We had some visitors at work the other day. A swarm of Honey Bees decided to make their home with us

Approximately30000 of the little beauties according to the local beekeeper who came to our rescue

Here he's using a smoker to calm them down before trying to find the Queen

They're not that calm really though. He's using a brush to sweep the bees into the box, hopefully getting the Queen at the same time

more brushing

thankfully the Queen was located and is in the box. All of the other bees are just walking into the box, calm as you like. It took about two hours from stsrt to finish but he got every single one and is rehoming them in an empty hive he has.
I know bees are important, they're vital to our survival, but I was glad to see the back of them. One or two I can cope with, but 30000 at the same time made me feel a little uncomfortable.

As an aside, when we phoned the beekeper he refused to believe we had a swarm because it was too early in the year for them. He had never heard of a swarm this early before.

I worked with a beekeeper for a summer as a kid: hard and fascinating job. Biggest swarm I ever saw was around 180k bees...

Thank you for saving them instead of killing them.

Glad you called a beekeeper not a pest control bod. Fascinating watching them walk in...

Approximately! Really?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There is value on rehomming. The beekeeper gets a consolidated beehive, you get rid of a problem. Win win

Wtf this exact same thing happened to us today. Shit was wild to walk out side one of the bay doors to 1000 bees. Kinda apocalyptic lmao

I love watching swarm captures. I tend to watch like the 328dirtrooster or other homely channels doing it.

Always try to contact a bee keeper in situations like this. Bees are in decline and a bee keeper will always say yes to adding to his flock.

Every hive has such bumble beginnings

HU-WHAT'S THIS???

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

those are some Fly Honeys

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks for not calling an exterminator!

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Any exterminator worth his salt should have referred him to a bee-keeper. I'm not even sure if they were allowed to kill bees in Germany.

"but I was glad to see the back of them. " Uh, that's the part you *don't* want in your direction.

If you see a honeybee in So. Arizona, 90% chance it's africanized.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Correction: She's africanized.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How do you find the queen among all those bees? What does its crown look like?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

She is longer & a little bigger. So she stands out. Once found she goes into a queen cage until she is marked for easier locating.

The trick to working with honeybees is patience.

Gob is not on-board

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We've had to split one of our hives to prevent a swarm and the association were out to swarms a week back. It is a little early but not 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Excessively so, Easter being lateish this year throws people's perception of time somewhat.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If they weren't building a hive, they were just resting up for the next leg of their journey.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You never know! I've seen bees setup in the strangest of places.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Word. They set up in the floor of my barn - directly underneath the furnace! - and I had to completely disassemble it to get the queen out!

+1 @OP For Bee-ing a decent human Bee-ing

B+

Pretty sure queen is looking for a new hive, and they're stopping to rest. If that showed up overnight that's probably it.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Once a hive reaches X size they will swarm. Some stay & some leave to find a new home. Usually more go then stay though.

I just posted about this I'm another comment. Small channel figured few would know him! Love seeing somebody else watching out there!

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He’s great!

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Up until I started watching this channel, I thought a bee “swarm” was an anger thing, rather than a growth / environmental thing.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That was a bee-autiful gesture

It makes me feel all s-warm inside.

v

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I can't bee-lieve you did that

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Hive five!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm sure he was ecstatic. Bees are expensive, man.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Hobby beekeepers love getting an easy swarm. Commerical keepers don't care though. <3 hobby keepers.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I suppose that makes sense.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

At least they weren't Mexican Killer Bees! v

7 years ago | Likes 80 Dislikes 3

That .gif made my day! Thank you!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I see the joke, interestingly we don't have Killer Bees in the UK. There was a scare about Africanised Bees a while ago but nothing happened

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

There's still a significant amount of scare about Islam Bees and Bad EU Deal Bees, though :D

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Brexit bees! Nasty buggers those

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You did the right thing. A lesser person would’ve used wasp-fogger poison

7 years ago | Likes 261 Dislikes 2

I'd call in some good ol orbital bombardment but you do you.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 24

If its a wasp/hornet nest, absofuckinglutely! honey bees typically dont mess with me, so we have an agreement to leave each other bee

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Where I live, wasps and especially hornets are protected. Destroying their nests on you own can be prosecuted.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Damn

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(And not bug one another)

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A hundred or so, that's what I would have done probably. But 30,000? Fuck that I'm calling a professional and staying the fuck away.

7 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 10

Same unless it’s a wasp nest in which cause fritz get ze flamenwerfer

7 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Why fritz? Is hanz drunk again

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Nien hanz waz a spy

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

hanz was always suspicious... I think i saw him squatting once, with heel down!

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You are wrong. Unknown hives should be eradicated to prevent disease spread like bee plague or nosema. Unless 100% sure about their origin.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 31

Okay but by a professional. I don’t know Jack about bees, and your endorsement to just vaporize any and all wild hives echoes the same.

7 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I do know jack about bees. That is standard procedure. By not doing so, he endangers other hives willingly. Good job.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 13

Since you have no posts/comments/status or anything to prove your merit, can you provide a source for that info? You don’t come off as 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Knowledgeable when you pretty much leave it at: kill all wild bees! Domesticated bees only! You sound like PETA

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Sorry, calling in a pro is correct as they can decide whether to save or not. Simply killing a swarm out of ignorance is shortsighted

7 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 1

Simply killing a swarm out of ignorance saves other hives. Unless you want that particular hvie to be examined. yeah...

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 21

So don't use a pro if available, just kill, gotcha
