While visiting some cemeteries you may notice that headstones marking certain graves have coins on them, left by previous visitors to the grave.

These coins have distinct meanings when left on the headstones of those who gave their life while serving in America’s military, and these meanings vary depending on the denomination of coin.

A coin left on a headstone or at the grave site is meant as a message to the deceased soldier’s family that someone else has visited the grave to pay respect. Leaving a penny at the grave means simply that you visited.

A nickel indicates that you and the deceased trained at boot camp together, while a dime means you served with him in some capacity. By leaving a quarter at the grave, you are telling the family that you were with the soldier when he was killed.

According to tradition, the money left at graves in national cemeteries and state veterans cemeteries is eventually collected, and the funds are put toward maintaining the cemetery or paying burial costs for indigent veterans.

In the US, this practice became common during the Vietnam war, due to the political divide in the country over the war; leaving a coin was seen as a more practical way to communicate that you had visited the grave than contacting the soldier’s family, which could devolve into an uncomfortable argument over politics relating to the war.

Some Vietnam veterans would leave coins as a “down payment” to buy their fallen comrades a beer or play a hand of cards when they would finally be reunited.

The tradition of leaving coins on the headstones of military men and women can be traced to as far back as the Roman Empire.

That sixty cents per headstone wont help out much

So you're not supposed to leave a dollar bill if you took them to their first strip club?

The part with the romans is not entirely correct, it had another purpose. People were buried with coins so that they could 1/

pay charon, the ferryman of Hades, to get their souls over the rivers Styx and Acheron that divided the living world from the underworld 2/2

Gives “thank you for your service,” a new meaning.

6 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

I've heard of a service charge, but this is ridiculous

6 years ago | Likes 125 Dislikes 3

Free money for the grounds crew

idk y it was downvoted. sum1 has to clean the tombstones lol

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Because if the family doesn't take the money it is actually used by the grounds to pay for upkeep on markers and area. Did not downvote btw.

I know in other countries we use stones. Coins of different denominations meaning things seems odd to me, it implies someone made up rules.

It's nice though.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Aren't all rules made up?

Went to a Military cemetery last Memorial Day and saw some quarters on a few grave stones

6 years ago | Likes 99 Dislikes 1

I've gone every year to visit a friend of mine, I wont' be able to this year. Its the first time he might not have a quarter.

6 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Maybe you could send the coin to the cemetary, surely they would be willing to place it for you if you called ahead and told them?

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I thought about doing that but I feel like it isn't the same.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Well whatever you decide to do I'm sure your friend knows you will be thinking of him. Have a good day today KTofu :)

This makes me want to go to civil war graves and leave quarters.

6 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 10

Half dollars, wonder what that would mean.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 4

Leave a whole dollar. You ARE him.

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Leave a twenty, it means you killed the guy

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Leave a Benjamin, means you and the guy Eiffel-towered whores in Da Nang together.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A quarter means you were with them when they died, so I guess a half dollar means you killed them.
