My 10 year sobriety coin, for you

My 10 year coin, for you

I've seen a few posts about people getting clean/sober here, which was honestly a really heartwarming surprise. Even more surprising was all the love and support I saw those newcomers getting from the community. It convinced me that I should become a part of.

So this is for you beautiful spirit warriors on the path to freedom. This is for you to hold on to and come back to. If you're doing great, if you're struggling to keep your head above water, it's WORTH IT! YOU are worth it!

Ten years ago today I got sober. I've been elated beyond belief, I've endured bone crushing self-loathing and self-pity. Because of the community I've surrounded myself with, and because I listened to people even when it made me so friggin mad at them that I hated them, because I took the actions I thought made sense, and the ones I thought had nothing to do with "my problems," I've made it through it all.

And the joy I have found I am now sending to you. I am thinking of all of you right now, every post, every comment. I hope this is something you can save and come back to when the going gets tough. You are not alone. Whenever you read this we are together, I am holding your hand, giving you a hug, telling you it's going to be ok, it's already ok. You are loved, even when you feel impossibly wretched, you are loved.

I see the real you, the bright, glimmering light of awareness that lies behind your thoughts and feelings. The truth of you, that you have value beyond your wildest comprehension, and by continuing to put one foot in front of the other you will get to see more and more of that infinite worth with every day.

I think I'm supposed to pay a tax for certain posts, and even if this is a tax-exempt post, have a Henry anyway. He loves you even more than I can.

FP: Wow! I am grateful that so many people who may feel alone might see this and find hope. As I don't want this to be about internet points, I'm making another post for the downvoting. I love talking about recovery, if you have questions, pm me!

As a stranger to you who has lost too goddamn many beautiful people to heroin, I'm proud of you. We love you.

I remember Mel Gibson accurately, and he didn't say that.

Something about that coin is making me hot and bothered. Maybe the color. Maybe the smoothness

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yw! Remember, progress does not look like a straight line. It looks like a stock market graph.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hang in there man! I use to hate hearing this: but "it gets better". And it really does! If you need someone to talk to, message me!

Starting a sober journey with a friend today. Nice job, it's not easy.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

16 years since my last drink

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Stopped drinking at 18yrs old right out of high school, (I was that drunk guy). Relapse at 38yrs old until today.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

We all hit those rough spots. You'll get thru this too. I just know it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Honest question: is it still considered 10 yrs if you've had a relapse? Or does one night of struggle reset the clock? I've always wondered.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In the substance abuse 12 step programs (AA, NA, CA, MA, etc.) relapse resets your time. Even one sip of wine. I do not believe it 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

resets your recovery necessarily though. One has still learned much about the actions to take, and the principles of recovery. 2/2

My dad hit 16 the month before he passed away. Keep going @OP. He'd be proud.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This literally is making me tear up. Sending you a big hug. Thank you!

:)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

May i ask. What made you quit?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

My life wasn't going anywhere, I was stuck. Eventually I reached a point where I saw only increasing loneliness and suffering for myself.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you get you get to keep the coins from every year ? Or do you exchange them ?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There are also plastic "chips" for 30, 60, 90 days, 6 months, etc. Each group determines if they hand out chips. Some people return those.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Coins are like souvenirs, your friends/family get you them. Some meetings (each group is autonomous) give them out. I've got all of mine.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the response ! Always wondered about that

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Great question!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Proud of you stranger. The only thing I've done consistently for ten years is own a pair of shorts I refuse to throw out.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Much like drinking, I learned it from my Dad.

My first thought was the Deathly Hallows.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In all seriousness though @OP , well done

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Having just finished Gravity Falls, this was my first thought too. ;)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Now THAT is a cool coin! Congrats to your mum!

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

they dont sell any of those coins in my country :/ and somehow they are unbelievably expensive on ebay

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What country?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Uh, do you know the middle eastern country with a president that doesn't want his photo to seen on the internet?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not specifically, but now I'm intrigued to learn more. I'm guessing it would be hard for me to send you one?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's Turkey. Hehehe. That would be an awesome gift but as you have said it would be very hard to send one. But let me know /1

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I won't comment on the post. It's AWESOME. I will comment on "To thing own self be true" That phrase actually means 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"care only about your self interests" once you view it in the lens of the play, and the character saying it. It's about being selfish. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But in any case, it's definitely cause to pause, and question it. Never take anything at face value without further inspection.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Yo son, this dude is not right in the head. Don't follow him to your demise."

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have come to understand that it actually means "be honest with yourself." Polonius is warning his son about the unstable Hamlet. Like...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Polonius is a self interested prick/idiot the entire play. Keep that in mind when measuring this. He spends the entire play being 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A terrible person, and making bad statements. I never got why people thought he developed wisdom for 10 seconds.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Haha, he is a nonce for sure. It's pretty gratifying when he gets skewered.
