Lindy (on the right) was part of the pair of baby flamingos I helped get accustomed to humans and become a part of their flock. To get them used to people we walked with them once a day. At first it was inside, gradually as they got older we ventured outside.

Lindy was at first smaller than Calypso, because she is older than him. But you'll notice he grows quickly into the same size as her and surpasses her eventually since he is a male.

He used to be soooo little and fluffy!

This was one of the greatest moments of my life. Interacting with flamingo chicks that were only a couple weeks old. I was determined to be a flamingo mom because our male flamingo in our flock, Mambo, is not my biggest fan.

Lindy got tired on one of his first walks outside.

This was a big moment! It was time to go on a much longer walk with the adult flamingos. Lindy is on the right, you can tell since he's still really fluffy compared to Calypso.

Walking outside like a pro.

One of the first times they went to the outdoor habitat. I spent a lot of time talking to the babies in hopes one would remember my voice and call back and maybe consider me their mom. I think it worked with Lindy. He's always interested in me when I'm talking or calls back when I call to him.

"Hi mom."

Merp.

Flamingos and birds in general grow very fast. As you can see Lindy grew up to be the tall male he is determined to be. Male greater flamingos can be about 5 feet tall. He might grow a little bit more.

Flamingos love to preen hair. They probably think that it's a feather out of place and it needs to be put back where it came from.

Lindys wingspan and his bright wing feathers! It takes about 3-4 years for a flamingo to turn completely pink from beak to feet. So while his wing feathers are already pink he will still remain a dull grey for a few more years.

Here he is in the habitat. I called out to him and he called back and came a little closer to get a look at me.

Sorry for the selfie but look at him.

Here he is swimming. Flamingos swimming is the funniest thing to me since their legs are so long.

Lindy finds phones very interesting and loves to preen on them. Because of that sometimes cool pictures are taken.

Happy Hatch Day Lindy!!

ATTENTION TO IMGUR BABY FLAMINGOS ARE NOW CALLED BIRD LLAMAS THANK YOU. GOODNIGHT.

I'm not saying that this post is for the birds. But it's an awesome post, despite being for the birds.

"Will I grow up to be a noble swan?" "You're a flamingo" "Fuck."

Lindy seems cool as heck! What other animals do you work with?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They'd turn pinker if they ate more shrimp

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's in their diet and the protein that turns them pink is also in their food. It just takes time.

You have the best job!! Can I come to work with you?!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

You can come visit me at work! Haha

You're very lucky to have the opportunity to work w so many animals. Cincinnati Zoo seems like one of the "good" ones.

I might be biased, but I definitely believe it is.

How many shrimps do you have to eat, before you make your skin turn pink, eat too much and youll get sick, shrimps are pretty rich.

8 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 4

Yes

8 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 1

I went to the zoo the day after he was killed. And saw the memorial you guys had set up. It was pretty heartbreaking

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

We didn't set that up. That gorilla statue was there ages before he came to us. The great people of Cincinnati did that themselves. <3

8 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

But damn does the flamingo exhibit smell awful

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the support! Flamingos are fairly common in zoo's, check your local one!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm in Australia... no flamingos here :-)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not even at the Sydney zoo?! That's crazy! Come to the states for a visit!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Maybe at Sydney, but I'm in Perth. But yes, I'd like to visit the US one day.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Gotcha, the Sydney zoo is on my zoo bucket list.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow this is such a cool post. I love it. Totally scared of birds but these are kinda cute when lil fluffy things

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

These guys are nice! Unless you piss off a male and then he hates you forever

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well hand raising prob helps too. Sooo do these birbs have teeth ?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Feed them smarties so they become colorful !

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Smarties don't contain beta-carotene which is the protein that turns animals different colors :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Then feed the shrimp with ultra colored carotene stuff and let nature do the thing !(one can dream :)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We do feed them food with beta-carotene along with shrimp. They'll turn pink. It will just take time!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I seriously love reading all your posts @OP! Thanks for sharing!

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

What did you study to be able to work with animals like this?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Biology! Takes more than education though
