Joaquin Phoenix is just Gary Oldman acting. Always has been.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

did he ask “do I have to go up?”

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It's a French festival, so ofc it's going to be in French. That said, i think that the Olympics had to be in English, French, and the home language is stupid.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

They didn't say his name in French, though, snap out of it Arthur.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

He is Pedro Almodóvar it's an Spanish film director, it's well known in Spain, and have a great success, he speak Spanish, English and French (at last), and I think he said the first name in Spanish.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

His first name is Spanish, it's pronounced hwɑːˈkiːn.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, is pronounced this way https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EecgsR5ZaQM

Is Will Smith on the jury here?

As Voltaire himself remarked: "Bof" *shrug*

Almodóvar is Spanish, but thanks for playing

Different country presenting an award in its national language... not sure why that's a reason to not like every single person in that country lol. Pedro's French was a bit hard to understand, but who cares? Cool that he tried if you ask me.

I think at time of filming, JP was the same age as Napoleon was at the end of his reign, so not too crazy a casting

It's like if they insisted on doing the Nobel prize all in Swedish.

2 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 6

I love the implicit argument of “it’s supposed to be international, so why don’t they speak my language?”

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 6

I would be terrified and probably very confused if I ever saw something that could speak every single human language at once...

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We would never.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

...But you should. Without any prior announcement.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It would be funny to do it once, for fun. I can see the Kingie doing it, actually, starting in Swedish as a joke. Well, maybe not, not at those functions, but the way he is when he's at scout camps, I can definitely see him doing it.

To his defense, my native language is french and i understand him correctly but for someone that it's not his native language it could be really hard. French is not easy to learn

What is a French person's favorite videogame console? The Nintendo Oui

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Why didnt anyone tell me French George Lucas was hosting this year?

2 years ago | Likes 430 Dislikes 2

I don't have to tell you what my counterparts are doing.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

American dumb-ass here. Before I unmuted, I legit thought it was George Lucas. I'm sorry 😔

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Pedro Almodóvar is Spanish, and he also speaks French with a very thick accent

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

It’s not Lucas, he clearly has a chin

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pedro almodovar is a Spanish director and screenwriter who has some AMAZING MOVIES. My favourites are, “talk to her9 (Halla con Ella), Everything about my mother ( Tudo sobre mi madre), and Return ( Volver). Halla con Ella is specially poignant and fun.

2 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 2

Fun fact: "Schorsch" (spoken like Shorsh) is an (East) German nickname for Georg

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That guy is definitely not French, just speaking French.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Isn't that Pedro Almodovar?

2 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

OP for sure an American.. how dare an event in another country be in that country's language. So rude when everyone doesn't switch to English when an English is is present.

2 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 13

But English is the 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢 𝘧𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘢. And, since it is — therefore — the "French language", surely that means they should be talking it in France? /s

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

A. Im from Amsterdam. B. Its an International event you donut.

2 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 7

Yeah really not sure why this is so upsetting. It's a French award. Of course it's presented on French.

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 3

To be fair, his French is VERY hard to understand, and that's coming from a French native.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 5

Yeah but to tbf when announcing the award and the only words you can distinguish are your name I think it's safe to say that you are the winner.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The Nobel Prize Summit is held in Sweden but they still speak English because it is an international event and way more people speak English (including many non-Americans) than Swedish. It's also why all international flight use english for air traffic control.

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 11

That's all well and good in matters of safety and science, where the inherent underlying goal is standardization of norms and uniformity of ideas; if it were feasible pure mathematics would be the language used. In Art and Entertainment, diversity is not just paramount, but defines humanity. To suggest a different culture quash their own language at their own event on their own land is as obliviously tone deaf as complaining you can't find a hamburger in New Dehli.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

If it were for a French event for French films by French film makers then I would 100% agree that French is appropriate. But it is an international event and most international events speak English, not because it is American or British centric but because it is what most people attending the event will understand. It prevents exactly the situation above where the people attending have no clue what is going on because they don't speak the language. It would be like me only offering (1)

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 7

(2) Hamburgers at an international event with a lot of Indian people attending just because "that's what we eat here". Speaking just french to an international audience, many of them not American or British that have learned English specifically so they can communicate more easily internationally, is the same to me.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 6

Oh, are you an American and you don't like French people because in France they speak French? Seriously??

2 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 10

Be reasonable, French people have a different word for *everything*

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 19

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=q_8amMzGAx4 y’all suck at this

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

English can be understood through tough thorough thought though.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Reasonably, the French word for "everything" is "tout".

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Exactly! I'm from Canada and can think of at least 10 way better reasons to hate the French than the language! Just kidding of course, <3 Quebecois!
