They built tunnels in the ground that took in outside air, were cooled by ground temps, and vented inside (by convection). Natural AC.

Actually for heating it wouldn't be too bad, the well off had heated floors/walls using heated air/smoke, they would build the floor 1/

raised and the walls hollow with a fireplace in the foundation on the outside and the exit hole on the far side so using the chimney 2/

effect the warm air would flow under the floor through the wall warming both up on it's way out. 3/3

The system they used required many slaves to maintain the fire and clean he house. Maybe in a more tropical climate this would work.
