“Air is the element of freedom. The Air Nomads detached themselves from worldly concerns, and they found peace and freedom -- And they apparently had great senses of humor!” - Iroh

The Airbenders
In the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender (ATLA) and The Legend of Korra (TLOK), each of the four nations have their own customs, traditions, and histories. Of those four nations, the Air Nomad’s history, and particularly Avatar Aang’s history, is the most tragic. After the Fire Nation, under the order of Fire Lord Sozin, nearly wiped out the entire Air Nomad civilization, Avatar Aang was the only airbender left to continue the airbending traditions and form.

The Air Nomads were peaceful people. They detached themselves from worldly problems and concerns. Finding peace and freedom was the key to solving their difficulties in life. Airbenders continually sought spiritual enlightenment, and, as a result, all children born into the Air Nomads were benders. The first airbenders learned their art from the flying bison.

Airbending

Airbending is my personal favorite of the four elements to watch, because it is based off of a very unique kung fu called Baguazhang.

Baguazhang
The Baguazhang style of martial arts, also called "circle walking" or "Eight Trigram Palm", is known for its constant circular movement, which makes it difficult for opponents to attack directly or land a blow.

It is an impressively evasive form, which makes it very well suited for the air nomad philosophy of nonviolence.

Baguazhang involves smooth coiling and uncoiling actions. Such moves employ dynamic footwork, throws, and hand techniques. A common tactic is to maneuver behind an opponent and mirror their movements, preventing them from turning to face the practitioner.

Baguazhang Weapons
Baguazhang also utilizes a large variety of weapons in their training. Some are common weapons such as knives, straight swords, spears, and staves. Then there are the not so common weapons, like the deer horn knives shown above...

… And the massive Bagua broadsword. (How bad do you want a reason to take one of these magnificent fuckers into glorious battle?)

Circle Walking
The reason Baguazhang is also called "circle walking" and "Eight Trigram Palm" is because it utilizes training method called “circle walking of the Eight Trigrams”. Practitioners walk around the edge of a Bagua circle in various low stances, facing the center, and periodically change direction as they execute forms. Above is an example of a real-world Bagua circle…

… and here is one in the courtyard of Air Temple Island. Kinda cool that the creators threw that in there.

Summary

Airbenders have the power to overwhelm many opponents at once with large and powerful attacks, and could potentially be the most deadly of the bending arts. However, due to the pacifist nature of the Air Nomads, they often adapt to the situation surrounding them and prefer evasive maneuvers as opposed to direct confrontation.

Air is the element of freedom. The key to airbending is flexibility and finding and following the path of least resistance. While airbending is notable for being almost purely defensive and evasive, it is also the most dynamic of the four bending arts.

“Airbending is all about spiral movements. When you meet resistance, you must be able to switch direction at a moment's notice. The key is to be like a leaf in the wind.” – Tenzin

[Seriously though, this video is really cool. This guy looks like Jesus in a trench coat, but his Bagua is flawless. It’s one of the better videos I came across]

I don't see no gender bending here, seems very transphobic of you OP

I'm hoping that in actual combat they wouldn't be turning their back as much as spinny gif lady.

I thought the scene where Tending took on Zaheer was amazing. He never really fought, then all of a sudden he's kicking ass

I always upvote Avatar: The Last Airbender and Avatar: The Legend of Korra.

Very interesting. Such a shame however that Legend of Whorra fucked everything up.

It was ok.

I agree

I read all 4 parts and makes me miss ATLA. I would like to see a new series of either between ATLA and Korra or an earlier Avatar.

Well, the comics are covering the time in-between at the moment, so there's that.

A true display of the power of Air bending is displayed in the legend of Korra. Zaheer was a fucking beast

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah except Korra made it inherent magic ability instead of something you have to train to attain.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but i was glad they made him be outclassed by Tenzin when they fought. Tenzin only lost because he was outnumbered.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

True true, even though Zaheer hasn't had bending abilities before, I'd say that that in itself speaks of his raw talent

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That what I loved about that scene. Talent vs mastery. Zaheer was more powerful but tenzin had the experience.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Man I do love some good old avatar posts.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well you're in luck because this one's good AND old

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know isn't it great?!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was always disappointed they didn't come up with an of shoot of air bending. Like metal/blood/lightning bending for the other elements

9 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

Flying without the aid of a glider was the off shoot.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, there was the whole flying thing that the anarchist achieved in LoK by being empty on the inside/letting go of everything.

9 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

I would go so far as to argue that aang came up with a slight offshoot in creating those little sustained air balls

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Well, have you heard of Guru Laghima?

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

they do have an off shoot, kind of.. Remember the anarchist in Legend of Korra who can fly?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

What about Aang's grandson's fart technique. That's pretty hybrid.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Fire = lightning. Earth = metal. Water = blood/healing? Air = flight.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Earth also has lavabending and fire can fly as well.

That comment was 3 years old bud

And also no, Jinora is able to do it and she's just a regular air bender.
