This might get buried in user sub... but i thought that i should post it to raise some awareness on what to lookout for and what our mistakes were...

So yesterday on the 22nd we had someone break into our house. I was coming home from college and bought subway on the way. When I made it home I noticed nothing out of the ordinary so I walked to the main door with my sub and drink.
When I realized that I couldn't get the glass door open as you can see on this picture. I put my things down to try to see if something was jammed when I left. That's when I saw my door was kicked in and broken. I called my mom to let her know to call 911. We have a small pug thats just 9 months old. I was worried about her so I tried to find a way inside when I did I called out my dog to see if she would reply... And that's when I heard something drop from upstairs and footsteps. My reaction was screw this I'm going back out to my car and sit there.
When I got back inside the car I pulled out of my driveway and parallel parked confront of my house to keep an eye out for the main door and backyard. 911 dispatch called my cell phone and asked me questions if I heard or saw anyone. I told them what I heard and told me police were on their way. While I was describing how I came to find my house being broke into I saw a person walk through between 2 houses about 2 houses down from mine that looked suspecious. We made eye contact and I tried to grab as much detail as possible in the short span that felt like a whole hour. I didn't know if this guy had a weapon or anything but it felt like time slowed down... I told dispatch and asked me where he was headed I told them South down OP's street to meet with main intersection going north. That's when he turned left and a unmarked police SUV saw him and started the chase on foot. Streets were blocked by police to try to find this person. It must of lasted 10-15 mins and they finally caught the guy and arrested him. Props to you Canadian Police for finding him. But we were worried about our dog... So an hour went by the investigation inside my house when we were finally allowed to go inside with still no sighting of my dog. At this point we were crying all we wanted was our dog. A police officer found my dog in the basement underneath the couch. The thief must of thrown her downstairs because she now has problems breathing and keeps choking and she isn't walking straight and we will be taking her to the vet in the morning. We just wanted to see if something was wrong with her since all she wanted to do was be in our arms. I'm thankful for coming in at the right time because people like this usually get away.

**to explain why I called my mom to call 911 is because I didn't expect to see someone inside the house. I was more worried about my dog than to call, plus she would be alerted as well killing 2 birds with one stone. But I got in contact with 911 when I heard the guy inside right away**
Advice...

Please always let your neighbors know when you are going out or leaving for vacation.

Spend some money on cameras and a sticker to put on the door to deter people.

Home alarm systems.

It's all worth it... trust me... after this I regret not having these sorts of things. Just the scare alone of my dog not being okay or not showing up or even stolen was killing me inside.

TL:DR
OPs house got broken into when he got there saw door busted open. Called police. OP saw the guy coming through between 2 houses. Chase was on with the police. And caught him.
OPs Dog is injured.

**update**
Thanks for taking this post to the main page, and for helping me raise a bit of awareness. Sorry I posted the quote "this might get buried in user sub" But to be honest, most things do get buried and I was trying to raise a bit of awareness. Other than that, in about 2 more hours we will be taking pupper to the vet. She still had problems breathing but she is now playing with a plastic water bottle and being a happy pupper. :)

**vet update**
The vet said that my dog isn't seriously harmed on the outside, she does have some bruises on her body but not life threatening. The only downside is, whenever we go downstairs or come upstairs she runs away from us in fear of being hit. When we get close to her she starts peeing herself and shaking. We are going to get in contact with a lawyer and press further charges.

OPs dog tax. Her name is Harley.

@OP I'm sorry your house got broken in to but we NEED an update on Harley! How's she doing?

Someone who kicks a door down and harms your dog is dangerously unstable. You did the right thing, sorry it happened, glad you are ok.

Lucky they caught them. Most B & E crimes are unsolved with no item recovery. Please have insurance people

A few yrs ago my apt was broken into & many things were stolen and never found. The thief was caught. I now have cameras and conceal carry.

It really does ruin your sense of safety in your own home. I was living alone when I was robbed, never found them. Cat was ok though.

If someone tries to rob my home: "dang it, someone was here before us"

In Canada Animal cruelty can potentially recieve the same prison sentence as murder, especially if your puppy was to pass because 1/2

In my state in the US, the max fine for anything short of animal torture or mutilation is $1000 or 1 year in prison.

Hope your puppy is well. Same shit happened to me couple years ago. 2 days before Christmas. They stole all my sneakers, a camera and some.

It feels so bad knowing someone was in your house without consent. And I'm sorry to hear that :(

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks mate, you know, bad things can happen to all of us. Hope you will never experience something like that. Stay safe :)

All those words and you still can't figure out how to use the word "of."

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 6

Breaking into a house is one thing but hurting a dog only doing his job is a cowardly act.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Who cares about the door or anything they took or damaged, but that fucker should be flung from a catapult into a brick wall for the dog.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I feel for you and your little pup, but 'must of' doesn't sense. It's must've or must have.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yea, ruined the whole story.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Neither does “doesn’t sense”

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Hope everything turns out alright @OP, but I do feel the need to disagree with the "letting the neighbors know" bit. That's actually one /

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

/ of the worst things you could do, because people talk. You tell your neighbor, next thing you know half the town knows you're gone. /

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

/ That's how most home robberies happen--someone lets it slip that the house is empty, and opportunistic robbers swoop in.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yup. I get where you're coming from. But literally everyone knows each other in our street. Our neighbours give us keys when they leave /

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

for vacation and we do the same. They take care of our plants, turn some lights on, shovel the driveway for us if it's winter. Even put /

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

some garbage outside so it looks like someone is home. But yeah it's a double edge sword.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tack on an animal cruelty charge on top of the break and enter!

Where I am, it'll be a couple hundred dollars. Max fine is $1000. I cared for a dog that was beaten with a bat and they didn't get the max

Almost all burglaries are committed by someone you know... Also what sandwich did you get at Subway OP? Hope your doggo is doing alright.

8 years ago | Likes 127 Dislikes 11

They say you shouldn't post online if you're going on vacation or tell a lot of people. It lets people know your house is an easy target.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is so not true... burglaries are targets of opportunity. Violence is different.

Pretty sure you're thinking of murders. Burglaries are mostly junkies.

8 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

Aye, that’s why I’m always sad when a burglar gets killed. They need help, not a bullet :( Glad the cops picked this guy up without incident

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 13

Yeah I'm not sure what the solution is, but shooting them doesn't seem to be working. That said, if I was in the house and had a gun...

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Typically that would be my reaction because I have no way of knowing if the person broke in to steal jewelry or massacre my family.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You use the gun to intimidate, scare them off, or hold them there. Only pull the trigger if they use a weapon against you.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 7

Never point a gun at someone if you intend not to use it.

We have a home security system and cameras and a nice big wooden door. Didn't stop our crackhead neighbor from breaking in but it sure did

get him caught pretty fast tho.

To be fair to @OP, my family’s house was broken in when I was younger—steel door AND deadbolt. Ripped the door frame to shit. 1/2

I was hoping it was going to be a joke about her subway sandwich

How about having some fucking compassion instead of being triggered by a buzz term? If it bothers you that much, downvote and move on.

8 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 79

Fuck that scumbag. Glad you caught them in the act. Unfortunately, this being Canada he'll probably get minimal punishment.

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 11

Or rather, he'll get an appropriate sentence as Canada understands that revenge has no place in a functioning justice system.

8 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 17

Consequence isnt revenge. A slap on the wrist isnt appropriate in these situations

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 3

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I donno, throwing a dog down the stairs means I want revenge

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

Fuckin' A. The US doesn't understand the concept of rehabilitation

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 12

The US knows the best deterrent for crime is making it follow you around for the rest of your life. Sounds reasonable.

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 9

But then because the crime follows them forever they can't get a job and end up turning to more crime in order to live. Yay USA.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Most crime is not out of desperation to survive, so no.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

When your run jails for a profit you're inherently disinterested in rehabilitation or keeping people out of jail.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

The vast majority of prisons in the US are run by the government and not for profit.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's terrifying how few people understand the distinction between justice and revenge.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 4

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

Inswing doors are easy to kick in. If you can't switch to outswing, at least buy a security strike plate:

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Fran Drescher wrote in her bio about her rape/home invasion. If I remembr, outswing door, they removed hinge pins. Now there's security pins

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And use some decent screws to secure it, not the little short ones most doors have. We were robbed once, got one of the security plates ...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And when someone tried again a couple years later they had a much hard time kicking door in and eventually gave up without getting inside

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good work. It can't stop everyone, bit it might discourage some.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We paired it with an alarm system too. You really can't stop someone that's determined, but you can limit the time they have to loot.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Aren't most front doors inswing due to insulation?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Most in the north are inswing so you don't get snowed in. Many in the south are outswing for better hurricane/weather/burglar protection.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The fact that they didn't just break the glass confuses me.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

On a wooden door, with a glass viewers?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Didn't say it was bulletproof, but it would make it harder to kick in the door. Could still break the windows or get in some other way.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Funny. Crowbar proof will suffice, not like attaching it to a wooden door will make it harder to enter, even if it will make a compound. 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Entertaining a front door is less noticed than through the window. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't know. I took my front door out on a few dates, and I felt very conspicuous.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

*Reading about the break-in* Oh man, that's awful *reads bit about dog injuries*

8 years ago | Likes 161 Dislikes 1

I own a pug, and that is the correct response for anyone who hurts her, or any dog for that matter, but especially pugs.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

oooh, yeah... because they're predisposed to having those kinds of issues anyway.... augh asldkfjadsflakjsdf;asdkjfa;sdkjf

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Isn't breathing problems and walking funny standard pug behaviour? I kid, I kid, hope the dog's OK OP, the whole experience sucks.

8 years ago | Likes 418 Dislikes 11

Had a college roommate who grew up on a pug 'farm'. He had to bury dead pugs on the daily. Terrible cosmetic traits being bred into them

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 4

Op just needs to change it’s batteries

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Literally what I was thinking as well. Pugs are a disaster.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Mine is 9 and he doesnt have that issue. Only issue he has is when I leave for work he gets sad.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep. They're not a healthy breed at all.

8 years ago | Likes 159 Dislikes 11

Mine is 9 and he doesnt have any health issues.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They live longer than many large dogs. Just 'cause they look like total derps while doing it doesn't mean they have lower quality of life.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I feel, that there are enough diseases that they probably have a lesser quality of life

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

They are starting to breed the longer snounts back in. After a few generations they should be healthy again

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

I don't think that dog will be healthy even with the longer snout. The body shape isnt the best as it is. :/

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Dont forget about the hip dysplasia, patellar luxaton, and eye disease

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

One issue at a time.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They should not be bred further. It's cruel.

8 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 7

100% agree. It's even worse when backyard breeders do it. They don't do it for the betterment of the breed, only for money.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

There's a movement that breeds them back to a healthy level. Not sure who or where but I heard of it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Funnily enough, stating the same of pit-bulls for being replete with health issues, let alone the capacity to injure, will assure downvotes.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Health problems are common in all purebreds, to be fair, what with pedigree requiring inbreeding. Which is why I'm against selective <

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

> breeding. People should just adopt mutts from the shelters.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

At this point im honestly supportive of stopping breeding and cross breeding them to make a new standard pug breed, it's so cruel like this

8 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 3

Yes. It should be. They are miserable creatures.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 2

Google how the pug looked like ~100 years ago. Longer legs and straighter snout.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

And that double curl tail that's so popular is also a sign of genetic disease/defect

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I feel the same about chihuahua's. Beside being ankle biting, yapping bastards, my roommate has 4 without bottom teeth or bottom jaws

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Yep. I'm not a fan either!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Depending on the breeder, Chihuahuas are typically a healthy breed, owing to a relatively continuous ancestry that featured little change.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Correct, though OPs pug looks like it's been on the good end of genetics with its muzzle. Not as squished.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Haha, if they are overfed then yeah, owners don't really take them for walks to burn the fat. Pugs are silly dogs. Haha. Vet soon!

8 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 17

So what you’re saying is that it has nothing at all to do with their actual physiology? Not their smooshed face or bad hearts or shot joints

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

Yes that can come into problems if they don't exercise or keep the pug in a diet. That's why they always tell people to force them to run.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 12

Force a dog with a smashed in face to run, you say.......

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 4

What were they originally bred for? (Wikipedia is just TOO far away today.)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I mean, originally they didnt have the smashed faces and looked a lot like normal dogs. We've since bred them to be "cute"

Shot or harmed the home owner can be sued.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I don't think some thieves are smart enough to figure that out, even if it's true..

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

You are only allowed force equal to what the thief has, in most states

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Um not every state has laws like that. Also, you have liability for any bodily harm on your property, and booby traps are straight illegal..

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hm right like iPads and stuff. Not a big yield. Gotta be real desperate risking for a few hundred bucks...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's so cruel. One of my fathers friends works as a builder and he always takes his dog with him (Buster) in his van. He was finishing a 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

a job and Buster was in the back. Two guys stole it and they let the dog out on a motorway. Luckily he was unhurt and returned to the owner.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

However Buster was shaken up for quite a while. It's been quite a few months now but he's back to himself again.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Im not too sure about Canadian laws over animal abuse, but if he threw your doggo and it got hurt, can't that be an additional charge + B&E?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Most likely yes. We are gonna be talking with our lawyer today and see what we can do for ourselves to press charges.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Best thing to get past the violation of a break in is hosting an event. Having loved ones fill the space overruns the feeling of insecurity.
