As someone with virtually no social media presence, it’s rough.

To all my fellow game devs out there, don’t be like me. Start building a community early on. Don’t wait. There’s no point in making the perfect game if nobody knows it exists.

*EDIT: Wow, thanks for all the support everyone! I had just wanted to vent some frustration, and seeing all these comments is really helping!

I see a few people asking why I didn't share a link, and it's because Imgurians usually don't love self promo.
(PS: someone in the comments was somehow able to figure it out anyways)

But hey! At least the soul-crushing isn't from a publisher who refuses to let you make the game how you want.

If it's any help, the portraits are super cute <3

Your game looks really cute!

There’s a UK based magazine called Debug that showcases indie games (it’s not just limited to UK devs). They publish every three months (print and digital) and also do events and conventions. Might be worth getting in touch with them and see if they can help promote. https://www.teamdebug.com/

Make sure to post about it in some gaming subreddits. it doesnt take long and can reach a lot of people.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Especially on here, where where the terminally online downvote anything like that and bitch that they're ads. But fuck them. They've got nothing to show for their lives and that's why they're bitter

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Edit this to link to the steam page.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Well you didn't strip the UI out from the videos/screenshots on your Steam store page, so as far as marketing ability goes you're way above average.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It's interesting how some promotions for indie games get crushed here and others pass with flying colors

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I'd call it a shame.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Love me some witchy vibes! Wishlisted and can’t wait to try it out!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You completed a game AND released it. There may be a ton of games out there, but you are statistically among the few. Be proud of all you have learned, and your awesome achievement.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Little bit of work on your part, but I can help with promotion. If you can export your demo to WebGL/HTML5 type format, I'd be happy to showcase it on the Armor Games website. Send me an email to mygame [at] armorgames (dot) com if that interests you. Congrats on the game!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Saw it on reddit, joined the discord. Keep up the good work!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I'm in the exact same boat. I love game development but hate marketing the stuff I make. Even if I post it to a place that is totally fine with self promotion it feels extremely sleazy somehow.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

When I started my company, I co-founded it with a marketing guy. He knows that world and is comfortable with it, and we've discussed how to do it ethically, so we're both happy.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm a small streamer but I'll stream the demo !

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Thanks!! I’d love to watch!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fuck whatever anyone else thinks. Just promote it. Just own it and say its a promotion if something you did. People get annoyed when someone creates an imgur account and only uses it for advertising. You're clearly part of the community.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You sure? they only comment on their own self-promotion posts, which are their only posts

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah look at their favourites. Loads from years ago.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

As someone who is starting their journey on writing their own game, it's this that scares the crap out of me. Good luck with your game!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A buddy and I are working on our own game too, we'll definitely have to start a discord and to self promote when we have a bit of gameplay to show.

Good luci @OP

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just don’t be like that one asshole on here who reposts a bunch of front page content, then edits the posts after they go viral to put an ad at the end

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

"One"?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One prominent one anyway. And he’s blatant about it but if you call him out, he’ll block you.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah that's part of the reason why I like working for a large company. All I have to do is program and not deal with any of the business side. Just wish it didn't feel like I was playing layoff roulette...

this reads alot like "how do I create an ad on imgur without making it obvious".

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 21

Hi, I'm doing a study to find out why some people here will call promoting a video game an ad, but promoting any other type of art is not. Given your comment history of only going after video game promotion but never any other type of art promotion, I thought you would be the person to ask. Why is promoting any type of artform except video games acceptable?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

You know developers are human, too, right? And we sometimes want to vent to the world about our frustrations, just like everybody else.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 6

Sounds like your a creator in search of a publisher. Choose wisely friend.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you had put the name of it in the post comments it would be a lot easier

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 11

And every shitty piece of shit here would cry to the heavens that its just an ad. Ive seen so many posts by game devs sharing that get torn to shreads in the comments, im not surprised they didnt link anything, this community is insanely toxic to indie game devs.

2 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 5

Yeah, if I see an imgurian who’s like “hey guys, I made this” I’m happy for them, and I think it’s neat….. if they’re making an ad, the joke is on them, I haven’t bought a video game since 2011.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Still playing Skyrim?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Promoting anything you've put your heart into tends to be soul crushing in my experience.

2 years ago | Likes 124 Dislikes 5

I think advertising in general is just an awful experience.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Each wrinkle is a labour of love

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just started a business and I have no idea how to market myself. It really is terrible

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Feeling the same way, but my business is extremely local only

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thor would believe in you

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

haha funnily enough, one of my characters is named after Thor! He's a big inspiration.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Good luck out there, I was able to find it, its called Cauldron https://store.steampowered.com/app/2619650/Cauldron/ I'll try out the demo, not sure if its the right fit for me, but looks cute

2 years ago | Likes 298 Dislikes 36

Damn, That's a cute witch girl..

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Added it to my steam wishlist. For those that are unfamiliar, even if you don't buy a game, adding it to your steam wishlist (which is free) advances it in the steam algorithm. With enough wishlists in a certain time period, it will start showing up in recommended and even a front page rotation for users that have never seen it or wishlisted it. So get that algorithm rolling if you want to support creators but don't have the money to buy. Even if the game isn't a good fit for you, you can help

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Oh look he put Glenn the frog knight in there

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Looks cute, bookmarking for later

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If this is their game, I'll snag it. It's definitely is up my alley and that curly haired knight is *chefs kiss*

2 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 6

Good call. I'll play the demo as well (when I get home tonight) but, like you, this isn't exactly my type of game.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I saw that before. It is just a ad. You paid this guy to post the link in the comments. ^^

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

My comment exemplified

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yea right :p look at my post history. I'm trying to support a creative person who may be struggling. I prefer memes and gifs, but gaming is been my life since the dark ages of Atari and smokey arcades. I'm an introvert and avoid face to face human contact. I despise puting my self out there so I empathize with OP a lot.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Thanks for the share! Just spent over an hour getting lost in the mini games. So far so cute, easy to learn, and engaging. Now, tbf, this is all coming from a gaming newb. I can count on one hand the number of games I've put more than a few hours into, so it surprised me how captivating it was from the start. Not too much reading. Beginner friendly. MUCH potential to do something great here (人*´∀`)。*゚+

Idk why u got downvoted but I brought you back up to 1 lol 😆

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I think there are some dv fairies in the comments. Saw quite a few 0s, much more than usual for neutral/positive comments too. Thanks for the +1! We stick together!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Wow! Not sure how you found it, but good sleuthing! And thanks for taking a look at the demo!

2 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 6

I added to my wishlist.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Looks fun! Wishlisted here as well. ^_^

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

if you google PeterRegg it comes right up as your developer name is the same

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

like @CorpseStarch said; clicked on your post history, saw you had a book under your your name which = your user name. googled your name + game dev and the second link was your game. I saw it hand't released on steam so I assumed it was the game you were talking about :)

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Wishlisted

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

You're developer name is the same as your imgur name, That's how.

2 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

How the fuck did you manage to do 1 right and 1 wrong?

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Text to speech, I also can't read English too well so I don't know all the stupid

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Since you didn’t even post a link to it, you still suck promoting it.

2 years ago | Likes 80 Dislikes 35

On imgur that would get you downvoted to hell and guess what, you'd still suck at promoting it

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Damned if you do damned If you don't.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

LMAO

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Either the imgur algorithm hates game links, or the powers-that-be do. Don't blame OP for pandering to the hidden rules.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And every shitbhead here would be bitching and moaning about it being an ad.

2 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 2

Exactly! Lord fobid people swipe their finger 2cm to go to the next post. They act like it's a 2 minute Youtube Ad.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well every normal individual

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I think it's fair to bitch about, it's gotten well out of hand. Accounts with no previous activity show up and go down the checklist: quit my job, risked everything, made this game, go look at it. It's tiresome, even if it's true.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

hello yes i am the shitbhead

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

Hi nice to meet youe

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What up 💩🍞

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In fairness, a lot of people on Imgur dislike self-promotion of things like this, because they feel it smacks of commercial advertising, so I suspect that's why they didn't link it directly here.

2 years ago | Likes 114 Dislikes 2

Those people only dislkie self-promoting video games. Literally any other monetisable artform they are fine with.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Maybe yeah. They did have an imgur post for the demo a week ago but they seemed to have removed it (I still had the tab open on a browser but it now 404s). Checking Steam the game isn't actually out right this second so I guess this is just actual venting to calm the nerves rather than some subtle promoting and they'll do another post later? But they attracted a bit of the wrong attention anyway, RIP lol.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Which is pretty unfortunate. We as a community are pretty "pro-people" and want to see them succeed at what they're good at and passionate about. Yet, when a single person does that and says, "I'm making a game to... You know... Sell and have people play" they get smashed.

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 3

Which is wild to me because you never see any of that whenever someone promotes their creations on etsy or posts links to their webcomics.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I never understood that. Surely imgur should be in favor of indie developers promoting their work. Not like Ubisoft posts here.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

I came across another post from a game dev who didn't like the launch process and someone had commented a link to the game. Everyone else was commenting that it was basically the same Dev commenting from an alt account and it was all just a poorly disguised ad.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I see etsy ads and book promotions all the time on imgur, and everyone claps. People only say "ad" if it's a video game.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Maybe on some level people don't understand that you can develop a videogame in the same hand-crafted DIY way as things typically sold on etsy or self-published stuff. I never had a problem with those kinds of ad posts, I just go to the next post unless it's interesting. But the disingenuous ones are kind of annoying. I would never buy anything that looks fishy like that, I wouldn't trust the vendor at all.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

People of Imgur are a goddamn contradiction. Let the man post his work! He ain't some mega Corp triple A multi billion dollar marketing ploy. Let him show off his personal hard work!

2 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 8

People here are really hating on indie developers as well..

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's a hard balance, there's a hell of a lot of developers running patreon type scams, posting asset flip shovelware games and/or endlessly pushing one game they haven't actually been working on for a literal decade.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I think most people here draw a distinction between someone's personal account where they also post the things they are working on, and an account made solely to promote their game.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

which... is weird?

I am also working on a game and I plan to create a new account when I'll be ready to promote my game. I make a point to separate my real/professional life to my dumb meme browsing and comment making online life.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It's not that weird imo. Imgur has avenues for people to advertise on the platform. Creating an account for free to advertise your product is, I believe, breaking TOS.
