I'm afraid the USA is really just devolving into the default state of society, autocratic tyranny. We probably all just suffer a bit from the delusion that this might bring people of quality to the top. The emergence of virtuous autocrats might happen from time to time, but the survivorship bias from our history lessons deceives us about what the baseline looks like. In fact, there is mostly just ruthlessness, chaos and corruption. Good governance is not needed to gain power.

That's a good insight. Democracy has been a fairly successful attempt at mitigating the worst excesses, though reliance on the rational, deliberative capacity of a population has always been the most glaring weakness, a failure mode we've just provided a master class lesson in. Autocracy is no solution, revolutionary autocrats come to power by, if anything a less meritocratic process and succession is almost always a shit show.
