I really thought this would count as doing a good thing...

...Ended up hiding in a takeaway until the coast was clear.

EDIT: wow, my first ever Most Viral! At least some good came out of today :)

Offer them a job and are how far it goes. All these people want are hand outs

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I used to think I hated certain foods, then I became very very broke.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Haha same thing happened to me. Bought a cheese sandwich and got "I hate ham". No ham involved

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Nobody hates ham.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yea only give food/water. If they get angry it’s usually cuz they want money for drugs. I️ lived in North philly for years...

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Similar thing for me. Handed a dude a sandwich and he says "no thanks, I don't eat these kinds of sandwiches" WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

It's a nice way of saying sorry I can't buy drugs or booze with this sandwich

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is this Scary Movie?

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I scrolled the comments to see if I was the only one. "I said a dollar bitch"

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

they never want food. they don’t need food. i offered food many times in lieu of money and they snubbed me like they weren’t homeless trash.

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 6

i’ve had people ask me to go to the atm when i said “no i don’t have cash, but can i grab you some food?”

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

same! but for bus tickets

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had almost the same thing happen to me, minus the being chased part. Homeless guy asked for money to buy food, but since I didn't have 1/

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

any cash, I offered to go into the Subway across the street and get him a cheap sub. He then tells me he hates Subway and asks me to walk 2/

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

down the street and buy him a bucket of fried chicken and a two-liter. When I told him it was Subway or nothing, he called me a cunt. 3/3

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

For every 99 homeless people starving and grateful for any breadcrumb dropped, there's that 1 asshole ruining it for them.

8 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 14

Actually many homeless act as described above solely because they have legitimate mental problems

8 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 3

Moreover, giving them money won't fix the problem. All the more reason to donate to a reputable, local social services organization.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Homeless or not, some people are okay. But the majority are bastard coated bastards with bastard filling.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I know the feels @OP, had a guy come up to me asking for food at the gas station. I’m literally about to pay and he goes hold on. Then (1/2)

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

He comes back and goes how’s this? Adds 30$ to my bill. I’m one for helping but don’t take advantage

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Me too. Like I meant a sandwich and a drink not $25 worth of snacks and ice cream. OTOH, she offered me some crack so I guess that’s fair.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

as an ex-homeless person, fuck homeless people. dont give them anything. almost 100% of them earned their situation, (including me, tho)

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

This is why I never give panhandlers anything.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I've had homeless people in Toronto refuse sandwiches from me because they had pork in them lol

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Were they muslim?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Dunno but if you put your fairytale beliefs ahead of sustenance you deserve to starve to death

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Stories like this are why I'm so jaded about giving to street people. I should probably just give cash to a shelter or food bank.

8 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 2

This. Food banks can buy up to 5 times as much food for the same amount of money you give to 1 person.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also food banks and shelters have a better idea of whats needed, instead of getting a glut of hats but no soap and tuna but no crackers.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

To a certain extent, yes. Food banks especially can get a better value for money donated than people donating can get on canned goods.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

v

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

LMAO exactly what I was thinking

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I scrolled because I knew someone would post this. thank you for not disappointing.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I said a dollar bitch!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I used to work with homeless substance abuser. After working with them, i would never give them anything directly. Its a waste.

8 years ago | Likes 281 Dislikes 5

Yeah, if they don't have substance abuse issues when they become homeless, they often develop them as a coping mechanism

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Found this the hard way. Offered coffee and food to a guy, refused it, made a big scene in front of my daughter, who I was trying to 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

teach about being caring to others. I haven't given any homeless person anything since then, afraid it'll happen again, or worse. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 2

I used to work with them- in that I was at an ED and saw a lot die, typically from overdoses. It has made me feel guilty giving cash

8 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 0

Exactly. I saw one homeless couple get 400 dollars cash for christmas from a nice person. The woman almost died of a over dose as a result.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

That was the point. Instead she lived and cost tax payers hundreds of thousands of dollars on pointless revives and red potions.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Well said.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This happened to me when I tried to give a homeless man an apple, since that's the only food I had. He threw the apple back at me.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

That was rude but a lot of homeless people can’t eat apples due to dental problems.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hate when they ask for money in front of a grocery store, I offer to by them food instead, and they say no thanks. GTFO.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Had a similar incident in California. Dude opens the bag and says, “No, thanks. I’m vegan.” I’ll just go fuck myself, then.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Homeless dude was after food on the tube, someone gave him a sausage role, he then said he was leading a vegan lifestyle

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

lmao a sausage role. was it a part in your play?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's called "The Ugliest Weenie". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lW2B3lPUeQ8

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I didn't even think anything about that until your comment but then I actually burst out laughing and now I look dumb.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is why I stopped giving to the homeless, mostly ungrateful drug addicts. Lost sympathy for most of em.

8 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 3

Homeless guy walked into a fast food place asking for change to buy some food. Gave him a few bucks, he walked out & to the liquor store.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

To be fair, alcohol is packed with calories.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I never carry cash if I can help it. I’m waiting for one to talk me he takes cards and whip out an iphone and square reader.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Used to work at a grocery; I carry no cash now if I can help because of things that happened with homeless people; Too many stories

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You should tell them

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tell me*

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

donate to a homeless shelter or soup kitchen instead. at least the people ending up there will be appreciative.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

When I was volentold to work at a soup kitchen for a class everyone was really rude and ungrateful. I never wanted to go back.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that's typical of homeless. you are still not giving them money for drugs on the street . and they've come in on their own for a meal.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hmm, that's genius. At least you know it does not go to booze and drugs

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Either mentally ill or looking for money for drugs. If you want to help others, donate to soup kitchens or the like, not directly.

8 years ago | Likes 566 Dislikes 25

Here's the downvote you wanted, way to judge a bunch of people you don't know then throw imaginary money numbers at corrupt organisations.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 6

I stopped helping at a soup kitchen because the people I was serving had better stuff then I did.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 8

Or work with the kitchens/organizations to get them jobs.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Username does not check out

8 years ago | Likes 91 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Post something negative so I can down vote you god dammit

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But I don't want to post my credit score...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's the best way to call them out on it while helping the ones genuinely in need, buy them food directly.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Agreed. Although I usually spend my leftover per diem on sandwiches and give them to homeless people when I travel for work. Never an issue.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Definitely mentally ill, I'd say

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I'd say he wanted money for drugs. When he realised he was not getting his fix for the night he became angry at you... & maybe he hates Tuna

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well addiction is a mental illness so... Why not both?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Especially with homeless people specifically. So many phonies out there, and people who put themselves into bad positions. You can only >>>

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

help those who want to be helped, and those who want to be helped can find a soup kitchen or a place to sleep at night usually.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I am conflicted with your username.

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Reverse psychology, don't fall for it!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I Downvoted. Anything to help the smart pants.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Or... just them money. I'll give them drug money so they don't have to steal it from someone. What do I care if that's what they want to do?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 9

You'll care when they rob/assault/stab/rape/kill someone you know getting more drugs or money.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Did you not get what I just said? If everyone gets off their high horse and gives these hits a dollar or tow when they ask they won't

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

have to commit crimes to get money to get drugs. I think it's also good to support places they can go when they are ready to quit but

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

depriving them of money won't make them quit it will only make them hurt others to get the money.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Last time I tried to give food to a homeless guy, he asked, "Can't you just give me money??"

8 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

Can't buy drugs or booze with food.

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

In big cities, food tends to be easy to find in dumpsters. Money for shelter, medication, clothes, toothpaste and so on is trickier.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

They don't look like someone who wash their teeth a lot and also look like booze is higher on their priority list than shelter or medication

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

That happened to my friend. The guy wouldn't let him go buy him a sandwich. Just kept saying he wanted cash.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

"You get food, or you get nothing."

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

If you buy them food from a store, black out the barcode. Many will try to return it for cash. Good way to weed out the genuine ones.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Once had a guy ask me for money. Only had a few quarters, but I gave them to him to be nice. He got angry because I didn't give him enough.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

this happened to me too in chicago. guy was like you have more quarters than that give them up! like dude this is my parking fare..

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Happened to me in London. Bitch shoved me for not giving her enough.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Should have stood your ground and beat the shit out of him.

8 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 10

Seriously. Hope they're ready to get knocked the fuck out.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

Risk getting shot, infected blood on me, burden a hospital by him seeking treatment he can't pay for? No thanks. None of that sounds good.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

A homeless guy who chases someone over a sandwich is crazy. Never underestimate crazy.

8 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

That's why my Taser is always fully charged.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

never fight someone who could be a drug addict (and agressive homeless probably are). there is too much that could go wrong.

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 2

Even trained fighters can't beat meth rage

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yea you could get aids punching them in the teeth or something like if you get a tiny scrape that gets blood in it boom aids.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

And then you get his blood all over you and now you have AIDS, Hep C, and probably fucking Ebola too.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

As a homeless advocate...don't give the homeless money.

8 years ago | Likes 149 Dislikes 2

I'm definitely anti-homelessness.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

straight up don't believe you

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 33

You don't believe I'm a homeless advocate? Lol. Ok

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I work 15 hours a week at a local mission working directly with lots of people needing help. Supporting people through panhandling ...

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

..doesn't work because it's so lucrative that it keeps people trapped in their self destructive cycle. Not giving them money doesn't mean ..

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

..don't give them your time and respect

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Why?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

because anyone can claim to be anything on the internet. Also, I can't imagine that homeless folks would be like, 'yeah, go out there..."

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 6

"...and make sure they know not to give us anything,, that's how you can advocate for us."

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

I see. I gathered the knowledge was from experience, not passing along their request.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"advocate" has a specific meaning

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Beggers can't be choosers.

8 years ago | Likes 2072 Dislikes 16

That makes sense if he was asking for sandwiches.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 9

Except when they can.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

They can be sandwich tossers tho

8 years ago | Likes 368 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Apparently they can

8 years ago | Likes 117 Dislikes 1

I accidentally read this as boogers can't be choosers.... I liked it and will be using it in the future.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

especially if they consistently choose the wrong horses...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think the underlying message here is that beggars can, in fact, be choosers. And complete asshats.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But they can be hatters

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Literally the best answer out there

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Boogers cant be pickers.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You’d think. I️ was in San Fran and a homeless dude asked for food. Gave him a fish sandwich, he told me he was vegan and gave it to his dog

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Doggo got eat too

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends on how much they're getting.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

when beggars make more than minimum wage, don't pay takes and still collect welfare...yeah, they kind of can.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But beggars can

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hah. Or else what?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There’s this fucking asshole who begs on the corner of my street. He flicks people off who don’t give cash and turns down food on the reg

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 3

Beggars can’t be tunas

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hmm this sounds suspiciously like the scene from Scary Movie

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But I can, Mr. Burton.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unless they are American

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 13

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Well, with this one FP, homeless everywhere are screwed (fewer will help), even if some are deserving...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You meant to say, beggars can't be chasers, right?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah they can.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You've clearly never met a beggar before

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Turns out, they can, lmao.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Saw a homeless guy woth an iPhone outside a cash only donut shop. "Can you spare some change?" "Nope, i can give you a donut though!" 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"Oh, i cant eat donuts. Im gluten free." "Mother fucker, you are literally begging. You cant be picky."

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So now I always give him dirty ass looks and I know he isn’t homeless because his nails are clean. Fuck him

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 3

If only there was some sort of publicly accessible hand cleaning technology, possibly using water.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

You can't tell homelessness by looks. Thhat said, I donate to a couple charities & would never give someone on the street anything directly.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Hey my nails were kept clean and trimmed even when I was homeless. There are a lot of homed ppl who are worse hygeinically

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I am sorry I didn’t mean it in a bad way at all. I just meant I do not believe he needs to be begging by the looks of him

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This ain't chipotle..

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Thank you for writing this

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No problem

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Found you, nice r/commentdiving

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

they can when they want cash for drugs or alcohol. That's why I never carry cash to give these types. Sad but necessary

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 2

Once when I said that, they pulled their cell phone out with a card reader and said they accepted major cards as well.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Or just carry cash but don't give it to them?

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

but then you don't have to lie. cash is outdated anyway

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Outdated? Sure. Worth keeping a $20 in case you get mugged and $40 in the car for a post-mugging fill-up? Definitely.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

nah not worth it. just use my credit card number to make a purchase if need be or just ask for a phone call

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Being homeless and poor doesn't mean that you can't have your own tastes. Obviously the way he reacted was wrong in this particular case.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 9

Well, I hate tuna too, but if I was that hungry, I'd eat anything.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

But saying that because you're homeless you're not allowed to reject a niche taste like tuna(it's fucking disgusting!)is taking away dignity

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 8

He could have accepted it and later exchange it, or politely declined it saying the taste of tuna gives him the jeebies tho.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Discussion aside, how do you exchange a sandwich?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

By finding a potentially hungry person (eg fellow beggar friend) and talking to him.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

...but the CAN be crack addicts.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It has its ups and downs...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

any of the above.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

All of the above?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've learned a lot homeless people are actually very ungrateful.

8 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 1

A lot of homeless people are addicts or suffer mental illness.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You might just be running into fakers who are panhandling for cash. Which is one of the most frustrating things if you actually want to help

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

I offer sign flyers and homeless people granola bars. If they take the bar, they get a $20 with it. Usually they aren't interested.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

It's why I'm reluctant to hand out cash directly to the homeless. Sucky feeling though.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It really is. I've done a decent bit of shelter and food bank work over the years and it is incredible how much a little can help. 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

panhandlers really ruin things for the people who need help and reinforce prejudice against the poor. It is horrible.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
