OVA adapt the manga very well. The second season, less so.

RahXephon

I imagine this is how RahXephon came into being:

Executive 1: What are we going to make for our next anime?
Executive 2: What if... what if we just made Neon Genesis Evangelion? Like, literally re-make the whole thing but with a bigger budget and call it something else?
Exec 1: I dunno, don’t people hate it for being angsty?
Exec 2: Okay, we’ll cut down on the angst by 50%. Sound good?
Exec 1: Sure. And we’ll make sure to have a mind screw ending that won’t make any real sense, right?
Exec 2: Of course. Although, perhaps we should add a coda that explains a couple things but only if you were really paying attention. You know, to make it more accessable.
Exec. 1: I like the way you think. Let’s greenlight this sucker right now!

Pumpkin Scissors

Pumpkin Scissors as a name makes no sense at all, despite a valiant effort in-universe to make sense out of it. The story in general isn’t too special and there’s a real “trying-to-be-like-Fullmetal-Alchemist-but-not” vibe to it. However, it’s executed rather well. The characters are likable and even the most cliche parts are done well enough that it’s still enjoyable. It’s not a perfect show, but it’s worth watching. Plus one of the main characters is a dude who destroys tanks with his bare hands and a large caliber pistol. That’s gotta count for something.

ZegaPain

ZegaPain would be easy to describe as “The Matrix meets Evangelion,” and that would be a fairly accurate, if simplistic description. But it’s also so much more than that. As with most great shows, the characters are what make it work, and the characters in this show are very well done. It’s also got some great plot twists you don’t necessarily see coming. The biggest problem is that it’s hard as balls to find DVDs of it anymore. I don’t ever condone piracy, but if that’s the only way you can find this show... I won’t judge you. Also, apparently there was an XBox game based on it. I have no idea how good that is though.

Ghost Hunt

Ghost Hunt is an excellent recommendation for the season. Based on some light novels, it has some excellent, short, multi-episode story arcs. Some of them are genuinely scary, I’ll be honest. The last story arc is a bit of a letdown, unfortunately, and they never made any more episodes based on the remaining novels. But up to that point it’s excellent. Oh, and the Christmas story will make you bawl your eyes out. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Moon Station Dallos

Dallos is widely considered to be the first ever OVA. It's what you get when a Japanese animator reads The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and decides to adapt it. I last watched this a long time ago when I was a kid. I remember liking it but also not understanding what the heck was going on. It may or may not be good, but if you’re interested in the history of anime as a medium, Dallos is important to watch, if only for being the first direct-to-video anime ever.

The Vision of Escaflowne

Finally, we have Escaflowne. I remember this anime being huge back in the 90s, but I rarely see people talking about it anymore. I think it’s time for a revival. It’s an epic story of a young schoolgirl being sent to the invisible moon in the sky populated by humans, catgirls, and dragons. Oh, and they have giant mecha. Really, this show has something for everyone and it plays all of it well. It’s got romance, giant mecha battles, heroic heroes, psychotic villains, several coming-of-age stories and more. I’ve always been surprised at how well it packs so much story into 26 episodes. There’s also a movie I haven’t seen set in a different “darkest timeline” style continuity, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Up voted for the descriptions.

I love anime and I'd only heard of 2 on this list, so thank you @OP for not posting the same 10 as everyone else :)

Ghost Hunt is pretty amazing.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Huh, an actual list of shows I haven't heard of despite having 300+ completed entries in MAL and 100~ in plan to watch. Have a +1

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'll be hitting 500 soon and I've only heard of Escaflowne. Maybe I'll get around to these one day.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Add Ghost Hound, that shit was crazy.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What about Star Driver? Seems pretty good.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Star Driver is fantastic, but boy oh boy is it campy and silly. If you can handle that, it's definitely worth a watch.

First list of anime someones put up where i haven't seen any AND want to watch all of them! Thanks OP

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I can personally recommend Escaflowne and RaXephon. And, have you heard of Rayearth?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ghost Hunt made me shit myself. Like that one time where they couldn't oust the demon in the mansion was brutal.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ghost hunt is really good!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I know its a poor question, but what anime is it comparable to?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Er its a half mix of mech action and cool story but its been many years since ive seen it but its only 26 eps and is well worth the watch

Escaflowne, Dance of Curse https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_49H_N43jQ

That RahXephon gif. That scene. If you did not want to weep at that moment, you might not be human at all.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ghost hunt is good

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Completely forgot that I watched Pumpkin Scissors.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It started out promising enough, but then the last four episodes had the cast stuck in a goddamn room just talking.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm sure it's one of those cases where it was following the source (manga) but the anime had to end but the manga was still ongoing.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A quick search shows that it is still ongoing, bloody hell.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

T_T man, I've been wanting a sequel for ages now! argh!!!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Besides Escaflowne I've never heard of any of these, dayum son... It's been awhile since that's happened, good job @OP

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Escaflowne made me fall in love with anime as a kid when it was on fox. So so good

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Doesn't matter because at the end of the day, all of our favorite animes are still shit.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Op has good taste

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

NO! NO MORE ANIME LISTS

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

You should've mentioned Outlaw Star; it's not that famous, but I equate it to being a more bluesy, anime version of Firefly.

Not from my experience; I've often brought up Outlaw Star in a public forum, and only a few usually know what it is.

2001 was still a long time ago. I was only 4 years old then, and we didn't have Toonami in Australia.

It was on Toonami, so it's plenty more popular than just about everything on this list.

Escaflowne is NOT lesser-known...

9 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 9

neither is Genshiken :)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've never heard of any of these...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Man ive never even heard that show and my old roomie subscribed to crunchy roll

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

To be Fair the Gif is from the "A Girl in Gaea" movie which is lesser known.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I didn't know about that and I'm sure alot of other people dont know. So shove it

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 10

Still doesn't change the fact its not "Lesser-known".

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

In Rinnosuke's defense, Escaflowne was broadcast in the US on FoxKids & Escaflowne was sufficiently popular, globally, to warrant a movie

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

The movie however, sucks so much it hurts. Don't let it be your introduction to Escaflowne.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm sure he meant it in the context of the overall view of things, it was licensed and dubbed for western viewership. Sure not everyone has

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

seen it but compared to something that hasn't been licensed, more people will obviously have come across the english dubbed anime.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Most of these aren't lesser known just older. Genshiken is still going in manga form I believe, and Escaflowne is practically iconic.

9 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 4

well i've never heard of these and will now be checking them out so he achieved his goal

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've been involved in the anime con scene for over a decade. The number of attendees that don't know Escaflowne is staggering.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Old enough that people who've started anime a few years ago don't know em, i haven't seen them.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Yeah but by that sentiment a show like Love Hina is lesser known despite the fact that it defined the harem anime subgenre. Just because-

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I never said either. But when you like something, don't you Google for more? The world isn't so literal friendo

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

-newer people haven't seen it doesn't mean the show is lesser known.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

I disagree, not sure how to word my argument though.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And 140 characters would probably make it difficult to put across even if you did. Let's just agree to disagree.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Aye, sounds good.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Escaflowne has the best musical score ive heard in anime. For me atleast i can never seem to forget the music

9 years ago | Likes 172 Dislikes 3

Noob @OP labeled it as a lesser known anime. During its time of debut, Escaflowne was competing with Gundam and Voltron.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Actually, I'm 99% sure Escaflowne just had a successful Kickstarter for a new English Dub.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes, but according to my friend it's not very well done.

Yoko kanno did the score i believe. Incredible

9 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 0

Her flute pieces for Escaflowne were fantastic. I used them for my solo auditions in classical band.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So of course it's good, she is a god.

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

you should really check out some of Yuki Kajiura's works then. She makes some epic arrangements for anime.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

if you haven't already, check out the .hack series, fate/zero, pandora hearts, noir, el cazador de la bruja, tsubasa chronicles, and madoka

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

.hack is a little too slow, so are noir and cazador to an extent. Tsubasa is... underwhelming, Fate/zero and Madoka Magica are it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

oh, by no means am I advocating their excellence as story telling experience. just listing off some series where her music really shines.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In my opinion, best musical score goes to the Studio Ghibli films. If you play one of the movie's themes, I normally pick up on it quickly.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just because it is easily recognizable does not make it the best... It's like if I tell you whether a rainbow cookie has M&M pieces or other

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fair enough, but it is recognizable for me for it is memorable. They invoke emotions like no other

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wouldn't give it no. 1, but it's way up there. Though I question putting fucking ESCAFLOWNE on a list of "lesser-known" anime...

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

I think it doesnt get the recognition it deserves when put next to cowboy bebop, evangelion, and the likes

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's lesser-known to millenial weeaboos who think the best animes are from Shonen-Jump. Watch something long enough after 200eps and well...

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

I remember watching it 5 years ago. never finished it, and can't really remember why. something about it taking too long? dunno.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

At least you didn't have to suffer the horror that is Foxcaflowne.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That could be why he never finished it. Not even I remember Fox finishing airing the entire series.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah...that's the reason why I never finished it...just like they killed Jessica Alba's Dark Angel series. Fuck Fox.
