Silfra Fissure

The water was so amazingly clear here. We were told that the reason for this was that the water, after coming down from a glacier, goes underground and filters through lava for around 20 years, then comes out crystal clear as seen here.

The water was also incredibly cold. 2° C cold. My wife and I were given the option to wear dry suits and float at the top of the water, but we decided we wanted more freedom of movement, so we went with wet suits.

Silfra Fissure

Silfra fissure was created by the European and North American tectonic plates moving 2 cm apart every year. Silfra is one of the only places in the world where you can swim between two tectonic plates, making it an amazing experience!

Love Iceland, such an amazing and beautiful place.

+1 awesome post, when I wasn't suffering from vertigo and falling out of my chair...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dat frame rate.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

did subnauticas graphics get upgraded?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Expanding earth theory is now being considered. Given the ages of the rock, this seems like a credible theory.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have a fissure...on my butt :(

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm amazed by 1) the post and 2) the FPS

8 years ago | Likes 318 Dislikes 0

Any GoPro can generate fps like this.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

3) those sweet sweet diver butt cheeks.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

and yet this will load without problem on the app, yet any other grainy pos gif will crash it without a second thought!

8 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

Right??

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you can afford to do something like this, you can afford a great camera.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It was just done with a gopro

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I rest my case.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Um don't all Gopros shoot at least 60fps?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Correct, this was done with a gopro hero 5 black

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is from a youtube channel called smarter everyday (unless this is just really similar) but you should check it out, very educational.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just really similar, I took these myself :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh, sorry for plugging a YouTube channel. I'd love to do that! Cherish the memory, it'll be with you for life.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No worries, if people want more then they can check that out too!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

is this under water?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Bbbbbeautiful. It's on my list. My dives at home are that temp, don't feel too much restriction of movement when you're down!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hope to dive that next year

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Dove it last year and one of the best I've done. Well worth it! I def used the dry suit though :)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh ya. Hopefully I'll get some dry suit dives in here in town this summer

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Go with Adventure Vikings. They are the only ones who offer wet suit diving. It's so much better than doing it with a dry suit

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Arctic Adventures was good too (dry suit + scuba)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'll wear a drysuit and sit down there for an hour or so, thanks. You can keep the snorkel.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

This is correct

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What water? I see no water.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wekiva springs state park has something very similar, the water is 70 degrees all year and Crystal clear.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

WOW!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's not how dry suits work...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What do you mean?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hot Chaos! What camera did you use.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Gopro hero 5 black

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There is this invention called a "weight belt" that will allow even people in dry suits to be submerged in water. Not kidding, really works

8 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 0

It seems they were not using tanks etc so a weight belt would have been a death sentence.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 5

With a 7mm wetsuit? Hardly. Virtually everyone will still float easely with just a few KG added.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

it's not hard to swim with a couple-three kilos of weight added when you have fins. and if it weighs you down you can always ditch it.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Haha man. The worst part of diving for me. I'm fat and therefore overly buoyant and I have to wear 6kg around my waist. Pain in the ass

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

I don't think I've ever seen a fat guy in scuba gear

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I work in a dive shop in the Netherlands, people who use less than 6KG here are EXTREMELY rare.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Only 6kg? I used 8kg, with a 3.5mm suit, in Grand Cayman with 35C water at 35m depth.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

When I got certified I weighed 100 lbs and was 5'3. The wetsuit alone kept me floating. I feel your pain

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I needed 7Kg to snorkel at 72Kg and 185cm tall

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Im a good swimmer and enjoy risky things. However, ask me to swim into a deep blue scary hole and I'll cry.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

What if you get sucked down for no reason??? What then? You dead.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Or what if the plates suddenly reach snap point and correct by closing together? What then? You dead.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I'm sweating profusely reading this.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Brrrr

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

60 fps gif

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I would love to do these things but 1) i fear sharks 2) i fear drowning :(

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No sharks here, the water comes from below the ground

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why is their a lack of fishies.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

How would they get there?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

IIR it's due to water being filtered for 20yrs before making it to this point that it loses any essential nutrients for fish or most life.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've been there twice, there's huge trout near the lakeside of the rift.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Im amazed by how incredible a rear-end your wife has more than the water or the plates........don't wanna know what that says about me......

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It says you're the Assman:

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The fissure is formed by the plate boundary, but the boundary is a diffuse zone, not a single fracture. Have fun, though.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

This is probably central enough that it's considered a midpoint? I get what you mean though. Plates too huge to have such a defined edge.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Here's where the rift zone goes into the lake - which fault do you want to choose to be the boundary? https://goo.gl/maps/xVwtwyZqNmD2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a neat thing to tell the tourists, though ;)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I understood that going in, it's just easier to tell people that both plates are right there. I didn't really know how to explain it

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The first sentence was perfect :)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Plot twist: the tectonic plates only take a second to close back up.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Think it through... even if they did you'd be fine. (Put a spec of dust in your drink, then try and grab it with 2 fingers. Observe results)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I say "fine"... You'd probably need a new, unsoiled wetsuit.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Water filtered through lava rock for 20 years" I smell a new branded water.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was actually some of the best tasting water I've ever had

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wetsuits in 2C? I salute you.

8 years ago | Likes 177 Dislikes 1

How much time can you swim in water that cold without dying?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

normal day in Ireland tbh

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

During training I jumped into the North Sea in January while wearing a full immersion suit. There was a hole in the buttcrack and I died.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I then came back to life and shouted the cold away.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You literally almost froze your ass off

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

they're dry suits. source: i was there

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh, like semi-dry?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, full wet. He probably went with a different company. My company was the only one that does wet.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Retraction: all we did was snorkel around at the surface, in order to dive you would need a wet suit, my bad

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What company did you do it with? Adventure Vikings is the only one who does wet suits

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can't recall, if you are REALLY interested I could check if I can find an old booking email

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My body was not happy with my decision, but it was worth it.

8 years ago | Likes 86 Dislikes 0

what is a drysuit?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A dry suit allows you to wear a thin layer of clothes underneath, and also keeps you dry. This also means that you float above the water.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Concave?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Pretty much

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Weren't you supposed to wear dry suits to insulate your body?

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

We were given the option to, but we didn't want to limit our mobility. The wet suits eventually warmed up a bit.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Doing that in a drysuit was like being a piece of debris floating about. I applaud your decision to retain mobility.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My condolences on your testicles.

8 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

My balls were fine, it took quite a while for my other buddy to come out of hiding though.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Welcome to the club, man!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Have fun! Also, make sure you spend your money carefully, food is super expensive there. I recommend going to a grocery store called Bonus.
