I am a manager at local chain of restaurants in the Chicago area. I was recently promoted and have been exhausted from the extra hours I've been clocking lately. I went from about 38 hrs on average to 50 hrs.

Today a detective came into the store asking for one of the other managers that works there, Ralph*. (*not his real name but it is what I want to do when I think about him so.... ) The detective mentions that Ralph has been terrorizing this girl for months now - dragging her into camera-free zones, touching her inappropriately, forcing her into our coolers, etc. Apparently, there was 'relationship' for a while but after a couple weeks she told him that she didn't want to do anything with him any longer and that it didn't seem appropriate. He didn't think he should stop and didn't. And that's when all the problems started at work. I had no idea any of this was going on. They both kept everything to themselves.

I felt really awful not immediately feeling bad for her. I'm upset that I wasn't able to be a reliable source of guidance. She was the sweetest girl with a crazy amount of work ethic for a 15 year old. And she quit her job because Ralph couldn't calm his ass down.

My boss called and told me that Ralph was going to be fired tomorrow as well as taken in for questions by the detective that was at our store. Which means, my boss and I have to split Ralph's shifts while the company searches for a new manager to fill the spot. And when my company 'searches' for someone they take their sweet time. So, at least a week of 60+ hrs maybe more.

I'm still wondering how I'm going to survive with the extra hours and questions from our staff. Maybe my anger will sustain me?

I just wanted to get this out. I've only told a few people and I can't discuss it with anyone at work. Imgur is usually the place I go to when I'm down. So, send me stuff. Funny. Sad. Music. Pictures. Whatever.

How could he do that to you??

Stuff, eh? Well, here's my favorite toast: In wine, there is wisdom. In beer, there is happiness. In water, there is bacteria. Cheers!

Do you even get paid any more?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

+1 just for not being another queef-tastic joke bear. And screw you if it is and I didn't get it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just don't send dicks. That's my job.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not cool, Ralph. Not cool.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's a really rough situation all around.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just think of the extra money you'll be earning.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

so, you're hiring?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Guess that's the gist of it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If ots any justification, you have extra hours, but she has to live with it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That make me feel extra bad. :(

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Welcome to life, sometimes 72 hour work weeks happen. Suck it up and get it done. Move on with life.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah. Just like bitching yanno?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dude. I work 60-70 hours a week between a High School and 4 hospitals. And, I have 3 kids. Hint-- exercise during lunch, eat while working.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

More power to you. Gotta be difficult.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

What is the LEAST popular musical instrument? The kiddie fiddle!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Ay, another person from Chicago. That's fuck up and a dick move. Do you know the age of the girl he was messing with?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

15

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends on whether you get paid by the hour!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Salary. So yay and nay.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

do you get over-time?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't believe so. Not sure yet actually.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you inappropriately touch another minor, you don't have to work there anymore and you already know somebody in prison to form a gang.

9 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 5

How would that even work? Graze their butt then beg them to report you?

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

Sounds like the best possible plan. Now to hire another minor...

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

It's fair to feel upset about getting shafted because of an asshole's actions. You shouldn't feel bad about bringing it up later, like 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 162 Dislikes 0

I feel like calling him a dick might work better in this sentence.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

talking amongst management "yeah Ralph was a real ass, not only did he screw with the girl he fucked my workload too" 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 0

Yeah it's fine to mention that later, when things have calmed down. It's not YOUR fault Ralph was a dick after all.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Good time to fight for a raise

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just got promoted, they'd laugh in my face.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Kinda ok to be pissed about the hours thing. And not your fault if you didnt know what was going on if no one said anything

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I just feel like I should have protected her somehow. :/

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cant fix what you dont know is broken :/

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I know. Dx

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If your anger feels misplaced it's because you're emotionally buffering how terrible the whole abuse thing is. Understanding that can help.

9 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 2

Trying to figure out how you could have spotted it is a kind of emotional negotiation, but it doesn't lead anywhere. Predators are stealthy.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Yeah, seems so.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I think you're going to be OK. Sad thing is the predators and victims are equally distributed among races, religions, and economic classes

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They're hard to predict individually. Corporate HR should have useful counseling for the whole store.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Would hope so.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ooo a Chicagoan. Damn though, why must idiots do that at work??

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wooop. Right? Why risk your job like that.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Why do people do that at Work? Why do they do it anywhere? She was 15 for crissakes.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, why not find someone older?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And consensual.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And consensual.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Most importantly.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A Police Officer came in and just told you about the shit Ralph was doing? Without ralph there? Just told you about these charges?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

He just mentioned why he was there and the severity of the accusations. Sure I didn't see first hand - could be false. But either way 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I'm not a lawyer but that just seems kinda illegal? To tell someone about someone else's possible charges? I could be wrong though.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

He didn't actually say, "Ralph is charged with...." He just said that there have been accusations and he would be taken in for questioning.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

shit isn't looking good for his career at the moment. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

ha yeah either way of legality I can dig that. This type of stuff sticks with you regardless of guilt

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

And NOW I want Portillo's.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

X) mmm. delicious.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sounds like you have a minor problem.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Was that a fucking joke? I'll admit I didn't get it a first...Nice one.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It is amazing what your body and mind can do I've routinely worked 60+ hours a week. When I used to clean the local football stadium 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I would put in 40 hours in 3 days, then take a day off to sleep and work my normal 40 hour job. It did get rough when there 2/?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2 home games in a row, but at that point it becomes a mental work out and as long as it is not long term, enjoy the overtime pay?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bruh why you gotta hate on a cool name?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sorry buddy. ;(

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am hurt but my feelings will recover

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Be strong. :(

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Delegation. If you give everybody a little more you have less to do.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

True, to a point. I'm pretty proficient at assigning tasks. My main problem is dealing with extra time spent at work. Dx

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Maybe get ahold of her and tell her Ralph is no longer employed there and see if she is willing to come back and see about a raise?

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 5

I wish! Hopefully after this all blows over she'll consider it.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Bad idea. Any HR person will tell you stay out if this, it is now a matter for the police and the courts.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Hm, yeah..

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's shitty.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

May seem shitty, but it's smart and the right thing to do. This ain't a prank, and this is the real world where people go to jail for this

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

And he deserves what he gets. But she didn't deserve that. I just don't see the issue of calling her back now that he is gone.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

But it's not over. It's a legal matter, not a personal one anymore.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

However, offering her a job and a raise can be seen as the company standing by her side, taking care of employees that have been wronged.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

It could also be seen as an admission of guilt and an attempt to forestall a sexual harassment suit against the company.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Guys I was just adding another viewpoint don't get your boxers in a twist.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Just trying to give you the benefit of hard won experience. In business, and life, what your heart says to do may not be the right thing.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I disagree. I would invite her back because it is the morally right thing to do. BTW, I'm a lawyer with some HR experience.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not likely, but if you are a lawyer, then you're not a good one. Until the matter is fully adjudicated you'd risk ruining the case or worse

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, I disagree on both counts.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And I stand by both judgments. Shall we go to trial? (You'll lose.)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, I disagree on both counts.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Once was enough, and wrong both times.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Glad he got busted. Five 12 hour days aren't that bad. Extra money, too.

9 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 4

That depends on the work you do. I couldn't interact with people for 12 hour days, day after day.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Managers tend to be salaried rather than by the hour. So no extra money, just hella overtime

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Managers tend to be salaried rather than by the hour. So no extra money, just hella overtime

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty glad too. If only they would do 12 hr days. Most likely going to be 6 10hr days. ;(

9 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

tell them to go fuck themselves

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's not too bad, you'll be fine. Set that extra money aside for a vacation

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've worked 2 jobs and 75+ hour weeks. It's not fun at all but you will prevail!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Woo. Look at you. :) Thanks for the confidence.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Only having one day off a week sucks, but I've pulled 72 straight in the bush. Hang in there, it'll pass!

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Fuck. Well, hats off to you! Thanks too. :)

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Thanks. Just about got divorced over that one though. Found a more reasonable job in town. Still get o.t. on weekends too. Trades jobs, yah!
