My brother has served 8 out of 10 years in prison. He is getting out for good behavior possibly this month. I honestly wish they would keep him in there 5 more years (he is very violent). When we was younger i was very very close to him he was my best friend, but he wanted to be involved with gangs, drugs, and robbing people. When i decided i didnt want to live in that lifestyle anymore i wanted him to drop that life with me. He plainly looked at me and said "fuck you lil bitch i dont need you around me" so i walked away thinking he will figure out that these people in the gang will never have his back like his family. That never happened, he thinks i abandoned him because a few days after he told me that "he dont need me around" he was shot multiple times in the chest, back, leg, arm, and almost got him in the head. In the hospital my entire family prepared for the worst untill the doctor said he will make a full recovery and its a miracle he is alive. The bullets missed his heart and lungs by centimeters. My family and i are relieved because we think he would definitely be done with that stupid lifestyle that almost killed him. !!NOPE!! He learned absolutely nothing so that exact same year the police set up a sting to get my brother in the act of selling drugs needless to say they got him. Again my family thanks he will learn a lesson from his mistakes. We are wrong again he is being even more violent in prison so his sentence gets extended to 10 years. After a few years of no contact my mother wants us to talk. It didnt go well lots of screaming and cursing thats when he informs me that he absolutely hates me and wishes death on me. So a few more years after me cutting contact with him I progressed my career bought a house and eventually want to start a family. My mom lets me know that he is coming home and she wants me to be there to greet him when he gets here. I dont think thats is going to happen, also he is going to stay with my parents for a while so he can get things going in his life so it looks like i wont se him or my mom for a long.

Thanks imgur for letting me vent a bit sorry if the story was all over the place

Woah fp action thanks imgur for all the support i definitely will keep you guys updated

Fuck that, stay away. Your parents are idiots, I know I have a set like them and a drug using sister similar to your bro.

If he’s under 40 he’ll go back. After 40 it seems to kick in that kind of life sucks and they’d better change. Good luck, protect yourself.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Been down that road with a family member. Hide yo kids, hide yo wife...no seriously, things will end up missing.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I don't think you should be there when he is there. You have a family to think of now. If he gets triggered, he may take it out on them.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He’s trying to manipulate you. Don’t put up with it. He doesn’t hate you. He doesn’t love you. He just sees you as a mark that he knows well

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

His Parole Officer is overworked/underpaid; be honest and friendly with her/him, inform them of your concerns.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

At least one person in your family has sense. Your brother is damaged goods and blood ties do not absolve him of the garbage he is.

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 3

His gang affiliation wont stop once paroled. Your parents are blinded and will have hardships in the near future. Stay away.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

2/2 Lived this with a cousin. This type of felon rarely changes due to institutionalization and inability to conform to society.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You're in no way obligated to see him anymore. You've gitta look out for yourself & your future plans.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Stay away from him

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Personally as much as it would make your family angry you need to distance your self not to get hurt. If he reaches out then make contact.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Good luck my friend I wish you the best, hopefully your brother will be a better person.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If he hates u then I hate him. So there.

Awww. Me too!

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

And me too damit!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Your parents might release where you live to your brother, just a heads up

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Release hell, chances are his new address is somewhere in their house & he'll find it.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

"Iv waited 8 years to see you, little brother. Don't worry, your family died quickly"

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Don't see him. Give him a chance to prove to you he's changed, but he let you and your family down more than you let him down.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

I'd argue that OP didn't let anyone down

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's on him to show you that he's worth having in your life.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

If you introduce him to Imgur, you will make him a better man

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Not so sure about that one. Plenty of toxic people on here

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Former inmates always find a way to become prisoners again. Don't worry, he won't last long until he will be locked up again.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

If getting shot multiple times won’t set you straight, little else will. Prepare for disappointment and lock away anything of value.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I appreciate that ill make sure i do that

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You’re welcome. Also, really sorry you and your family are going through this. Can’t be easy, but you know we’re all here for you!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

OP I'm sorry this happened. Sometimes people get lost. I hope you can forgive him anyway.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

My brother, after being given ~10 chances to settle down, finally did so. Don't just cut off any chance of him coming around

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

How many years did that 10 chances spand????

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Around 6-8 years

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If I were you I'd keep my distance too no matter what others will say, so don't feel bad about it. Your life and happiness comes first

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

You made the right choice to stay away from someone toxic and dangerous. If he's changed, you'll see it through actions, not words.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Stay away. Most family isn't blood.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Reminds me if my brother. In and out of jail for the last 15 years. Fuck em. They choose there life. Don't get drug down with them

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Did you just use 'drug' as the past tense of 'drag'?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well it does appear that way. Proof reading is important

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Institutionalized. Predatory. Just when you start to feel safe around him is when he will strike. That’s all he’s known in there. Be careful

8 years ago | Likes 99 Dislikes 3

100% this, he WILL emotionally and mentally control/abuse those around him aka OPs parents, cause that's what he has done in gang and prison

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Some folks are naturally bastards. Not the environment's fault.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

True but if you put a natural bastard into that environment, they don't tend to improve. They tend to get much, much worse.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Make sure all your insurance is up to date in case he steals from you. Make sure your locks are good. If your parents have a key to your 1/

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

house, get it back from them or change the locks. Set your boundaries and keep them. Your mom can always come to visit YOU, but if she 2/

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Dear Lord YES! Change the locks! I honestly did not even think of that!

Wish I could give you an extra upvote for the Whose Line reference. :D

tries to guilt you into seeing your brother, shut it down. Boundaries are healthy to set and KEEP. /3

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb. The family you choose is more important, save yourself from toxic relatives

8 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 4

Except for his brother’s gang

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

What?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

His brother chose the gang over his family, now he’s in jail

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

I always hnng when I see someone use the 'blood is thicker than water' anecdote correctly.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 3

Actually, people only started claiming that recently, there are no known historical sources that say that was the original.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Do not let that toxicity back in ur life or in ur house, now that u r on track. Do not let ur mom pressure u either. U owe him NOTHING! 1/

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

2/ Just because u see n know truth about him & tried to get him out-u did everything right. Dont sacrifice ur life just 4 family peace!!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Had me worried for a moment, cause I am in fact releasing 3 inmates at 12:01am on tonight's shift. But this doesn't sound like my offenders

8 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 1

work stories plz

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Why do you release them in the middle of the night?

8 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

Jail break

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Probably to not draw a lot of attention

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

I too am curious about this

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Me too

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wonder if it's because they are serving a sentence that ends on a certain day. The earliest they could be released is 12:01am that day.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

As of 12:01 am the day after your sentence ends you are technically free.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

This is the correct answer

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Guard your parents valuables cuz they will disappear. Find out his parole officer keep him up to date. Good luck.

8 years ago | Likes 1607 Dislikes 10

I’d even argue to change all locks, just in case what he retrieves of his belongings upon release includes a key.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I dont think telling him to rat on the gang affiliated super violent brother that hates his guts is very good advice lol

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Some people really haven’t lived. You’re exactly right, ratting gets you nothing, but potentially hurt. Just stay as far away as you can.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This should definitely be higher

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

If your parents have a key to your place, ask for it back or change the locks.

8 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

@op this^

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No my parents live 2 hours away with no key to my home

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

No need to scare the kids or anything, but best make sure you're entire immediate family is in the loop. No letting relatives in unannounced

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This. Once a thug, always one. My step brother was the same way, stole my dads heart meds, stole booze, begged money from his mom.

8 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 3

Often the parents will cover, too. They think they can help him get back stable by letting him take just a bit more.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I disagree, people should be given second chances. But in OP's case, his brother was given several already and destroyed them.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I disagree, people can change. Unfortunately they usually don't.

8 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 1

Yeah, it is definitely possible, if unlikely.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

OP said they don't plan to have any contact, if at all possible. But OP should inform their parents of this advice.

8 years ago | Likes 194 Dislikes 1

Their parents are clearly too stupid to listen to good advice.

8 years ago | Likes 70 Dislikes 5

Love can be blinding, especially for parents. They don't want to see what he has become. My parents do the same thing with my sister.

8 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 1

Parents love is unconditional. My grandma loved my uncle who did terrible things. All 7 other kids despised him but she said he's her son

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

If you really love someone, you do not let them go down this road, and continue to by "having faith they'll do better".

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

"Let" what are the options here?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

And that she will always love him. My dad said he never understood it until my sister started getting into drugs and robbing 7-11s, now

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

He will do anything to help her. Has given so much to her and done so much to try to help and she has just taken advantage of. It's the

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

If his parents can't take precautions that's on them.

8 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 5

Probably insanely difficult to admit your kid is a screw up. He's still their child after all

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My family learned my uncle had been stealing from my grandma for years and had been manipulating my parents and aunt to distrust eachother..

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

We only found out after my grandma died and everyone finally got together to talk about certain items they had been promised by my grandma.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Sorry to say, but it sounds like they didn't visit enough to check on 'the items they wanted' when she eventually died.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 7

They were "in storage". My uncle lives with my grandfather, my dad visits often, we don't loot the house loke an RPG.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

The entire sterling silver set my mom and aunt were to split was gone (est val $10k+) as well as other other heirlooms.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

But the parents will come to him for help when they lose everything catch22

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Hindsight is 50-50, it never hurts to warn someone ahead of time and dispense useful advice.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

I think its more that they are delusional about him having changed and therefore doesn't see the point

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hindsight is 20/20.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Thats the general idea of prison, but it rarely ever works out.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Prison trains criminals to be better criminals

8 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 8

This is true. I work in a facility and watch kids come in who made a dumb mistake turn into monsters as adults. Even their speech changes.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Prison is what you make of it. There is the opportunity to heal, or network with criminals. Sauce: 10 years out after 3 years down.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Hey man that’s great. I was speaking about general statistics but im glad it helped you out.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Prison is what you make of it, but prison in America does not foster healing and recuperation. It's about revenge and depriving rights.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Very much the case. When people advocate for prison time because someone did wrong this is all i see /a/VMAsw

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Keep the distances, mate. Be careful. You have become his reflection and will hate you even more for that: You are what he will never be.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Don't go see him. He doesn't care about you, don't care about him.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Crazy. Almost the exact same thing happened to my brother, minus the violence! He gets out in a couple months. I'd say be at the coming 1

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Home party, you're still family. It hurts when your brother dies! He may have learned his lesson. He may have not wanted you to see him in 2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That situation. Just go by yourself. If he acts like a prick then hug your parents and leave.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If he had that attitude before going jail, then hands down he's institutionalized like a muhfucker. He'll be right back in jail in no time.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Im sure he is but if he actually wants a positive relationship with me he's gona have to jump through hoops

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A particularly dim witted cousin of mine was bailed out of jail by his ex girlfriend, who had a restraining order against him.
