A gorgeous looking, beautifully acted, beautifully shot, exhilarating historical drama/war/action/romance movie. That might seem like a lot to unpack - but this movie gets better and better as it builds to its epic conclusion.
With a transcendent oscar winning soundtrack that is quite simply one of the best ever put to film - it hauntingly reminds you that we are seeing the last breaths of Native American culture as untainted by European influence and decimation.
A masterful performance for Daniel Day Lewis (goes without saying really.) With Madeline Stowe as so much more than a typical love interest, excellent, in a role that should have made her a mega-star, but sadly never did.
Is it historically accurate. No. But it doesn't matter. Michael Mann has directed a 90s masterpiece. Unfortunately during one of the most impressive eras in Hollywood history and thus falling short of some of the acclaim it might have otherwise achieved.
But seriously. That soundtrack.
6/7 - Excellent
(I wanted to talk about some films that have sadly been somewhat forgotten. If you like these, please let me know and I'll keep posting.)

So many great moments. Heyward’s bargain and the final fights on the cliff are just gut wrenching.

Hates it. The real hero of the movie sacrifices himself to save his cheating-ass wife.

Decimation means 1 10th - as in 10%. It was much worse than that.

I’ve never given this movie the attention it deserves - I will after reading this. I’d love to see more recommendations/reviews!

First R rated movie I ever saw. Still one of the best.

I loved this movie. And I didn’t mind that it wasn’t super historically accurate. James F. Cooper wasn’t fond of Native Americans, so...

...the movie’s portrayal was a way to take the edge off the original novel. IMO

The violin is so epic in the theme.
