As an animator I can confirm this

Thank you. I'm sure a lot of us don't believe that those are real animators.

Doesn't studio Ghibli still do this? In the documentary everyone in the studio was hand drawing all day in their flip books.

Draw with your eyes, not your mind.

as an animator, i still do this. your whole body is a good reference, use it.

For extra enjoyment, read the two comic sequels written by Keno Don Rosa. They’re amazingly emotional.

And South Park's animators just do a lot of drugs for their excellent results.

IIRC, Bill Watterson mentioned how he was happy he worked in the privacy of his home for this very reason (Calvin's faces)

11 years ago | Likes 526 Dislikes 2

Also probably because he's kinda a recluse

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In reality, the sole purpose for his career was to justify his fear of the outside.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In animation classes we used to take turns acting so the others could observe for reference. Awkward as hell sometimes but super useful

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I knew it would be this picture before I opened it.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I once got in trouble with my parents for emulating Calvin in a school picture back in kindergarten. :D

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Nothing against new animators, but old school animation is so freaking amazing. So much respect for those guys

11 years ago | Likes 3377 Dislikes 11

As an animator myself, thats what got me into the art. The concepts they used back then we still use today

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You've really got to love something to work as hard as they did. If I had half the dedication I would be happy.

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Amazing really! So incredible to think that is where all these faces came from.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

my dream was to work as one growing up, so much respect for how they used to do it

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Was? Why not do some self study starting with some Glen Vilppu? Nothing feels better than gittin gud.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A Disney Book I own that was written by lead animators say there was +2500000 drawings in the classic movies

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I believe it

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No kidding! I tried it once. Twelve-ish frames of me going "how the hell did they do this"

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There are many videos of Disney's old school artists. Personal favorite was how the black cauldron was done but I can't find it. :/

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They truly spent all their time doing it. Now life is just one big distraction.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Since that "Disney rejection letter" all I can think about when seeing these is (1)

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

(2) that probably so many talented women got denied the chance to contribute.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

Girl in my class decided to try her luck with traditional instead of digital animation for the final project and regreted wholeheartedly :D

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Haha, I tried it once when I was in school. It's a very daunting task for someone new to animation

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The reality is that it goes with everything else--especially form and craft.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm currently studying classical animation. It's amazing but so draining. In my animation school everyone learns this till 3rd/4th year.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's awesome man. I haven't finished schooling but what I have done was draining yes, but still fun. Good luck!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You realize that new animators still do this, right? But use the references for different things other than drawings.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I had to do a reference shot of swinging around a light pole. So there I was at 9am outside in front of the neighbor's house bein' creepy.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think they're both amazing in their own way.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I would definitely agree

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And women. But they were rubbish at moving scenes, so they were only allowed to do static ones.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

What about new animaties utilizing traditional animation methods?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good for you man. Like @reignski said, whether you go for 3D or not, learning to animate traditionally is super important

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a 'new' animator. We still do this.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Yes, I'm aware new animators still use this. I didn't mean for it to sound like that. They just didn't have the advantages we have now

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

That is true. I've just seen so many people failing and giving up animating because they thought it was easy. All the principles still apply

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Exactly, you really have to love it. I did a couple years of school for it which I'm hoping to finish someday when I have the money

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Old school animators would normally draw the "golden poses', or the main moments of an action, and have lowly in-betweeners do all the (1/?)

11 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

Well back in old school times, the inbetweeners were apprentices and like all the top animators were once apprentices. It's not like today.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(2/?) hard stuff "in-between." Now with 3D animation the 3D software does a lot of the "in-betweening." So yes, they were extremely

11 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

(3/3) talented but didn't draw every single frame.

11 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

So you're saying that 3d software saved them a lot of money on unpaid interns?

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

The industry has changed so much since way back when. I'm saying we animators are standing on the shoulders of giants.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Only an amateur animator lets the software do the interpolation. If you work professionally, better set a key almost every frame.(argh, edit)

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Untrue for the most part, but it depends on the shot. It would be impractical to set a key on almost every frame due to time constraints.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I assumed the context was feature quality animation. Apart from holds (and those are also never still) you don't want floaty movement.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Knowing how to manipulate the f-curves is just as powerful and saves a lot of time.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Curves alone just don't allow much texture and interesting movement. Also IK needs a lot of refinement to get good arcs.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Uhm. No? The tweens are edited, but you don't NEED a key on every frame.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I can't comprehend how they could redraw the same images over and over almost exactly the same

11 years ago | Likes 183 Dislikes 1

they used cells. they would only animate the moving things. source: gdad had an authentic cell used from fantasia that only included a limb

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

People would have to have an uncontrollable love to enjoy that type of work; which is probably why old school animations are incredible.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Start with your main pose and then they use a thin paper over the top that you can see the main picture through

11 years ago | Likes 78 Dislikes 1

I mean, I understand HOW they do it, but that doesn't make it any less amazing to me.

11 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 0

Its pretty easy, yoh just draw it repeatedly: source : is a 2d animator

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They are called inbetweeners. The slave labour force that did the frames between the key poses that were done by the lead animators.

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

pure draftsmanship and lots of life drawing practice.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

a kind of tracing paper, pretty much.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same as we do it today; a bunch of underpaid and overworked interns:)
