I didn’t change anything; don’t really know how. The good news is that my prior posts are still jpegs and still embedded.

So is there some kind of control settings that will let me go back to having embeddable jpegs, etc. to share?

Or is there another site/app that lets me share jpegs?

EDIT: I was able to sign into Imgur via my mobile browser for the first time in years. I literally could not for a while, so I moved to the app- I didn’t think the website still existed.??‍♂️

It took a few tries, but I figured out how to use it to get jpegs again. Thanks to those who suggested this possibility!

EDIT #2: the Imgur app sometimes auto-loads when I’m trying to access the website via Safari. So it’s not a perfect solution.??‍♂️

EDIT #3: thank you for all the upvotes and comments. All the attention has brought ANOTHER change to ight, namely that notifications of new comments no longer link directly to the comment, just the general post.

Does pixelfed allow direct linking? https://pixelfed.social/

the usage would be that you upload to this site separately, then return to the same page with the url

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

This is known as enshittification, see https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/potemkin-ai/

It took me forever to find where they put the uploads section, only then to find it in the new post section where you can only see thumbnails and you have to re-upload each one to see them in full size.

It's the only social media community I know without an algorithm trying to predict what I want to see. Beautiful beetles, interesting carpentry joins, toolgifs, revolutions in countries under a media blackout, none of this would ever come to my feed on an algorithmically driven platform.

If I know of a non-algorithmic alternative, I'd happily GTFO, but as an engine for discovering cool things you didn't think you wanted to discover, I still don't have an alternative.

Imgur is the Soundcloud of jpgs.

Enshittification: how platforms die. It's imgur's turn.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I mean, just don't use the app.

8 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

the desktop version also got updated to hide the page that has all your images, unless you remember that it's .imgur.com/all and even then you may have to clear your cookies or use incognito mode to get it to load.

/a/sKOKnVP#IX6ZWql is the sort of url you get, remove everything from a/ until the # and add .jpg at the end https://imgur.com/IX6ZWql.jpg

https://imgur.com/example-text-ABCD123#EFGH456 link with /EFGH456.jpg" class="comment__media" loading="lazy"/> (which is really annoying, but is better than nothing, I guess)

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(well, IF they let you embed that)

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@op. The changes were in progress to fix some of your gripes. I was a beta tester for imgur. All the staff working at imgur were just let go. So I don't expect any changes are coming anymore.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

None of my complaints were things until I posted.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just wanna know why I can't search for anything anymore unless I use a hashtag. The search function is almost completely useless.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You'll need to use a proper search engine for that. (Sucks, I know)

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I dumped iFunny for the same reasons that commenters here are providing for leaving Imgur. I get that the owners want to make a profit, but at the cost of changing the concept and then losing your customer base? That’s just bad business sense.

Im an android app user. There's a way to use it, but you have to edit the url a certain way. I've been using this app less and less because of it. You have to add i. after// delete everything from gallery to # and add .jpg or .gif at the end

8 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it sucks balls, but hey at least there IS a way. (mp4 better than gif though)

Good place to host. I really liked the browsing here, though. It was a place to get exposed to a lot of ideas and crafts and viewpoints without algorithms. I learned about a lot of protests and riots here that never made a day of news in the US until they were over, during media blackouts in that country.

The community was also unique and weird. It's such a shame to lose it.

8 months ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

Amen.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Imgur is ass, don't worry about it :)

That may be true. However, some things in this World are good because they are being made better every day with good decisions. Other things in this World are good because they were once fabulous, and the long row of bad decisions that are working to make them worse every day have not yet enshittified them enough to make them without value. Imgur is of the latter type, I feel.

8 months ago | Likes 0 Dislikes 0

I mean, I wouldn't say that 'not being without value' is equivalent to 'good'. There isn't much in the world that's entirely without value. But I can soundly say if I had an a-algorithmic alternative for memes and weirdness, I would jump ship from Imgur in a heartbeat.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yesterday, I found something else I appreciate about Imgur immensely: If you're not logged in, and you click around on the commenting functionalities, the website tells you gently that you're not logged in and can't comment. Other websites immediately redirect you to a sterilized registering page, which in the case of Imgur would mess with my browsing position in usersub. So, good job Imgur for not doing that!

8 months ago | Likes 0 Dislikes 0

Agreed they did a weird thing so, hypothetically if I wanted to link to unrelated Belgian techno anthem Pump Up The Jam ooooo-edition-xsKawtE#YfLw6sd">/gallery/been-too-long-since-last-musical-dump-ayooooo-edition-xsKawtE#YfLw6sd that's what I get. Cut everything between .com/ and the hashtag and you get https://imgur.com/YfLw6sd then you have to add the file extension,.mp4 here then you get https://imgur.com/YfLw6sd.mp4 fix this motherfucking shit @Martynmage if you're still employed this is ludicrous shit

8 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Fyi, he doesn't work for imgur anymore. The staff was all laid off. /gallery/RWXpccB/comment/2468273967/1

8 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Also, fun tidbit, his non-admin tagged comments don't appear in "new mode", but they do in old.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They’re there, it’s just that admin comments are designed to always appear at the top. Once I make enough comments that there’s no admin ones on the first page they’ll all appear normally

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Ah I see, looks like it stickies all admin comments from a month back at the top. That's honestly kind of weird, but I guess I can see the logic behind it.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It also makes it impossible to insert pics as reactions from the app - but you still can from the site.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I use the site on my PC and I can't access my images to insert into comments. The drop-down menu under my user name just has Posts, Favorites, Comments, About, no Images anymore.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I tried emailing support, but the response they sent just directed me to the general help page.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Might try using it through Safari or Chrome but I have no idea how shitty the mobile site is since I only use imgur logged in on desktop. I suspect "pretty shitty" is the answer unfortunately since they probably want to push you to the mobile app for all that sweet sweet datamining, push notifications, and control over your experience.

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I’m using iOS Safari, just like I did when I joined. I moved to the app because it didn’t work with that browser anymore.🤷🏾‍♂️

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

you can always tell your mobile browser to pretend to be a desktop

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's desperation mode, it's hell trying to use a desktop UI on a tiny screen, plus some sites detect it and still send you the mobile version.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Maybe. OTOH, that will change the way my Safari works with many other websites I frequent. That could be good; that could be bad.

Not complicated, but extra steps, which add up as I’m bouncing between different tasks.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just use the website for this and it works fine... But I also use desktop

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

even on desktop you'd have to know that the page that has all your images is .imgur.com/all (and you have to regularly clear your cookies or log in fresh in an incognito window for the page to even load)

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

What? Slow down a sec. When I click on my username in the top right corner, I used to get an 'images' option in the drop-down menu. That disappeared. The only way to access my images is 'make a new post', and even then, the page that comes up from 'my uploads' is not organized into the folders they used to be in. To find an image just to use it as a reaction in a comment takes so much time & fiddling I tend to give up. Are you saying there is still a way to access my uploaded images on desktop?

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yes

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ok. I'm desperate enough to ask: would you please give me at least a starting point? I use desktop on PC almost exclusively. Imgur support won't provide any info.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

https://DigYourselfBaby.imgur.com/all if that loads an "oops we can't find that" page, open an incognito window, go to imgur.com, log in, and try the link again.

itt or igg or something, photobucket, google drive, make your own domain, reddit

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Photobucket already burned a bridge with me when they changed their business model several years ago. My account, formerly free for years, was unilaterally changed to a subscription model.

That might have been OK with me, but they blurred 100% of my hosted images in order to pressure me into subscribing. There was no grandfathering- the only way to unblur anything was to start paying.

Instead of caving into the hostage takers, I went to Imgur.

History may be repeating.

8 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Probably time to pay your own hosting and own it. Alternatively, porn sites are porn because they have loose rules, then often start as just freedom sides and get known for porn.

You can thank private equity for this... Medialab is the piece of shit that did it and just like all private equity, they say everything will stay the same then when everyone forgets about the purchase, they try to wring every cent they can out of the platform. I am glad I was one if the lucky ones who was gifted imgur emerald or I can guarantee I would no longer use the platform

8 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Originally, they were emojis- different ones, in fact- but now the site has decided they’re all going to be boys.

Gender reveal!

8 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Congratulations! It's a complaint!

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't some keyboard apps have their own built-in emoji search?

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’m not sure what you’re asking. I was using the emoji keyboard on my iPhone, and chose a couple of emojis- a shrug and a facepalm. 🤷🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️

They appeared.

Then, at some later point, the site changed them.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh, I see what you mean now. Well… a few days ago you couldn't even use emojis on titles and captions at all, they turned out as ??. So I guess now you can use ONE emoji, which is one more that you used to be able to. Hooray, I guess? 🤷

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh, ACTUALLY I know what happened now. There's no official "man shrugging" emoji character in Unicode, so you need to use the sequence "shrugging" + "combine with" + "male" (and that'll render as a single "shrugging man" emoji). But apparently Imgur has very limited support for emojis in titles and captions, so you got "question mark" + "question mark" + "male". ??♂️

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How are they going to get their ad revenue of they don't sledgehammer you into coming into the app? Think of the profits! /S

8 months ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 0

The app is the worst way to use the platform.
Browser version is so much better.
Runs better, less buggy, and can have AdBlock.

8 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

How do you propose imgur makes money to pay their bills?

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

I don't think reducing functionality is the answer.

8 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

It is if you need to make operating cheaper. Any actual ideas on how imgur can make money to pay the bills?

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

Add content has increased dramatically in the last few years, now coupled with lower functionality and over moderation... Essentially a shitter product on all fronts. Their revenue is based on views and they have deliberately made it a less fun/useful site to be on, content creators are going to places where they can create content which has meant less reason for viewers to be here. Declining viewers is the problem, and making the product worse won't fix that

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

You can only cut out so much functionality before the product/service isn't worth using anymore. It's called "enshittification"

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yall ignoring the important part on purpose? Lol

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

on a PC I can right click and select Open Image in New Tab and it brings up a direct image link.

https:// i.imgur.com/Iq290aj.png in this case

8 months ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

That's cause imgur can't control browsers, they can do some things do manipulate what's being shown, but on a browser you'll always be able to get the image link one way or another.

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

here is a workaround in the android app:

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Even if you link directly to the image URL, when other people open the link, nowadays Imgur will redirect them to the page view the first time. (Doesn't do it on your link, because people reading this have already recently opened the page containing it, but you can try eg. https:// i.imgur.com/NEBgO8w.jpeg )

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but you can still embed images this way for example in phpbb forums using the [img] tags.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately, I’m using Imgur on Apple products, 99% of the time on a mobile device. Thanks for the info, though!

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

then use the browser? seems like a you problem

8 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

I stopped using Imgur with iOS Safari because it stopped working.🤷🏾‍♂️ Is there a browser setting that would allow it to work again?

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd suggest using an alternative browser, but Apple forces all other browsers to actually use the Safari engine underneath on iOS, so it might not work. You're not going to like it, but your best option is not to buy Apple, who are up front and centre in the world of forcing you to have the "correct" capitalist experience.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

you can use browser on apple mobile devices as well as on PC
imgur works much better in a browser, as a bonus you can easily block the ads
and the website works much better than an "app" and probably steals less of your data

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Which is nice, but the app has totally fucked it - you can still do it but you have to know which bits of the URL to edit away.

8 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

I never use the app. Just open and log in and use Desktop Mode on phone browser. The app is so bad.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

With a gallery link I can’t do even that anymore? If I can’t find links here to share anymore, I’ll just stop coming here and I’m guessing I won’t be the only one.

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Imgurs dead man. I only come here because im homeless and have nowhere else to go. If I could find a better place I would leave.

8 months ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 1

Something like StumbleUpon? That’s how found Imgur years ago. Sadly it was shutdown a long time ago. I found something similar called Mix.

8 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That's true, this is the only place I get exposed to so much demented MLP art. The day Elle leaves is likely the day I hang up my account

8 months ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 2

A open source alternative would be a dream. I would even pay a few bucks to get an adfree experience

8 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Any suggestions? I'd happily leave this place behind with how junky it's become.

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

The problem with any social media platform is they cost too much to run.
So eventually they have to monetise.
So in the early days before then it's all about user experience to grow the platform.
But when that switch gets flipped, it becomes all about monetisation. Happens to everything site and app.

8 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

It's gotten to the point that I would pay to keep the enshitification at bay. I've been off Facebook over a decade, Reddit gets worse every year, I finally deleted Instagram, now Imgur is rapidly decaying.

Even my "niche hobby" networks (like Pinkbike.com, or BikesnobNYC) have gotten bought up and are in the process of getting ruined.

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Happens with any site that's old enough, and most of the big platforms are close to 20 years old.
And most social media sites have their peak in quality after around 10 years.

8 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lmao Imgur tried for so long to get people to pay for ad free, but nobody does and people are mad about the ads.

Imgur has gone down in quality in some ways and got better in others. It’s expensive to run a service like this, I’m not sure how anyone wants it to be free without ads.

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

They are owned by an advertising company. So im pretty sure they are the worst people on the planet to find an alternative monetization strategy.

Advertising has been a horrible psyop from the beginning and the fact that you're so indoctrinated into capitalism shines through your comment brightly.

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

You are so enlightened. Tell me, which YouTube channel educated you so thoroughly on matters of commerce?

Using this incredible wealth of knowledge, how would you suggest a company provide a service that costs millions of dollars a year to operate without charging anyone to use it?

If you can figure that out, you better start an app with your immaculate busines model that doesn’t cost anyone anything or have any ads.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Im sorry ill take my mba knowledge elsewhere Mr. YouTube.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That’s the one!! Thanks!

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No shade on Ellie, but discord is a terrible platform; comments have the lifespan of a mayfly. And, discord's getting enshitified, as well.

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah discord just isn't a good replacement for imgur or for forums. It's just best used to chat and hang out. Not post all the meme dumps and artsy stuff that I like about imgur

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I sadly do agree. Where do we go from here, though? I still like it here but it’s nothing compared to what it once was. Back then I LOVED it. If something could offer that I would jump ship yesterday and never look back.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The motto hasn't been "the simple image sharer" for quite a long time…

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sadly, nothing is free, and bills need to be paid with money.

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

Point taken, but it still sucks they provide less service than what they were originally built for and they keep adding more ads.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The site is still free so, we’ve got that going for us.

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For real, the loss of direct linking was an intentional product change.

8 months ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 1

Do you think this was done to reduce the amount of hamsters Imgur employs.

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If I had to guess, it would be to drive more traffic to the entire gallery for ad revenue rather than serving a single image on its own.

6 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Has it ever not been a for profit company?

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yes. When Imgur started it was not designed to make money. There were no ads, there was no Emerald tier. There was literally zero way for Imgur to collect or receive money at all.

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

When quora started it was the same. But it was always intended to make money. Build up the user base and establish itself first, then activate the revenue streams.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Hoping one day there will be a way to monetize your project is different from what you said ("has Imgur ever been a not for profit" - or pretty close to that). I stand by my reply: when it started, Imgur wasn't even for revenue, much less profit. Probably they hoped to monetize somehow in the future, but that's not the same thing as being for-profit.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

This is no longer a life supporting planet, it's a profit making death trap :(

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, you're the product

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I’ve heard rumors to that effect. If true?

Well, I’ll have to move on.

8 months ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 2

I joined for the same reason. You gotta do a workaround but you can still get the jpg and hotlink to imgur. You just gotta open the image you uploaded in a browser like Firefox (NOT the imgur app), long tap it and from there you'll have the link you need. Just hit "copy link" and you're good to go.

There's also an app in the Play store called "Upload Images to Imgur". It only works with jpg unfortunately but it's a simple and straightforward image uploader.

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was more of a social media website than an image hosting one when I made my first account back in 2012

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

At least one imgur user must be clever enough to remake the site from its pre-enshittification days. I've been looking for an alternative for a while, because it's just worse by the day.

8 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

There are ways to download older versions of imgur but not a clue if the posting will be different there.
