To clarify, not my review but found it hilarious. I'm female, don't work in tech & have had convos about OS - but gave no recommendations.

Also - upvoted everyone - this is the first time one of my posts has gotten any action at all in my 3.5 years of semi-lurking <3

But I do have those conversations.

It's not like Microsoft really gives people a choice anymore anyway.

3 Words: spyware.

"Dude you should check out this new operating system i discovered the other day. It's call windows. You should try it out."

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've recommended Windows 10 to friends and colleagues. Despite all the bitching (a lot just because it's something new) it's pretty good.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My computer had a forced windows 10 update(I never had the option to say no or later), it never booted back up. My hard drive was toast.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Try all the Linux distros I have and you might not think that anymore.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I need this guy to understand his experiences are not everyone else's experiences.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

He probably does haha

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah... they do...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've been asked at least 5 times in my life.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You would be surprised how often "What is your favorite operating system?" comes up. Not often, but I've been asked it before

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He's never met a Penguinista.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You've NEVER recommended a certain piece of technology to someone? This isn't the 1950s you know people do talk about this stuff quite often

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Hey man. How's your wife? How's your kids? How's your operation system doing?"

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Because if I recommend something tech-related, anything that breaks down for any reason suddenly becomes my problem.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I've spent a decent amount of time talking about differences between linux distros.

9 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 1

However most (somewhat tech savvy) people don't understand them.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can you help me install a Facebook? I really want to tweet on the Instant Gram.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Different Linux distros are worth discussing, the important thing to understand is that they are all Linux, just configured differently.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Everyone here saying they actually do talk about OSs w/ others, but are any of you REALLY ever gonna recommend Win10 over anything but Win8?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

you rascal you. 8 would have been fine without that metro garbage. Christ. Didn't look bad on their phones tho

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I feel like Linux guys do this all the time.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Never talking about an os with anyone? You live a sorry life my good sir

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Reminds me of when purchasing asked me to get a 2nd and 3rd quote for Microsoft licensing. We could go linux or Mac I guess...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

..you mean you could go GNU/Linux or BSD? You're complaining about MS pricing but Mac sounds like a good idea

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I recommended people NOT to install Windows 10 - Does that count?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Windows 10 is the Mac of windows OS: revoked usability so its more user friendly.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You've never discussed "not sure if I like Win 10, should have stayed with XP"

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

XP? MS-DOS 6.1 for ever!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You hang in the wrong circles.

9 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 3

No, I'm pretty sure that "Would not recommend Windows 10" is the right circle.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Clearly your friends are not Linux users. I've seen hour long conversations on Debian vs Ubuntu Vs Mint

9 years ago | Likes 104 Dislikes 1

I've barely used Linux but past the very obvious differences, I don't see any.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

add Arch and Manjaro to that list and you have me and my friend talking today

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

But they're the same fucking thing! Manjaro is just Arch with an installer and worse dev team!

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

no one talks about fedora anymore

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

We sure used to.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

what happened?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

aah, modern short conversations. Emacs vers vi used to go on for days.. ;)

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

VIM is for lunatics!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I didn't say vim.. that's more modern! ;)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fair enough!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What's there to discuss everyone is Debian is the god tier distro. Everything else is for plebs and capitalistic pigs

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

Maybe I don't just don't wanna spend three hours configuring my windowing system xp

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

The fact that you are using a GUI is disgusting.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Are you working solely through bash in a desktop environment? There are people who care about you man, you don't have to hurt yourself!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lol. I'm just stirring up trouble. Though on a daily basis, it's like 60% CLI and 40% GUI. 30% of that GUI is my phone.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

v

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

How all internet conversations are made

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also the fact that Windows 10 really does suck.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 4

y tho

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I gave Windows 10 a 30 day test and had more game issues than 30 months of Windows 7 as well 10 sabotaging itself twice.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hell, I never got Dragon Age: Origins to work under Windows 10, and after 24 hours and dozens of reinstalls I quit trying for a proper one.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because it decided to self install on my laptop, I cancelled it, it rebooted on its own and said there was no OS. Also the layout sucks.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

In W7 if I want a desktop shortcut to, say, Paint I open the start menu and start typing in "paint". When Paint shows up in the results

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I can click and drag it onto the desktop or right click and hit "add shortcut to desktop" neither of which work in W10.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

i just did what you're describing in Windows 10, I just had to open the file location first.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Exactly. It forces you into a pointless extra step. No part of Windows 10 should be inferior to Windows 7 but it is.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Instead, in W10, you have to add it to the start menu, then drag it onto the desktop, then delete the unwanted start menu shortcut.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I add stuff I use a lot to the taskbar, and I hate desktop icons

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As the family "tech guy", I get asked questions like this ALL the time.

9 years ago | Likes 525 Dislikes 5

O????M????G????!!! This speaks to me on a cellular level!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Suppoed to be "O[handclap] M[handclap] G[handclap]!!!" Emojis show as question marks, changing the tone of the comment.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same here. My mom didn't understand the concept of HDMI ports. She thought the cable from the DVR -had- to be in slot 2 to work.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My father and I regularly have these discussion. Especially as he's windows and I'm mac.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same, I've spent what feels like days talking about this to family members

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Maybe @Op's family has seen his work and are exploring other avenues for tech support.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It wasn't my review, just something I found amusing. I'm a girl. I don't have a tech job!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm still trying to get my family onto Linux.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But do they know about your username?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And you recommend Linux every time?

9 years ago | Likes 78 Dislikes 8

As a tech guy i would never recommend linux, id never hear the end of their problems with it.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I got my wife onto Linux and she had less problems than on Windows...now she needs Windows for her study and she complains constantly.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

For a random family member who wants familiar wimp interfaces? What a horrible recommendation.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Well its not that windows is a bad choice, besides i dont think grandma will learn how to use linux

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Elementary OS is pretty idiot-proof, I've found. Like a feature-starved OSX.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was about to say, my dad wants me to build a computer for him and he wouldn't be happy if I just installed Linux because it's "better".

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Get your shit together nana, all you have to do is check your dependencies and recompile the kernel! This is basic stuff.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I installed ubuntu in my grandmas pc when she needed to change from xp. And she asks me too fix the tv when someone changes the channel. 1\

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I would say that in is most cases ubuntu is simpler than windows. 2\

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Psssst, hey kid? want to try FreeBSD?
