Accountant Elina Mäkinen from Finland has a passion for swimming… in freezing cold water, beneath the ice of frozen lakes. Using an ax, May carves her own freezing ice pools to swim in, calmly plunging into the below-freezing temperatures of Laponia. She’s even competed in the World Ice Swimming Championship.

I’m a cold water swimmer, not ice though and the high is unbelievable. Hurts like a bastard though.

She seems ice.

This Black Crab sequel looks weird.

I read the description in Werner Herzog's voice. Very satisfying.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Firmly believe some folk are physically geared for this stuff. Did it once, I was ok. Cold, but ok. Some far tougher lads couldn't hack it.

Perkele! Torille!

The real deal is being in a sauna, getting really hot, and then going straight out and jumping in. Going from 70 - 80 degree air to

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

freezing water is a serious rush.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It’s cool that she does this very brave and powerful butt all benefits are not scientifically proven just observations

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I’ve done this and swimming is so difficult I’m amazed she can casually swim like that

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

WHAT?Every day! I planned to get hole done for the swim, but might be the covid or just my laziness, but I didn’t get the hole done. 1/2

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Might do it tomorrow, but I might go for ice swimming about 30 times in winter ? even though it’s possible at my house.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’m in love

Fine line between bravery and insanity.

4 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

More like... FINN line....

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Courage is knowing it might hurt, and doing it anyway. Stupidity is the same. That’s why life is hard.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

She doesn’t have to worry about whoosh! … Smol peener

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a Finn myself, if you time it right you actually feel quite nice and warm after getting out of the water

4 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Ah, yes, late-stage hypothermia.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you're not in the water too long it just triggers your surface level circulation to really kick in giving a temporary sensation of warmth

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're as cold as ice! You're willing to sacrifice our love!

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Don't know about sacrificing your love. But if you cross her, you will never be found!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One time I got in the shower before the water got hot.

"... and sometimes i might be shivering for 45 minutes - it's a lot of fun" - fucking fins are tough as nails :D

4 years ago | Likes 92 Dislikes 0

I've never shivered even when my body temp once dropped to 96.2. I'd probably die very quickly just standing there. lol

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There's not much to do so shivering counts as a hobby in Finland.

4 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

Nails aspire to be as tough as Finns.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

She did say she's a bit of a masochist. I'm inclined to agree with her.

This is one of the best unintentional generic anime cosplays I’ve seen. Just walk through the woods with a pack and massive blade. I love it

4 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

This!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Plus bikini

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

And a massive, massive, ... oh no, never mind, that wasn't anime.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What else is there to do in Finland?

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Drink and get depression. But apparently we are happiest country in the planet..

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Maybe we are so happy coz we drink so much

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Must be that

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

could be that there’s an underlying chronic pain type condition that’s alleviated by the oxytocin, adrenaline & dopamine she gets doing this

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Could be, but also ice swimming is not that crazy as it seems

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Everyday?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sure

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The ice is always cold

4 years ago | Likes 240 Dislikes 0

She doesn’t have to worry about whoosh! … Smol peener

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

She means colder than the water.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Science approved.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What about icy-hot?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Technically that is a thing though if you ever found yourself near it you have much bigger issues to deal with. As it's ice formed by ->

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

huge amounts of pressure to phase shift water from liquid into solid regardless of temperature. One of the only ways we think this can ->

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

happen is in massive gravity wells like a planets core kind of thing. Where the gravity supplies the pressure force needed to do it. ->

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So as I said if you find the hot ice you have found your self in a really bad situation.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

TIL.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I prefer leftover ice cold. It's not the same when you warm it up in the microwave

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bathing in sub-zero water is… well, a rush!

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

*barely above zero

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Saltwater.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sub-zero water is called ICE and you really, really can't swim in it.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Try saltwater!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As long as it flows it stays liquid.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Russian Army: We're getting frost bite! Finland: We like ice swimming ...

4 years ago | Likes 474 Dislikes 1

I hate to burst your bubble, but Russians do this, too. How do I know? I am Siberian.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No wonder Russia failed to invade Finland.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Well, it's one thing to swim 30 minutes at a time and another to spend the night. I'm not doing either though.

4 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

And then a whole other thing to spend 2 weeks day and night in it.

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Eggs act, Lee. The cold is the same from night to night but it can take a toll.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That explains a historical event.

4 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 0

yes, the Great Nuts-Freezing-Off of 1940

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I guess sum russian nuts are freezing right now. I think it is cold in Ukraine this time of year.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This happened this years olympics:

I hope his friends now call him Popsicle or some local brand of it.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Swimming in ice cold water is one thing, but swimming under the ice seems insane

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Not recommended without very good conditions. I know a guy who got stuck for 8 minutes before they got him out. Still OK though.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You're not dead until you're warm and dead

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

She seems to have a safety line when going under the ice.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

So with extreme regulating temperature like hers, you think she still gets ice cold feet or hands when sleeping?

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I'm thinking she doesn't have a normal system. Saw a story on a guy like that, able to run in below freezing with just shoes and shorts.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Some of it is genetic but a lot is just getting used to the feeling and having your body work as intended.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a kid I used to watch this guy always going to town on his bcycle wearing only swimming pants and slippers at -25 degrees C.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nah, just used to it. I used to play ice hockey and ski in a T-shirt. Cold ain't that bad. Heat is far worse, I cant stand over +20Celsius.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I live somewhwre that makes 0°C and 40°C through the year and I'm just like you... goddamit

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, we have 30+ summers in Finland nowadays and it is so bad.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Then comes your average Joe say "global warming is a hoax" it used to snow here.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I did that ONCE.

4 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 1

Well sure, she seems nice enough just a little to into ice swimming.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I did that never.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Tried bathing in a mountain stream once and it hurt, I cannot imagine being fully submerged in a frozen over lake.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I did it once on a dare. Swear to God my balls ran straight up into my throat.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

was it a breathtaking experience?

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You could not pay me enough. Fuck that action imho

4 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

It's great when you do it after sauna, and can go straight back in. Taking a swim though? No thanks.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I did it for a boy scout merit badge. If I did it now I might gave a heart attack or stroke. Nope

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

My heart would quit there and then. No doubt about it.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Rope stuck in the propeller of the boat, early December in the gulf of Maine, nowhere near as cold as ice swimming and I still say no thanks

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

On purpose?!?!?!

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Boy scout merit badge. Sounds stupid now.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nah dude it was am experience. Hopefully one you never have to do again. Lol unless you want to I guess.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I won't say never again but it would have to be for a good reason like a bunch of cash money.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same or for the Special Olympics thing they do here. But thats more of a run in real quick and get out. Lol

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Synopsis: There's pain everywhere, but it's fun.

4 years ago | Likes 206 Dislikes 0

Can confirm. This winter was good, plenty of soft powder snow on the back yard to take "baths" in. Hurts like hell, feels good.

1/2 heard an interview with a guy who does scarification, cuts patterns into people's skin. when he described it he said

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

2/2"of course there is pain, but because you submit willingly, there is no suffering."

4 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

There truly is a distinction, even on a neurophysiological level.

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I'm have a toothache for 3 days now with no appointment available so this is uplifting. I'm having fun... Yes fun.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Type two fun.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

is she just brave or insane? lol i look at that ice and im already cold!

4 years ago | Likes 580 Dislikes 0

How do you not get frostbite from staying in icy water that long?

Brown fat.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

As a Canadian, I'm saying she's insane.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

"Insane" is too clinical of a term for what she is. I think "fucking crazy" is closer to the mark.

4 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Am finn. Can confirm

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not to mention the 1 tiny space to go up for air, & she's swimming along under the thick ice far from it.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

She's Finnish.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The water retains a bunch of heat from summer, it’s a few degrees above zero just a couple feet down.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Safety equipment on the swims rules out some insanity. No shoes for the ice to in the water is what I can't understand

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

my mom does this too. she's 70. And lives in finnish lapland. My kid is 5, and he does it too.

4 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Ice swimming takes a couple of tries to get used to but it's not that bad

4 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Don't fall for it guys, the scandiwegians think everyone's like them

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Ice baths are really good for recovery, especially after a grueling workout.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It would make me cramp hard enough to nearly break bones... probably not good for my recovery.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wasn't this debunked?

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sauce?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can say that at least on an emotional level it works for sure. Can't say If recovery mechanics are supported by Science though.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ronaldo does icebaths for recovery too.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just remember that the water is prolly warmer than the air - not even kidding here! ;)

4 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 1

Water always trends towards 4°C. The further away from the ice, the closer to that temp it's going to be.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Water trends to the surrounding temperature, it's not fucking magic. 4°C is just the point where water is densest.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

But it is FAR more thermally conductive.

4 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

Fun fact water is considerably more thermally conductive than cooking oil, if you could get water up to a frying temperature without it...

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

...boiling off and evaporating it would actually brown things much harder and faster than traditional mediums. Alternately, try dipping...

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Its enormous specific heat is why sweating is so effective.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Well she's a Finn, so likely she's mad.

4 years ago | Likes 155 Dislikes 1

She probably doesn't exist at all!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And it's the next way to guarantee being far from others

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

lol
