The GAU-8 Avenger, a gatling canon mounted in the A-10 Warthog, fires this round at 3900 rounds per minute, or about 65 rounds per second.

Seems more like a 'Tall beer glass' than a shot glass.

I own one of the real depleted uranium rounds. Dad was maintenance super for the A-10 squadron at Eielson AFB AK in the mid 80's.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*possess. I'm betting legal ownership has not been formally transferred.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wonder how many people have shit themselves when they heard that coming for them

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Rounds are flying much faster than the speed of sound. You don't get to hear the glorious symphony because you've been turned to goo.

Let me sing you the song of my people *BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRT*

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you take the gun out, the plane will tip backwards if you don't put a jack under the tail.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I've known a few Jacks that were just dumb enough to be used for that function.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Rear landing gears on planes are supposed to be close to the center of gravity, so that actually isn't too surprising

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Correct. The plane is built around the cannon.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's that crazy gun that in theory could jump mountains with the recoil

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

If you had unlimited ammo that didn't affect your mass but did affect recoil, sure.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Recoil is almost exactly same as thrust of the single A-10 engine.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

These are also attached to CIWS & CRAM too if I remember correctly

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Goalkeeper. Dutch equivalent.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

No, CIWS uses the M61 Vulcan, which has but a fraction of the GAU-8's muzzle energy.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

There’s a 4 barreled 20mm variant of CRAM that’s used by a European forces as an AA Gun

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

C-RAM is a broad category. Iron dome is considered CRAM. So is MANTIS. And CIWS.

Holy mother of God..... the most well played gif response I've ever seen. Take my +1 and shove it up your butt.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Damn. That's a whole lot of freedom per second.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Worth noting that you really shouldn't spin the barrels with hand, because that empties the ammo with a hell of a long BRRRRT.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The gun is externally operated. If you rotate it by hand, it can indeed fire, but it doesn't magically goes "brrrrt" as drives are inactive.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Happened during maintenance in Netherlands with F16, that has a smaller gatling gun too.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

That is just wild guess, afaik investigation is still ongoing.

How much would one round cost?

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You want that in Freedom Dollars or Justice Bucks?

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Not quite what you're asking, but as someone else linked: https://www.amazon.com/Thunderbolt-Warthog-Collectors-Inert-Cannon/dp/B00I7EVQ0E

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you, just found out they are about 136 dollar each...about 160,000 dollar for a magazine.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

OK, so... a bit under 2.5K for Nate Dogg to get his "16 in the clip & one in the hole", for about .2sec of fun. Now we know!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is there somewhere a person could buy a single (not live) round? That would be wicked to just have that.

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Fuck yes sir...ive had 3 of them..just sold my last one...looking at the brand new one currently...trying to make decision...Yami Brothers!!

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If they're so great, why do you keep selling them? And why not step up to the R1?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Been stuffing tracers into those projectiles for the past two weeks...good times.

7 years ago | Likes 107 Dislikes 0

I'm hearing that tracer rounds don't have the same trajectory as other types of rounds, so are not so useful. Compensation factor?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Seems like the majority of traced rounds tend to be training.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They also clean the barrels from what I've been told

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

something something I'm already tracer...imma go die now

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

IIRC the regular rounds are depleted uranium, yes?

7 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

No not anymore us government has stopped production and has been demilitarizing them.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can someone lick one and tell us what it tastes like?

7 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Cancer and birth defects.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tastes like freedom with a hint of liberation

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Cotton candy and mutation.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Oh and just a hint of Death

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nothing wrong with that, only natural.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Has a 5 to 1 mix of PGU-14/B armor piercing incendiary rounds with an aluminum body cast about a smaller caliber depleted uranium core

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Thanky!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fun fact, its called the party mix. (Combat Mix is the actual name)

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Is there an Extreme Nacho Cheese version? I mean that would be cool.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You've got it wrong, the cannon isn't mounted in the plane, the plane is mounted on the cannon.

7 years ago | Likes 1025 Dislikes 8

wrong. The plane is mounted in the bullet. This is how it flies.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

*shrink wrapped onto the cannon. And off centre too! (and yes I know why that is)

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You are correct good sir.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They invented a really cool gun, realised none of the extant vehicles could mount it effectively so they made it a plane

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

One of the few vehicles with a spinal mount cannon as seen in a lot of scifi starships

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That's basically correct.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

7 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

The A-10 is on the accessory list for this weapon system

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Oh yeah. I think I read somewhere they designed the plane around the gun.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

True statement!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The guns thoughts on this

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well, they did design the weight distribution around the cannon, so you're not far off

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

More than weight distribution, the nose landing gear is off center so the gun's firing barrel can be dead-on centerline.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

7 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

I was about to say.. The literally designed the plane around the gun.

7 years ago | Likes 159 Dislikes 2

Exactly. It's basically a Deathstar.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Failed the first time. The gun used to be center mounted till they tested and the recoil stalled the plane. The plane was then shifted over.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"You know what would make this weapon more effective? Let's make this sumbitch fly."

7 years ago | Likes 99 Dislikes 1

Ok, but we can’t let the pilot fire it for too long because it slows the plane down too much.

7 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

"Sir, we'd have to design a new plane specifically for this gun." - "what you're saying is, there'll be a juicy new contract up for grabs?"

7 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

This isn't even a joke.

7 years ago | Likes 90 Dislikes 3

Considering how much imgur is obsessed with this plane I think everyone is already aware

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

The meme predates imgur

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Brrrrrrrrtttt is life...not a game.

7 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Worth noting that every fighter craft and bomber is nothing more than a weapons delivery system. Jet pilots are basically metal FedEx

7 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 1

Aerospace engineers build the delivery system. Civil Engineers build the targets.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And sometimes they deliver people instead.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Who also deliver metal...

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Or paper.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What about reconnaissance?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

World's fastest camera:

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I can't wait until the Aurora is declassified so we can get a look at it.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

That's not the space shuttle.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Actually, correction to my last, the Juno probe is the fastest camera we've ever built. Clocked in at 165,000 mph (265,000 kmph).

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Did it have the fastest acceleration though or just speed?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Both New Horizons and the Parker Solar Probe have exceeded that. At least New Horizons carries a camera.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Worth noting that this Gatling gun is fired it slows the plan down

7 years ago | Likes 228 Dislikes 4

wow.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Its worth noting that an air rifle mounted on the plane shooting forwards slows the plane down (albeit less so).

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Technically that happens any time a plane fires a forward facing cannon

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That is actually a myth. Its perpetuated by a10 pilots but still a myth

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Stop downvoting this comment, he's right.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love it when a plan comes together.. Slowly..

7 years ago | Likes 112 Dislikes 1

Yay conservation of momentum!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To be precise: The GAU-8/A has a recoil of 44.5kN. Each of the A-10's engines ist at 40,3 kN. 10004 and 9064 lbs of force respectively.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How long would the gun have to fire to stall the plane, assuming infinite ammo.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The barrels would melt long before it stalled out

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

only by 5 knots at absolute max. The A-10 doesn't carry enough ammo to slow it down by any appreciable amount.

7 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

1350 rounds of 30mm HEI mixed with some API. The API has a core of depleted Uranium. which will be deployed in less than 21 seconds.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Re-design is in order, thing needs to carry more ammunition.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It carries plenty. Firing it all at once would cause the barrels to bend from the heat.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We need to come up with a gun and ammo system so over the top that a plane can be brought to a dead stop mid-air!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

or, alternatively, when mounted to the rear, provides enough thrust for take off...

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Its main gun isn't actually that effective. Most of the time the A10 drops JDAMs.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Expensive breaks. Must make a real mess of the end of the runway.

7 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 1

*brakes

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That too

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Which is why you always see the plane go into a bit of a dive when they fire it.

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 10

that's for aiming bud

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I think the main purpose is to point the gun towards what their firing at

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

They go into a dive to shoot the target on the ground

7 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 1

That too. I’ve always heard they go into a dive when firing as well to prevent a stall.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The gun's thrust is roughly equal to the thrust of one of the two engines. Not sure if it could fly indefinitely on "one" engine. But ammo

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's required to be able to fly on just one

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

- smile big as shit and say their main canon. Firing the gun overwhelms you with the smell of powder & shakes the whole plane, it's amazing.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I can imagine that’s an amazing feeling

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I can tell you first hand that the canon won't stall the bird and that if you ask any A10 pilot which weapon system they prefer they'll all-

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Kind of an urban legend. A pilot can fire the Gau-8 until he runs out of ammo, and will not stall. It only slows by 5 knots max.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

The A-10 doesn't carry enough Ammo to produce enough force to stall the aircraft.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0
