You have no idea how many 911 butt dials we get everyday..

Jul 11, 2017 12:57 AM

From a 911 operator, if we don't hear apperant signs of distress and you don't press any buttons to signal that you are on the line, we assume it was a butt dial. We will call you back and leave a message if you don't answer but we won't send any help to you

Front page edit: thanks guys! Also to clarify, this only applies to cell phone calls or calls from unverifiable addresses. If we know you need help we will send someone to the area where your phones location is showing us. If we hear nothing of concern and think it's a pocket dial we won't send anyone. This could vary by department and country/region. Cell phones have caused an explosion of accidental 911 calls, most departments don't have enough officers to send to all of the 911 open line calls they get. Just do something to alert us that the call was intentional!

Beep.beep.beep..beep....beep....beep..beep.beep.beep

I was told that if you call 911 and can't talk, you should bang your phone against something.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Flipphone FTW

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Like SOS in morse code or just mash all the buttons?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you want some useful information 112 is the universal dial for emergency services in Europe.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We'll run subscriber checks on the phone if there's anything of note on the recording. Otherwise we call it back until we're satisfied there

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

isn't a problem. We don't get rid of the call just because we "think" it's a misdial.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not true. I buttdialed 911 while mowing a neighbors lawn. An officer found me mowing the back lawn, addressed me by name and

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Asked me if I'd meant to dial in. Said no, apologized, and nothing came of it

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Check out the smart911 site as well. It allows you to link important info to your cell # and only shows if you dial 911

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

morse code for SOS: short short short, long long long, short short short.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't bother with morse code

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a cop, they send us no matter what...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or Moss code SOS? · · · — — — · · · (3 short as "S" ,3 long as "O")

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

in the UK, if you add "55" (to 999, our emergency number) the operator understands it means you are unable to talk.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

According to the comments you are wrong or your department is the only one in the u.s. to not send an officer.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My butt was in distress after I ate some mexican food the other night. It is a loose cannon so I can't always control it's shenanigans.

This is one of the eeriest pieces of audio. I couldn't imagine being an operator

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

One time we got a phase 2 911 hang up and we're trying forever to find it. Finally figured out the phone company hooked up an abandoned 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

house without a phone to 911 service as part of some weird BS that allowed them to con money out of the county. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

3/3 Suppose I should clarify that since it had no phone the system would glitch somehow and occasionally "dial" 911.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Um, this isn't true for Canada. You dial 911, and hangup, someone still comes. It happens a lot as byproduct of the 'dial 9' to get out.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Does 911 have text ability yet?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In some cities yes

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I believe in the UK you press 55, which is SS for Silent Solutions.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Correct, although we don't bother too much about it in all honesty.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There should be a text-capable line for the deaf or people who cannot use the voice line for some reason.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There is, we use it when we get open lines

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

oh cool, i've asked police officers before and was told you need text to speech programs, which sounds dangerous if you need to be quiet.1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2/2 possibly though they didnt know for some reason or another, cause that seemed like a huge oversight to me

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My buttons don't make noises that people on the line can hear

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Then you need a new phone.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But surely calling someone back might alert an intruder/murderer/rapist to the person's location?

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Doesn't matter, the priority is the persons safety. You must establish their whereabouts

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ahh, I suppose.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is it possible to text 911? Thinking of people who are deaf or hard of hearing

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Some places do have text for 911. We have it where I live, deaf users being one reason, domestic violence another.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

People who are deaf have a program called TTY on their phones. We always try to communicate with that on open lines

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Interesting, thank you!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

or they have actual teletypes

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

tap out SOS on the keys, that would really get the message across. ( . . . .. .. .. . . . )

8 years ago | Likes 210 Dislikes 25

or ... _ _ _ ...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Man, hand in your morse code certificate.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

anything in threes can indicate a problem i dont remember where i heard it from tho so if im wring tell me

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You don't know how to do dashes? ... _ _ _ ...

8 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 3

Uh, I think the point is to make it for beeps on the phone.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 8

how do you think they originally used morse code? its just a bunch of beeps. dashes are long beeps

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Can you though? Depending on the phone, that might not work. It might just make multiple beeps if you hold it down as it inputs multiple #.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

usually it quick beeps then a beep and a pause then a very long pause for end. or code to repeat message. or end code.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Those aren't dashes though... That's and underscore. It would look like • • • - - - • • •

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

• • • / - - - / • • • / can't forget the spaces between.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

many tuch tone phones have set pulse lengthes, thus i use 2 quick short to represent a single long tone

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

isn't it ... . . . ... ?

8 years ago | Likes 101 Dislikes 2

is it the pause or the tone, cause the tones are a set length on many phones, so i doubles up the middle to make it represent long tones.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup. Three short, three long, three short.

8 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

Learned that from an old S.O.S dish scrubber commercial.Only thing I learn from modern day commercials is that Terry Crews is a god damn god

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

"911 what's your emergency?" ( 8=======D )

8 years ago | Likes 158 Dislikes 1

*presses keypad* Ta-ke..me.to..fu-nk-y..to-wn....awww man, I'm Soo high.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

"Do you require assistance?" "80085"

8 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 0

Yeah...just calling 911 will get someone sent. Source - I'm stationed at a dispatch center

8 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 1

You guys use MPDS as well?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My jurisdiction gets about 95% of calls from cell phones. You're definitely not getting a response if you don't say your location.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fire Chief here; we get sent on abandoned 911 calls all...the...time...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We don't have enough officer to send out to all of the hang up we get

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Huh, I thought that all calls were checked out regardless. I get this only applies to cell calls but that's kinda scary. Especially since

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most people I know use a cell and don't even have home phones anymore

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've butt dialed a ton of times and never had anyone come so I think it might depend on where you are

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

there is a problem with my cell that allows for me to butt dial and hang up over and over while walking

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I do that so much

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In my county, if it's a cell phone we only have to call back once and we don't send anyone if there is no verified address.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Here if the cell phone tower it comes off is in the same city as the phones registered address, an ambulance is sent as a welfare check

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So, this only pertains to cell calls, that makes more sense

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What country?

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

They said county, so that is probably in the USA.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Is there a fake pizza order code? Extra large cheese, half pepperoni means domestic etc?

8 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 4

Large pie no cheese extra anchovies

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The police don't use codes or codewords when dealing with the public.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I fee like pretending to order pizza would just make the beatings worse.

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

Not if the assailant is hungry

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Peas and Mayo.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

A true call for help

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What if it also has pineapple?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Does it also have ham? Cause that's fine. When there are more ingredients and *then* pineapple, I'm less fine with it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope. Just let them know you are seriously desperate for a pizza. Act strange. They know.

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

"I need a none pizza, left beef AND I NEED IT RIGHT NOW"

8 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

And when the pizza guy shows up, open the door and start clapping!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well ask if you meant to dial 911, you answer yes and we will get you help

8 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 0

My phone has its location spoofed, can got always locate the source of the call regardless of mobile phone location settings?

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

We don't use GPS

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Generally yes. The kind they use to find your phone would be cellular tower triangulation. 1\¿

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Worst case they know what towers you are between. Best case I think they can get some pretty specific location out of the connection ²\²

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No. You can't. You can ping the phone which gives you a 500 metre circle. Normally you just get the bounce off the nearest mast

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Here's another problem. I don't have service on my phone, purely running on WiFi. Am I screwed?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

(1)Maybe it's different for each department but the department I work for, if a dispatcher doesn't get an answer on call

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

(2) back, an officer is sent just to make sure no one is in trouble or need of assistance.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Same here and I'm in Scotland.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As someone who works in sales in area code 912, I dial 911 on accident like once every few months. Police always show up 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

South east Georgia represent!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ayeeeee!!!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Maybe it's different protocol but they almost always call back and when they don't get an answer, police...2/2

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Likely they have a different policy or if you are calling from a landline they have your address already & it's easy to send someone to you

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Definitely a landline with an addy.. that makes sense
