This is an unnecessary danger. If your baby chokes or gags they may not be able to move the bottle away from their mouth. Also, it causes the milk to pool in the back of their throat which can back up into their ears. That will cause ear infections which can lead to deafness. Wait until your child is able to sit up on their own and hold the bottle easily. Take 10min to connect with your child and insure they are eating safely. :)

This is why I prefer to eat my offspring.

You obviously know nothing of babies.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 9

Holy shit, people actually do that? Why wouldn't you just feed your goddamn baby? Don't have kids if you don't want them, people!

9 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

I knew a girl who would prop a bottle into her newborn's mouth so she could have a cigarette break. I hated her so much.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not sure how ear infections are connected to the back of the throat

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 7

Youre probably against duct taping the bottle in place too aren't you!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Or dont use big holes in the nipple

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Huh

About to be a dad... PANIC

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just be there for her. Let Mom have naps and time away. It's hard to take care of others when you neglect yourself.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cheers all. Mum's good as. Due march. Still time to prepare. Loving life and can't freaken wait. Having a Boy. So many adventures await us.

Im 29l8 with 4 kids . I dont understand why people have to try shit like this. Having kids isnt even that hard .

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 8

Im 28 not 2918.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

I don't know why you are being downvoted.. I agree, also babies need to connect and they need to be nursed. Why would one leave a baby to

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Feed alone..

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The "baby" is holding the bottle. The ball just makes it easier for them.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 15

Yes, obviously. But that baby is really young to be feeding alone. Not too mention many ppl prop bottle feed their kids b/c they are 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 5

"Busy". This just encourages that. The practice is, again, an unnecessary danger. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 5

Develop motor skills a bit wouldn't it?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 5

? I don't get the busy thing but I wouldn't leave my child like that, and I couldn't tell you how old that one is but I think it would help.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

A very young baby and just walk away. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

There are many ways to help build motor skills that aren't a risk like this is. You'd be surprised how many ppl will prop a bottle for 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Don't have these issues when you just feed em with your boobs.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 5

But not everyone can breastfeed for multiple reasons. I wasn't able to breastfeed.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I know, it's just nice to not have these issues.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exactly. I hate the guilt that I feel when people say this. Some people just aren't able to.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's not intentional. I've had women tell me they thing BF is disgusting so they chose not to. Weird, but I think holes are gross so idk

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

LOL. Tru dat.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Source? Evidence?

My kid choked on formula when he was 9 months. It went up to his eyes and then he cried white. Scared the fuck out of me. He's fine tho

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

There is none everyone who had a kid is suddenly an expert. I just bought a car and didn't magically become a mechanic

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Many good parents spend a hell of a lot of time researching everything about childcare and talking to their Dr.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I did. I don't consider myself an expert but just looking at that jimmy rigged contraption, my common sense tells me, "fuck that shit."

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Common sense

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Threats aside, you're better off holding the bottle for the baby before 6 mo. Majority of kids don't have the motor skills to do it ①

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

themselves, and trying to get them to do it at a younger age is unneeded when you should be making sure they're getting properly fed. ②

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

(It's hella tough to pull fluid through that nipple, if you've ever tried... I have) ③

Put a boob in that boys mouth like God intended.

9 years ago | Likes 74 Dislikes 27

What if it is gods will to keep people using these and wants to hurt these kids? 1/

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"God plans everything". I loose my nerves everytime someone uses phrase "like god intented".

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I tried but he was in NICU for low blood sugar. I was able to pump for about a month before I dried up. He was too used to bottles (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

From round the clock feedings to make sure he didn't go into seizure state. I wanted to but it wasn't going to happen.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That sounds very tiring

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

it was. 14-15 infant blood sugar is when they go into seizure state. they found his at 16. i didn't sleep for the first 3 months from fear.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Semi-related, out of curiosity, did you put much weight on during the low sleep period? Also hope all is good now!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know im being overly sensitive but sometimes not possible. I had emergency surgery on breast and could not breast feed which super sucks

9 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 8

Had to give up at three months. I work 60 hours a week on average, couldn't find time to pump enough. I feel super guilty.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Now that hes eating some solids i try to make up for my own guilt by feeding him homemade baby food. But yeah the guilt is still there.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It should have said "If possible, put a boob in that boys mouth, if not, carry on as best you can." Or some such.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Thanks. I couldn't breast feed either, and I also get overly sensitive about it.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 3

Im glad im not alone :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Any actual stats or even anecdotes to back this up? I'm generally skeptical of parental advice

9 years ago | Likes 135 Dislikes 8

Probably heard it on some blogging site, or cousins daughter got an ear infection and through no clear logic this was deemed the cause.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 13

as it is difficult to swallow in that position (try it for yourself).

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

you shouldn't have a baby in the first place. Plus, you should never bottle feed a baby when it's flat on it's back,

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 5

As a junior doc, happy to verify leaving your kid on its back with a milk bottle will ruin their ears. Willing to link to good ear resource.

Reputable doctor speak source : http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/858990-overview#a3

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Thank you. It does strike me as more of a criticism of feeding when on back than the grip thing generally, but the connection isn't tenuous.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

No problems :) always happy to actually provide genuine and useful references.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I wish there were even more people like you...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Babies have died from this: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15296253/

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

I don't think people realize this. Newborns, especially, can aspirate or suffocate EXTREMELY easily.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The ear infections part is true, but hearing loss caused by infections/fluid in the middle ear space goes away if treated properly

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 2

Tell that to my tinnitus.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not true at least for me. I had bad ear infections and tubes as a child and i have so much scarring im missing a whole range of hearing

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Yeah tell that to someone who had dozens of ear infections. Treatment does nothing. But make sure to speak up

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I went to grad school for audiology so yes, I know, all the kids I saw for multiple ear infections I felt bad for, but it did work for many

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

as it is difficult to swallow in that position (try it for yourself).

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Me too. Everyone insists that everything kills children but I still see a bunch of 'em running around...

9 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 5

The ones running are dying but just slower.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yeah, right? I mean plenty of kids made it through those golden years of extremely cool and unsafe toys. Like my parents

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Its more a matter of "Do you want to be the poor sob who's baby died to a 1/10000 chance you could have prevented easily?"

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Thinking like that you are not going to get through one day without dying of stress. Which obviously is the case for many parents.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Obviously not, but I'm still giving piggybacks to my nephew despite such very low risks.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Mom of two here. NEVER EVER have a baby hold it's own bottle, don't anything like this. If you are too lazy do hold the baby and the bottle

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 8

Again, stats? Anecdotes. "Mom of two" is not what we're looking for. Jenny McCarthy is a mom.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 10

OK, no anecdotes,we never did that. Stats? probably there won't be any 'cause not many parents do this with that particular apparatus.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Just the lazy ones who can't even hold a bottle for their newborn for five minutes. Why come up with these "redneck" solutions?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hold the damn bottle and bond with your kid.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Like you said, they're lazy.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you, but there isn't even an anecdote here. I could generously assume you've witnessed choking but all I know is your a mom and caps.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

*you're.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Thank you

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Of course there was more to respond to than the typo.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

oh no, that was the single thing to respond to.
