In California, a group I was part of ensured that FD and EMT units had veterinary masks, so animals could be given O2 after smoke inhalation. It was awesome to know I helped do something good.
I hug my dog every day. And I tell him he is loved, and that he is safe, and that he is home. It's a mantra I've been telling him since rescue day 1. He understands. When he is scared, I just hug him and say it, and he takes a deep breath and relaxes.

She did get injured trying to escape, tore cranial cruciate ligament or cruciate cranial ligament, forget which order they're in. Tore the other one a year later. $10k surgeries each, but my expensive mutt is worth it and more and I'd pay it again.
