It smells a little. Not terribly. Leaves are falling off and a couple stems have shriveled up

The plant is cycling its own food sources... Put some earth worm castings in top and water in

Roots have a slight smell. I was keeping the soil slightly moist. I’ve overwatered some plants so now I’m paranoid.

Hmm. Let it dry out a bit between waterings and you should be ok as long as nothing is mushy

Some lower leaves have fallen off. And a couple stems shriveled up. Maybe I overwatered? Will it continue to deteriorate?

Plants naturally lose leaves. Are there new shoots on top?

Yes. They’ve been there since purchasing though

As long as those keep growing and you don't lose all the leaves you're good.
