Hello all! A while back, I posted the news that I got a job on the APL Korea, a container ship going between the US and Asia. https://imgur.com/gallery/8hhLv Well, I've been aboard for about a month now (Out of the four months I'm signed on for) And thought I'd post an update. I took this pic on my first day, when the shuttle dropped me and my bags off at the ship in LA.

My room. That TV's hooked up to a server with a whole bunch of movies and TV shows. This ship actually has internet too, which is unusual for me. It's crazy slow though, almost to the point of being unusable. I'm currently in Qingdao China, and this is the first time in a while that I've been able to get on Imgur.

Leaving LA. I can almost see my apartment from there.

Our first stop was Oakland for a day or so. I was on bow lookout as we were leaving.

On the way to Dutch Harbor Alaska! It was getting colder by the hour.

Made it ashore in Dutch. It's muddy and desolate, but also super pretty. I proceeded to get wasted!

The next day we left. It snowed.

Heading to Asia! Out first stop, Yokohama Japan.

The schedule gods blessed me this trip, and I got to go ashore in Yokohama too!

Sign on a trash can. So adorable!

I forgot to take a before picture. Me and my buddy went into a little local restaurant/bar. Nobody spoke English, but we were able to communicate enough to ask for a bunch of their best food. It was a great time!

Wandered around some more, and wound up at the SkyLounge at the top of the Yokohama Landmark Tower. Pretty sure this place was just, stupid expensive, but by that time we were sorta beyond caring. The view was amazing.

This was about a week ago, we've since been to Busan S. Korea, Okinawa, and here, Qingdao. I haven't really had a chance to get off the ship since then though, and right now we're socked in with fog, waiting to sail to Shanghai. Then, it's back to Busan, then back home to LA before doing it all over again.

Red Panda tax! From the Yokohama Zoo.

Edit: Wow! You guys rule! I had to go to sleep right after posting this, then wake up and sail. We're currently heading down the river, leaving Qingdao. I've got an hour or so to kill before watch, so I'll try to respond to some of you. For everyone asking how to get into the industry, I talked about that on my last post, which I linked to up there. Also, a lot of people are asking about the money, and it really varies. Starting out, I was lucky to make $3-4,000 a month. Now, depending on how generous they are with the overtime, I'll take home maybe $8-10,000 a month? I usually only work 4-5 months a year though, so it's not like I'm rolling in cash. I keep my bills down, have some fun adventures in my off time, and save a little, it's a good living.
Anyway, feel free to DM me, I'll try to keep the updates coming every few weeks or so, and, um, send nudes?

Cool! Even though on the map it looks like Dutch Harbor was a detour, it's actually pretty close to the straight line between CA and Japan

Keep ‘em coming man, it’s a neat look into a life I’ll likely never get a chance to lead

And +1 for the username

Pro Tip: You can use Google Translate on your phone if the restaurant staff doesn't speak English. It might not be perfect, but it helps!

Yeah, that's what we did, eventually.

So regardless of the job, is it fun to be on a ship like that or you'd prefer to stay on land?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's hard work and there's very little sleep, but it's a cool experience. My favorite part is all the time off though, honestly.

Muddy and desolate also describes the people of Dutch Harbor, AK

Hah! It's true.

What's the work like? Working 4-5 months a year and having 7-8 months off doesn't sound bad at all.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's tough. 12+ hour days, seven days a week. But sometimes it's fairly laid back. The time off is what it's all about though.

I was waiting for this

I thought it was for incinerating trash to make electricity and cogenerated district heating.

Well sure, if you want to be sensible and realistic about it. This, however, is Imgur.

Totally something I would have done when I was younger. Oh missed opportunities.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I would love to see more of these. This is genuinely interesting

Bad things happen to boats whose people get wasted leaving Alaska.

8 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 0

Haha, we didn't leave til the next afternoon, I had plenty of time to recover.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Not to mention how tough work and rough seas compound a hangover.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You sir, are not wrong.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It was the Bay of Biscay that taught me this after a heavy run ashore in Lisbon. All hands, feet and knees on deck ejecting all food and beer

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Be kind to your agent! They are your link to shore :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

what si the average travel time between Japan (or whichever Asian country you visit most) and the US?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, when we leave Busan to head back to LA, it's roughly 12 days. The whole round trip is 42.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Someone may have said it already, but get a good look at Busan. They filmed a sequence from Black Panther there.

I've been told seafarers make fuck all for a living. That's why most are from the third world. Source: I work at a container dock.

This is true of the foreign flagged ships. American ships are a whole different thing. Especially companies that hire the right unions.

Norwegian rat saloon in Dutch Harbor?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is like being in the U. S NAVY but without allbthe bullshit and more ports!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've heard that if you light a cigarette with a candle, a seaman dies...

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That’s true. And women on ship are bad luck.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you point at the horizon spread your fingers wide, or else the bad luck will be focused onto one finger and sink the ship.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I LOVE CONTAINER SHIPS!!! seriously, my wife mocks me because I love to watch container ships in port.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Which port? If I'm ever there, I'll wave to you lol.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Used to live in Long Beach, but I recently moved to Michigan, so my container ship watching has taken a hit :(

"Maekju chusaeyo." That's to order beer in Korea. The Frypan is a chain in Korea with chicken and potato chips that are fucking bananas.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I recommend avoiding Lotteria in Korea. Their food often gave me the runs.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@op what’s a good way to break into this industry. I’d love to work at sea

I think if I'm ever not in a relationship again, I'd like a job like this

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dude, this is the first time I've not been in one while on a ship. It's weird not having anyone to talk to. At least there's always imgur!

Whats the difference between seaman and sailor?

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Technically, to be a sailor, doesn't your ship have to have... sails?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Where you put it.

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

I don't know, but their both pretty salty

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

How do I get into the field? I really want to go on a container ship, and this post has inspired me even more...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How easy/difficult would it be to be a stowaway on something like a container ship?

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Depends if you want to make it alive to the destination. If not, it's hella easy.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You know, I actually spend a lot of time thinking about that. It'd be moderately hard. If just for food and poop reasons.
