I went to visit a loved ones gave site and I was shocked by how poorly this place was maintained

The grass wasn't cut

Tombstones were knocked over there was trash everywhere

How could people just be careless. I felt like I had to do something

So I went home grabbed some caulk and a lawn mower

And just started cleaning this place up. I didn't know a lot of these people that were buried but o figured their living family members would appreciate it.

I never really knew how heavy tombstones were

But I felt like it was the right thing to do.

One of the final ones that I finished caulking

And this is my uncles grave site.

Dog tax! Send me cool Things? So apprently i made it to most viral! This is really cool! Do i ask for titties or something?

Someone is abusing township (?) funds. You're a good person @Op. Well done.

Better than a first world grave digger.

Our local council pushed at gravestones until they fell over as this was a sign that they were a safety hazard. Zero respect

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Supposedly a special force measuring gauge is used but normally the biggest beefiest council suffices

Is this outside Waldo, Wisconsin? I had the same thought, but my back is messed up from my time in the military. Blessings upon you.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No where near Wisconsin and thank you for your service in the military!

Your uncle would be proud.

You're a good person. I hope your kindness comes back to you 10 fold.

+1 for having a good reason to give UVBNAXED a +1.

Plot twist: Cemetery for assholes whose family hated them. Family kicked the stones over.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The Chinese do this twice a year https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qingming_Festival You should see it. Twice a year, cemeteries blossom.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Not to lessen the deed but.... You went home and grabbed your caulk eh?

9 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 6

The last time I grabbed my caulk and went to the cemetery, I was arrested

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

He sprayed some white goo on people's gravestones too.....I'll see myself out.

I dont get this cult around neat and tidy graves in our society. ever seen an old jewish one? they dont tend to the graves. its beautiful

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Kudos to you for doing something to help others! It's appreciated.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

in my hometown due to the trash accumulation they had to put locks on the gates...also because people were dying to get in

Fair play to you. I'm always amazed at how conservative American graveyards are though. So plain. Irish graves do be covered in mad things.

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Really depends on the region and the age or how know they were. But yeah in general pretty plain. New Orleans probably has the best

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

When I was a kid my cousin died in a fire. My brother and I would decorate his grave with toys and flowers and people would just let 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

their kids take the toys. I've also seen people take flowers from other graves and put them on the site of their "loved ones". Add those 2/3

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

to the fact that dying flowers and such are removed by groundskeepers, and that explains why they're so bland. 3/3

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I can't begin to compute how fucked it is that they let their kids do that. What the actual hell.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Some asshole kicked those over. What is wrong with some people's kids?!?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Someone else said they thought water and freeze thaw cycles loosen them and over time just fall down. But vandalism does happen

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Saw a small cemetery in VA where someone(s) had broken every single confederate grave marker. That's fucked up

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Agreed.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Setting compound uses a vacuum seal to secure the die to the base. Water eventually gets in and works it loose over time.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Stonemason here. These should have been fixed originally with stainless steel dowels/fixings, no wonder they all were knocked over!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Alright gay

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Doesnt the city own the gravesite? Couldnt you get them to take care of it more? I do think you did a good thing but how long does it last?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You are awesome, but 1upvote can't encompass my gratitude. I hope to favorite to NOT forget and carry on. Not via repost but via OC someday.

I've seen the same thing where my father is buried (small TX town) and would feel proud to do the same in my next visit.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Good work!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think your uncle would be proud of you

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

yo check the bylaws (funeral director here). At least in Ontario the cemeteries act only allows a broken stone to be layed down flat,

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

reset on its base or have temporary repairs done. Good intentions but make sure its all proper

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Looks like all they did was reset but this is still good advice.

Plot twist. The order of images is reversed

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

so, his dog died, they buried him, he got angry and wrecked havoc on other tomb stones?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't forget summoning a druid to make the grass grow quickly.

Me too

As someone who has sat and pulled weeds around random old headstones, you did a lot more work there than I have. Nicely done!

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Thank you! I have a lot more work to do once winter is over

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

2 that were completely overgrown. :)

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm glad you plan to do more! I'll admit part of my motivation was living in an apartment with no yard, but it was fun finding headstones

That's idiotic and only speaks about religious beliefs. It implies non-supernatural thinking people are merciless.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 44

It doesn't do that at all! You're saying that no reasonable atheist would bother to respect and care for the dead? That's absolutely false.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I'm completely atheist and still believe taking care of a grave is keeping a promise you made to someone.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 2

As an atheist do you have any expectations on what is to be done with your body?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 5

I want to be turned into a tree.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have no plans yet. Whatever comforts my loved ones, really.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

could donate it to science... or ask to be stuffed and brought out every Halloween to scare people... maybe even around xmas...or valentines

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

So your suggesting only religious people respect the dead? wut

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Respecting rotting corpses is religious. It requires belief in souls, after lives, etc. to make any sense.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have to strongly disagree with you on that

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't get why many want corpses to have more rights than living people; abortion rights versus organ donations.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Will caulk really hold a heavy stone like that in place? I would have thought you'd need to drill holes for rebar or something.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

Could the caulk trap moisture between the stones? What was originally used? Would mortar be a better choice?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Liquid nails would work as long as you don't smash into it with a riding lawnmower. But yeah the caulk threw me off too.

Tru dat. I was saying liquid nails because it's easier on the fly. Op obviously already has a caulk gun.
