Aside from being absolutely gorgeous, with two story dark wooden arches, this is also the largest library in all of Ireland. It serves as the country’s copyright library, where a copy of all new books and periodicals must be sent when they apply for copyright protection. The library is also home to the famous Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript created by Celtic monks around the year 800.

The library smells like old books and pipe smoke. It's glorious

Any medical books far in the back I can look at? You know...for stuff.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Probably- but you'd be better off heading to St. Stephen's Greens and checking out the college of surgeons... much older medical school

My dad found his ancestor in a book there. As such he is an Irish citizen of New Zealand birth, and I'm able to apply as a brit.

Libraries are so pretty

i don't care if they are old and raggedy, as long as they have books and people read them.

This is on the "before I die" list to see. If I can swing it, getting my PhD at Trinity would be a dream come true.

Still not as interesting as the Dutch Parliament!

I love this library! The old-book smell in there is fucking amazing.

Shhhh !

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did you also post the Durch Library? Cool stuff

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For those of you thinking about Hogwarts, some scenes were actually filmed in this very library

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Except when you actually visit, you have to fight your way through crowds of tourists to actually see anything.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I went this summer and there were probably 10 other people in there with me.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Get ready to use your elbows if you actually want to see the Book of Kells.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I can almost spell the books

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I got to see this when I went to Ireland. I would've killed for a chance to take a picture from the second floor.

When I see all these nice places, I almost automatically think " Hogwarts". Am I the only one?

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 5

Yes! I've been there before and it totally made me think of Hogwarts :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some Harry Potter scenes were actually filmed here. It's in Dublin.

can someone please explain why there are two corridors of ropes? Is that the only place in here you're allowed to walk?no using the benches?

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

The ropes weren't there when I went...the middle part was completely open, while the bookshelves and second floor were closed off.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It keeps you in the middle and from children/inattentive adults from knocking over the busts or going through the (rather delicate) books

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

yeah but there's clearly a dude walking between the ropes, not down the middle. sidenote: I'm willing to bet the busts are secured down

excellent, this makes much more sense. Maybe the secondary rope is the aisle for employees?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My mom called it hell. All the books in the world and they were all behind bars and couldn't be read

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Visit your local library some time- or better- your university library... you'll see why they don't trust random people

Went to Southern Ireland for my honeymoon and got to see this. Incredible. Beautiful country, beautiful people. +1

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 6

It's Ireland. Just Ireland.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I know! Sheesh.

Imgur: where giving a nice compliment on X turns into a philosophical debate on what X is , along with multiple downvotes. Love it!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You obviously didnt come to dublin

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nothing philosophical about it. You were just corrected.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Isn't it Northern Ireland and Ireland? Although yes, I understand Dublin is quite south

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yes, I understand the difference. Should have said republic. Must be a US slang term. Sorry!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No worries, I'm just a Dutch guy that went there for a while, seems others where a bit less nice, sorry about that! You had best intentions

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup thats just called Ireland.... or the republic.... south is cork and we dont like cork

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 2

Metal screw off wine bottles are tacky though.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Rebel Cork!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I've heard Cork is like the Texas of Ireland.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Pretty accurate description. Does that make Kerry the Alabama of Ireland? Or would that be Leitrim?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In the geographical or fucking your sister kind of way?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Kerry seems like the Florida of Ireland I think

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ya that fits better, this is a fun game.
