Only a small handful of the stories I have from my time at a pet store.

The store I worked in was a small, local pet chain, not Petco or Petsmart or anything like that. I would absolutely never work in one of those hellholes.

...Yes. Yes you do. Story here is the guy bought a domestic, indoor kitten from the humane society and wanted to be a barn cat, for hunting mice and insects in the barn. I had him pull out his adoption contract for me and I politely pointed to the care information stating if he didn't care for the cat properly he could indeed have the cat taken away, be charged a hefty fine, and be blacklisted from any other shelters in the area. I also informed him that there was a different shelter a couple of miles away that adopted out specifically feral cats and barn cats for the exact purpose he wanted to adopt a cat and he probably should have gone there.

I don't think we ever caught these people, but they never came back either. We noticed something was up when they were just walking around the store with a perfectly quiet, covered baby stroller. Now this is a pet store full of animals. There are no such thing as quiet children in that store. After they left one of the stockers checked out the rabbit cages where they were lingering and they had stolen two $25 rabbits. They weren't purebred or anything but they were up for adoption and we did not sell rabbits to people who didn't cave cages/food/literally everything you need for a setup. So I'm guessing they didn't like that and decided to take them instead. Wherever those little buns are, I hope they're okay.

So we thought "okay, maybe he's got someone else picking up the cat." We all watched in absolute horror from the inside of the store as this massive jackwagon opens the cargo compartment on the back of his bike, sets the cat inside, and drives off before anyone can stop him. I probably have dozens of adoption applicant and pickup horror stories, so if I do a part two at some point I'll definitely include more. This fucking pool of douche was probably the worst one though.

We had three brand new shelter cats who had JUST been picked up, vaccinated, and fixed. They were all absolutely terrified, being in a new environment and being abandoned pretty much feral cats. I had been explaining to people all day to please keep their dogs away from the obviously hissing/yowling/stressed cats because they had just received surgery. This lady just would not listen and one of the smaller cats ended up popping her stitches from screaming and hissing and batting the kennel, and she had to be sent back to the pet hospital for a day for new stitched and a day's rest. I hate dog owners sometimes.

To which I responded with "Have you ever been in a car with a cat?" before I could stop myself. They had never owned a cat before and I explained to them the bouncing ball of claws and anxiety a cat becomes in a moving car. They declined buying a cat carrier but ended up coming back into the store later clawed to absolute shit, to inform me that I was, indeed, correct.

Don't worry, the raccoon was fine and was later rehabilitated back into the wild. This is honestly one of my favorite stories. She needed formula for the baby raccoon, and we ended up doing some research for/with her to find out the best options. She came back pretty frequently for formula and soft cat food, and once an older customer even bought every single can we had left on the shelf for the girl so she didn't have to spend her whole check on the pricey formula. I even bought one for her myself once or twice. The whole time she was in the store every time she let me watch the raccoon, so I got to help customers with a chill baby raccoon hanging out on my shoulder.

This was one of the best examples I've ever gotten to show. A couple was asking if a bunny would be okay for their five extremely rowdy, extremely loud, very young children. As I'm in the middle of saying "well we trim their nails pretty frequently, but the problem with rabbits and young children is they're extremely skittish and their claws are still very sharp". Just then their youngest shrieks about as loud as she can, spooking the rabbit and I end up covered in blood in front of the whole family. I was pretty calm throughout the whole situation, because I've had it happen plenty of times before, but they all looked pretty shocked. They ended up going home with a nice, safe gerbil instead.

No no no no no no no no no no no

Animals are living creatures, not fun party favors. Please don't ever do this ever. Especially don't just push a living animal that requires money, time, care, and upkeep on people you barely know. Manager ended up forcing us to do the sale anyway. I personally refused to make the sale myself and had someone else ring her up. We sent her home with fifteen separate care sheets and explained to her that everyone she was giving these to was going to be responsible for fish tanks/food/etc. Ugh.

This was one of the busiest weeks we had. We sold out of aquarium salt and fish medication and goldfish flakes VERY quickly. Almost every single fish that came in had fin rot/ammonia poisoning/some other kind of issue. Most of the fish ended up surviving, luckily, because the parents were smart enough to listen to our advice and actually spend money on the larger tanks and the medications for their sick, dying fish. They weren't too happy when we told them just how big those fish get, though.

Chirp. Chirp. Chirp. Chirp. Chirp.

Most of the time we could grab the cricket quickly enough and toss it back into the bin. Sometimes we wouldn't notice or a customer would decide to help themselves in the cricket bin (please don't ever do this, even if you are an experienced reptile handler. Please just let the employees do it for you.).

The worst one though was when one got out and got trapped under a shelf. A stocker and I finally decided we had had quite enough insanity after three days and ended up tearing shelves apart looking for the little bastard. We eventually found it by blowing into the cracks of the shelves and kicking at the base and listening for when it stopped chirping. We ended up putting the little bug out of its misery because we weren't supposed to throw them back in the bin after that much time out in the open.

I celebrated with pizza for lunch.

This didn't really bother me at all, because I'm a reptile handler. So I was fine with it. But after about twenty minutes and a couple of horrified expressions I realized I was handling giant mealworms at the (closed) backup register right in front of terrified customers. It was actually pretty funny, but in hindsight I probably should have brought the bin in the back to work on them. I ended up having to stay up front though, because we were busy and I had to help quite a few customers in between worm wrangling.

This happened more than once.

The absolute worst brands I ever got asked about were Purina, Rachel Ray (seriously what the fuck) and some weird off brand that Family Dollar sold. We pretty much only sold "premium" brands of dog food. IE, the food that won't fucking kill your dogs when they eat it. The only super basic brands we sold were Some kind of special dietary blend of Purina, Blue, and Eukanuba. Most of what we sold was Fromm, Holistic Select, and Taste of the Wild. And pretty much any other similar brand that didn't suck major ass.
If you need recommendations on cat/dog food I'm your guy ;)

I beg your pardon?

Damn near every breed of dog, cat, snake, lizard, rabbit, hamster, a chinchilla once, some rats, couple mice, and even a fish once.

Cat tax: This is Godric. We adopted him as a tiny dumb kitten and now he's a big dumb adult.

I may do more work stories later on if people want to see more of them. I have plenty more from this pet store, as well as a bunch of weird crazy happenings from when I worked at a Gas Station, manager in a pizza place, and a few other work places.

Consider donating to Muskegon Humane Society, Harbor Humane Society, Michele's Rescue, or Carol's Ferals if you live in the West Michigan/Lakeshore area, or donate to your local shelter. Shelters are always in need of funds to help animals, carriers, blankets, pet food, and towels. Thanks :)

***EDIT***
Good lord, thank you for all of the attention. Really, I appreciate your questions, and I love answering them.

Daughter won a goldfish at a carnival for "free". After buying a tank, chemicals, etc. it's now my fish since she forgets we have it.. kids.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Erm, how on Earth did you get bitten by a fish?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Finger in bowl to make sure the change of water was the same temp as the bowl water.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Forgot the fish was, indeed, still in the bowl.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Feels like you have a preference for cats over dogs

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I love both but some dog owners are just horrible in my town. I also own cats because my fiance and I just don't have enough free time 1/

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

money, or space for dogs with how much we work.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You do know they ate those rabbits, don't you?

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Why do you think that?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fucking probably.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Sometimes I walk into pet stores when all the cats for adoption are out, buy some catnip, go visit with the adoption people (1)

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Some local pet stores have catnip behind the counter. Mine did and they still do, and if you're a regular you can ask to give them some!

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Drug all the cats into being happier for prospective owners, then donate the rest to the adoption people to keep dosing them.

Abandoned, often maimed, recovering from injury, terrified cats by the dozens without a home - you think that's their actual personality?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We also had people donate us treats, but most stores can just write off stock for that. It's definitely better to give it to a shelter.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Why weren't you supposed to throw it back in the bin just because it had been outside of it for a few days?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Possible contamination, in case it had come into contact with any weird bacteria or anything while roaming on the floor.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bitten by a fish... the fuck did you do?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@OP found this list for cat foods. What's your opinion? http://www.reviews.com/cat-food/

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They're all pretty good brands. Most of them are regional, though, and are harder to find in small towns/certain states.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the recommendation, we're currently using purina naturals wet food, but once that runs out, we're probably going with evolve.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fed my puppy Orijen, against breeder recommendation. Now she is apparently undesirably too large (not fat) for showing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Orijen is a fantastic food tbh

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

How come she had a baby racoon?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some of the people in town will just shoot raccoons/run them over when they see them. Makes for a lot of orphaned baby raccoons.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

WTF, WHY?! Running them over on purpose must be illegal, no?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't think so. Even if it was, there would be no way to prove that.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have been feeding my cats Purina indoor immune health cat food and my dog pedigree complete nutrition dog food. Are these acceptable (1)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Foodstuffs? Do you have any recommendations for litter as well? (2)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

BOY DO I, I could talk about cat litter for hours. Don't judge me. My personal favorites for food brands are I and Love and You, Fromm, 1/

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Holistic Select, and Lifetime. Mostly for their affordability to nutrition ratio. As far as litter goes, my absolute favorites are 2/

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

World's Best Cat Litter (no really), SmartCat(It smells like GRASS!), and Probiotic Litter.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So I am completely horrified I bought my cat some Rachel ray food thinking it would be good for her! Can you recommend me a brand for her?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Natural Balance is great for cats, with similar ingredients, just wayyy better quality and standards.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you so much! I've also been buying supplemental vital grain free soft food, is that good stuff too? I like to spoil her with soft food

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've never heard of that one actually, might be regional. I like EVO soft food, BFF, and Tiki Cat. Lotus is awesome too.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've been feeding my fog the Rachel ray brand. Thanks for letting me know I need to stop!!!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Glad I could help friend, that shit is garbage.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Probably worse than Purina tbh

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Why is it garbage? (I genuinely don't know)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Very little nutrients, high in preservatives and artificial flavor/color/fillers that do nothing.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Looks decent enough to me? https://nutrish.com/dog/dry-food/zero-grain-beef-and-bison

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Rachel Ray dog food is not very good tbh, it looks great, but it's really not. Try Blue Wilderness for a similar price point but higher 1/

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is there any shih tzu stories like the picture?

9 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

I had a lot of shih tzus in the store, and there are at least a dozen or so stories surrounding just that breed. So yeah. Maybe part two.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 2

Pls

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Part two has TWO shih tzu bits, just for you

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I own a shih tau that's why and they're the best

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

They're pretty damn adorable

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ok, Dog food for a dobie and German shep, cat for for the asshole my roommate has, and the cool feral mouser, please? Thank you.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

FWIW...I feed my rescue pitty and 2 shelter cats Fromm only. You might have to try a few flavors to find what they like.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I feed my cat Pure Natural brand dry food and various wet foods that have no sugar, grains or other useless crap.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dobie and german shep would be better off eating biologically appropriate food, meaning food that's close to the original bio diet 1/

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

of wild dogs and shit. Probably Canagan if you have the money, if not, the cheap version would be Blue Wilderness or Taste of the Wild. 2/

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

As for the cats, EVO would be the best for the mouser but it's stupid pricey. Alternatively both cats can eat a grain free high protein 3/

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

Natural food like I and Love and You (it's what I use for my 2 year old and my 10 year old feral), Natural Balance, or even 4/

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Holistic Select. Alternatively you can also feed the mouser raw, Stella and Chewy's (it's in the photo actually) is awesome, and so is 5/

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Or try FROMM - no recalls, high quality food and lots of variety.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

not all Purina food is bad but a lot are. For example, Essential Care (cats) is recommendable, we sell it at our clinic.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I love you person - high quality food goes SUCH a long way. I can't stand that people are feeding their animals Purina.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Thank you friend.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't understand the hatred toward Purina. It's the only one of any of the dog foods you listed that has been laboratory tested. 1/

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And Purina has done some quality research, most notably the 14 year "Life Span" study that proved dietary restriction prolongs canine life 2

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Purina is a perfectly good brand as long as you aren't buying the chow kinds. The smart blend and Purina one are perfectly fine

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Don't like that you shit on Petsmart and Petco. They aren't perfect but Petsmart would have denied the Betta sale....

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I did try but our manager happened to know her personally and pretty much forced us :( Small town bullshit.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Did you have any store policy to prohibit sales to obviously bad homes or did you just have to make the best of a bad situation?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Also, great work stories post!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank u frend

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Actually, yes. The store does have the right to refuse service to shitty people, and any potentially abusive owners (I might cover some 1/

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Why didn't the manager force the sale of the bettas them?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Long story short, he knew the lady personally, didn't want to lose her business, and he didn't care about fish as much as the other animals.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What a dickwad.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

of those in another post), and the humane societies also call the employee involved in the app process to ask questions about the owner. 2/

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

So we actually had influence in the adoption process as well. 3/3

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The bad stories are why you have to be a certified animal caretaker assistant here in Denmark, to work at a pet store.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

The requirements for being a sales associate at my store were pretty high. no licensing or anything but definitely had to know your stuff.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

[1] I think it comes down to ethics actually. Would I ever sell a pet to someone who hasn't done their homework and knows EVERYTHING about

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

[2] the pet that they're getting. I would not. My interest in the animals wellbeing is worth more than a sale.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Definitely. We only had to refuse a sale a couple of times, luckily. Most people took our advice and did pretty well.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Glad to hear it! :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The employees over at the big box pet stores probably have way more horror stories than I do.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

We've got a Pibble with allergies and he's on prescription Royal Canin. We didn't like the Purina one as he always seemed hungry.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Purina is garbo for nutrients, especially for pits.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Try a prey model raw diet, it's a lot of research but it's amazing for allergies. http://rawlearning.com/wp/

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We give our Rottie a Costco brand with freeze dried raw nuggets added in. She's going through chemo and that's the only she'll eat.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I work at a rescue center as well. Oh boy, do I have stories I can add to yours, haha.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Hey if you want to message me some of them I can do a separate post with other people's animal stories.

If I get enough I'll do an entirely separate one with just other people's contributions.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

i'd be interested in reading through that.

Working on it now. Not sure if I should wait a few days to post or just go for it. I usually only post like once a year, so
