Visualisation is power.

What about your regular ass?

I like to listen to synthwave when doing cardio so I can pretend I’m in an 80’s movie training montage. Nothing motivates you like training to defeat the Russians/the bully at your school or win the (central event of the story) and get your crush’s attention at the end of the movie

Just wear normal clothes when you go to the gym -_-

She sure is! Got to be hard dragging that wagon

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

wouldn't this only work if they all start at the same time and train for the same kind of race?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some dude in Truck Simulator will see Daphe cruising by.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Did you know you can just start running at someone and you'll get to have a race with them?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This brings gyms to even more absurd levels than they already are

I'll bet the view is nice.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is pretty cool.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 4

Killing me that they’re going the wrong direction on the track.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea this would help me as well when I was younger there was a gym with a rowing machines and you could race someone or race someone in the past.

Now go home and get your fucking ̶s̶h̶i̶n̶e̶b̶o̶x̶ ibuprofen

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's just competition. Gamifying would give some stats or something for performance. What you're looking at is a race.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

Why not just run outside?

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

105 degrees.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As others are saying, the heat index here in Minnesota tomorrow is going to be 105. I did my outside shit Friday when it was like 79 and breezy.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because the Graphics outside is shit.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Looks fun but ill go ahead and take one of the ones not hooked up to the big competition screen thanks. Going to the gym is all about personal goals, not trying to lift more than the other guy imo

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 5

You can race your own ghost as well

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am actually concerned someone on a genuine competitive brain will overdo their exercise and at worst, pass out.

Never really watched Black Mirror and this was my first episode. It was captivating but so bleak. 10/10 storytelling but I'm not watching the series anymore after it.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hey a young Daniel Kaluuya. I forgot he was in Black Mirror before Black Panther and Get Out.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

...I have a copy of Ring Fit...

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Idk, I hate competition. I hate that everything is gamified. I hate that everything in our culture is all about being better than someone else.

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 6

It could take on different iterations, like cooperative gaming, but man getting out of my head helps me so much when working out I'd love grabbing coins like Mario or something to keep me from focusing on the discomfort

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I like gaming, but whenever I see a game that looks appealing, and then I notice the word "multiplayer" I pretty much immediately lose all interest.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Precisely how I feel as well. Competition feels good for the people that win in those competitions, but not for the people that lose them all the time. I just want to exercise for myself, I don't want to always be comparing myself to somebody else. Fuck all that shit

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Maybe if they made single player experiences. The track they have on screen looks interesting.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Making the pursuit of health a competition will motivate a few and alienate the majority. Fitness is not a race with others but a race with yourself.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why motivate yourself with competition when you can use the greatest motivator.. fear!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But you're still walking, so pat yourself on the back

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just like with lifting, it's the reps that count in cardio. I'm a big dude trying to lose weight, I'll get on an elliptical at the gym, and there's always some gymbro who needs to show me how much faster they are, so they get on next to me and sprint along....for five minutes. And then they get off. And I keep going for another half hour, because I'm there to do some fucking cardio, not show off to shallow dickheads.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm #7

Definitely think gamified exercise is a great idea, but gamifying it by making it look like... regular exercise? That's what the WiiFit did so wrong. If I want to run for the sake of running, I'll just run! And making it a PvP game, because everyone in the gyms aren't intimidatingly fit enough already? Now, Beat Saber, I'll play for hours. Fallout 3 VR, I'll jog-trek for miles. But THIS? Awwhellno-nope-nope-noway.

2 years ago | Likes 171 Dislikes 5

Upvoted all the replies, great ideas. A horror game running from zombies would be awesome.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you! There needs to be as wide a variety of gamified exercise types as there are game genres, to entice all kinds of people.

2 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 2

Yeah, at least put some zombies chasing me on the track.

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Can we have this but .. not as PvP please? People are too toxic as it is already.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

That ms because pvp isn’t sold to you but rich athletes

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

And if you REALLY want to get fit....a horror VR experience with jumpscare monsters.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

There's a stair climbing machine at my gym which has video of climbing remote mountain passes in Switzerland, Peru and New Zealand. It's stunning

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's definitely some value to be had in gamifying it to make competitive people haul ass though. Won't be a hit for every crowd, but practically nothing is.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Fallout 3 haha. Deathclaws chasing you from Old Olney to Tenpenny Tower would be a workout.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Death Stranding VR would be dope.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Lol, I'm literally in my workout clothes to play some Beat Saber and Creed after I walk my dogs. My take is that "exercise games" like WiiFit, Ring fit etc. Start the design process of wanting to take a workout and gamify it, while Beat Saber, DDR, Creed, the design process starts with the game and adds exercise to it. It's a fundamental difference of deciding "I want to play a game" vs. "I want to work out".

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I agree. This offers very few advantages to just racing people on a real track (the only notable one is it doesn't depend on the weather).

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Played beat saber all through the pandemic. As I started playing 9-star songs I was sweating buckets. Great way to get some exercise

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

we had this in the 90's with connected rowing machines

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I was about to say if you were going to gaming it like this, y'all might as well just find a track and then just race for real

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Exactly. Though I guess it could be a hot-weather thing. Running in cool AC is way nicer and safer than trying to run in the string of 100+F heat, red-flag days we've been getting here lately.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

wait, they weren't talking about that booty?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't forget Ringfit on the switch. (Or do. Whatever. I'm not your gym coach.)

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some people need the novelty. My AuDHD ass sure does. It's why I have color changing cups - the novelty makes me want to drink more water

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Assassin's Creed VR. Climbing, fighting, parkour.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm convinced I would accidentally leap-of-faith into my TV while wearing my headset.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I thought they had a FPS that used a harness/VR set and a slick floor to allow yourself to be running while firing? Also, I remember a bike

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

one that allowed for biking and shooting as well?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup, all that exists :) Also if you can't affort one of the expensive slidey-floor rigs, there's CyberShoes with kinda... wheels that work like mouseballs, so you can sit on a barstool and "walk" with your real feet in the game.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We need more gamified exercise. I mean even years later I still get my fat ass out of my chair (almost) every day for my sweet hit of 3DS Play Coins.

2 years ago | Likes 334 Dislikes 5

That's why I joined a kickboxing place.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When we would run in the Army, the cadences were designed to make it less boring... they did not work.... what I really needed was someone chasing me with a shotgun filled with rock salt...

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I use EGYM at the Y - not much of a game, but you collect "coins" as you do properly timed reps and I get really pissed when I miss one 🤣

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Or you could do sports? Wouldn't that just be exercise in game form?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I pretty much only use the Lanebreak mode on Peloton, it’s like a game and you don’t have some fitness influence harassing you

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Competitions create motivation

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

CrossFit and Peloton are examples of gamifying workouts that work pretty well.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Aren't Peloton bikes ridiculously expensive tho?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Depends who you ask? Looks like their equipment is $2000-3000 range, plus $13+/mo for the classes. I pay $150/mo for CrossFit and it's sure worth it to me.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pikmin Bloom managed to make me lose enough weight I had to buy a new belt, I think Nintendo is on to something, Wii Fit used to be good enough for basic fitness it served as well as an actual physical trainer

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I got sciatica (fancy medical term for ripping a nerve bundle off your spine) trying to exercise using VR. Now I can't feel my right hip and foot. So... use with caution..?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Between Blade and Sorcery and Beat Saber Ive gotten pretty big on the arms. The secret is death metal.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wanna get a vr headset for the exclusive reason of Beat Saber. Shit looks like the coolest workout ever.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's plenty of workout related VR apps. There's even one with a censor that connect to the elliptical or stationary bike

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I remember rowers and stationary bikes with SNES controls and special games on them in the late 90s. There was a speed racer game, some some generic machine specific ones.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've always loved exercise games. WiiFit, RingFit, Let's Dance, a whole host of VR titles like Creed and RagnaRock. Exercise gaming should be it's own entire genre, and we should have game devs looking into ways to make getting off our lazy butts far more entertaining.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I lost 75 lbs and need to get back on the Wii fit so it will shrink my Mii down to normal

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cries in dance dance revolution

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's a treadmill at the gym where I work, you can choose to control a guy mountain biking through woods (speed dependent on you running obvi) and you can control a guy riding in an ox cart that explores a simple open world map and collect coins and upgrades. Got my lazy ass running for ever.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Prop Cycle needs to be brought back in a console game with an exercise bike interface, this cannot be that difficult?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Grocery store simulator, but it’s actually me going to the grocer

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Gamified exercise is probably the only way for me to enjoy exercise. Hell, the one afternoon I went airsofting I exercised more than I had the entire month before it, and I didn't regret one second of it. (As opposed to the month before it.)

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Maybe if they made the game distances actual distances (or decrease the scale) for walking and jogging between locations to then do play for other exercises. You could opt out of the walking jogging if you want (but don’t earn those points)

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There was an article in Men's Health a few years back where doctors found that people watching a slowed down recording of a trail while running on a treadmill actually improved more than those who watched a live speed version. It's surprising that more gyms don't offer this option as you could use it with cycling and rowing as well.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I like to pretend I'm piloting a mech suit running across a battle field when I use an elliptical machine

2 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 0

I watched Pacific Rim on the elliptical once, highly recommend. I'd crank that shit to Max resistance for the Jaeger scenes and pretend I was the Striker Eurekas

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Thats funny cuz I like to imagine im using an elliptical machine while I'm laying on my couch. Imagination is the best!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Need a MechWarrior VR headset to complete the experience

I’m looking forward to the day VR headsets are super light. I got some killer workouts from some VR games but at the cost of some neck pain :/

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Neck pain? Count yourself lucky. I ended up shearing a nerve bundle from the base of my spine (sciatica). Can't feel my right hip and foot anymore now. Some beatsaber tracks are just fucking inhuman.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

For me it was Gorn, Superhot VR, and Blade & Sorcery.

It was genuinely impressive how many people it got out of the house, who wouldn't even consider going for a walk otherwise.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Well yeah because it’s actually some fun motivation. Makes it much easier for people to get into doing things if they’re happy with doing it

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

gamified exercise like...sports?

2 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 4

Ohh! I was thinking "no not like that we want stats like int and str etc" then it would go to hell with so many patches but what if gyms started offering Lock Boxes? you get a few for every lap you do etc

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Yes, but also no. I don't find most popular sports interesting, but I used to stay fit with things like laser tag and paintball.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

those are also sports

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure I said that? Though "laser tag" isn't a sport, because there's not remotely a unified ruleset. Different systems work in completely different ways, and their tournaments run differently too.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No sports don't hit the same rewards. I don't want to experience casual sporting, nor do I want to be in a professional competition. I want something completely pointless I cam take too seriously. Something that is competitive, but without any sort of stakes whatsoever.

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'd like it to be as available as any game, there's some sports I like, but it's hard to get playing with enough people whom I enjoy their companionship. But it's easy as hell to get up and gather to play online, or do it anonymously otherwise. Also, these sports mostly rely on ability and being in a good shape to be good, while games are easier to pick up by anyone supported by progressions systems. The fun factor is important, and it seems like it didn't get exploited enough in exercising.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

... This game relys on you running fast to beat other people who are slower..

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wasn't really thinking about this one, but talking in a more general sense

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

but that's the point. Physical shape IS the progression system. Also there's tons of solo sports. Archery, weight lifting, running, golf.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's just the motivation for some people, it is clear that some extra help couldn't hurt for the ones that it really doesn't

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
