My dad, heading off to work in his 1957 Dodge Regent (Canadian model).
Toronto, summer of 1958.
Some call this a "Plodge" because it's basically a Plymouth with the front end of a Dodge when compared to the original U.S. designs.

Fun fact cars had the wings they did to evoke the planes of WW2 to try to uptick sales because of the war effort

Even then, no footpaths

"Every morning, round about dawn, you could hear turn that motor on. By the time I got up, he was gone."

Amazing car!! And a great memory to have.

There was colour back then?

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yeah, pretty uncommon for home movies though. I don't think I've ever known anyone else that had color movies as old as my folks'.

If the front half is a Dodge and the back half is a Plymouth, shouldn't it be called a Dodmouth instead?

What a stupidly oversized car. Its still cool and I'd still have one.

Lol, carpenter actually, but still.

I would've guessed some kind of construction job, judging from the hat and the lunchbox. My dad would've been 21/22 years old at the time.

ah good ol leaded gasoline...

Toronto used to be so nice

I mean, it still is, kinda. It's just cripplingly expensive now.

It's wonderful if you had generations of people who lived and worked in Canada creating wealth. If you're a newcomer or your family didn't save for future generations, it is terribly expensive and life can be a struggle.

Tons of areas still look literally exactly like this. The trees are bigger and maybe sidewalks have been put in, but that's it.

Once upon a time

Took two litres of gas to leave the neighborhood.

Suddenly cuts to black and white. "And that was the last they ever saw of him. Welcome back to unsolved mysteries." But I think your dad's car is really cool.

Love pillarless coupes

Me too, 100%.

This footage seems odd. Almost AI generated. Though I might just be tired.

It's 100% legit from my parents' home movies. Had them digitized close to 20 years ago. Might look weird from whatever processing happens when uploading?

I just realized there are no rear view mirrors on this aircraft carrier!

I think it's well forward on the left front fender. The inside mirror on these was mounted to the dashboard for some reason.

O man did he buy that house for 10k? It must be worth millions now!

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I think it was closer to 15 lol... but yeah, worth a little more these days.

That's awesome, I made a post about my Canadian Dodge as well! /gallery/1946-dodge-survivour-carmeet-lVcXTNY

Good man. Two doors.

Yup, he always stuck with 2 door cars. Even after I came along.

It was so goofy how American manufacturers had to sell "unique"/"bespoke" models in Canada... essentially just swapping badges and grills.

Often they were because of what the Canadian factories had for equipment or for specific Canadian traffic laws.
For example, we never got the dodge lancer here. Instead, the valiant remained its own make until 1963 and our 62 valiant has unique trim without any sign of being a Plymouth. In 1964, we didnt get all the dies for the valiant so it was a dart with the front panels from the 64 valiant. More recently the surburu wrx I think had a Canadian market rear bumper and diffuser for safety

They had some of them better wipers and better heating systems. My uncle owned a Studebaker truck like that.

Using up left over parts?

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Honda and Toyota still do it with Acura and Lexus

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And fenders! I think I once read something about Chrysler of Canada requesting these different offerings but without an increase in cost.

What music would he be listening to?

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I would love to make my dad sound hip for the time, but he really wasn't a music guy.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yea same with mine. I was a later life baby, so mine would be listening to the Mills Brothers or just the morning talk radio.

cars from the 50s were lit

As nice as this car looks, they were poorly built.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love how massive they are. Upgrade everything mechanical and it's glorious.

I've always been paranoidly terrified at the thought of slaming into one of those huge ship's wheels, cars from that time had, in a high speed collision lol

They were beastly. I miss my '79 Cordoba. Talk about a land yacht. Room for 3 full adults in the trunk.
