Thank You @mistersavage for saying what needed to be said!!!

Or have the sense to say it themselves, to their school superintendents!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Commercial art really stuck with me. Lots of calligraphy. Jobs took calligraphy, and look what it did for him. I'm in hard drive R&D.

Let's just make the tests easier so everyone does well. And then wonder why we fail compared to the rest of the world

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

My school still has band and shop... And we r a public school 2 b4 anyone asks

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

All public highschools I know of have shop and band though. Source~highschooler

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Why not teach kids skills and how to take tests. They'll need both anyway.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As a teacher, YES! THIS! Please do this! And make sure we fund it properly, so the schools actually have the space, materials, tools, instruments, and teachers to do it properly.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was in band, my first year we had 44 students. My last year, there were 12. Band disappeared because kids stopped caring.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Band taught me a lot, though some of the lessons were quite painful.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was one of the last shop classes in my school I got so far ahead of everyone else I love working with my hands

Savage

Teach kids applied, hands on skills instead of reciting textbooks in general. Fewer lectures, more labs. Kids need tactile experience.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

In my English classroom we simulate real-world environments: corporations, United Nations, zombie apocalypse, etc.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had people in my high school engineering class that literally did not know how to use an Allen wrench or a flathead screwdriver.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't get me started on Philips-head screwdrivers or Torx.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Something something the current school system values grades not learning

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

But schools still have all that stuff right???

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I can say confidently that I have become much more intelligent seeking knowledge myself than learning it from school.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a teacher, I would love to see students graduate high school as fully assimilated citizens to function in society.

9 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 2

That would be excellent! I am 27 and still get treated like I am in grade school. Society needs to encourage maturation.

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

I may not have the specific knowledge but I graduated with the intellectual tools needed to to teach myself. I don't get why people complain

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I'd love to get the bureaucratic nightmare out of the classroom so that you have the freedom to do your job and actually teach kids.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yeah when I graduated hs I was so lost and had no idea how to adult .....

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Me too. I fucked up

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I got really lucky that my husband is good at adulting, otherwise i would have been lost.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's what college should be for, as a transition between childhood and adulthood. Too bad a lot of colleges disagree...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Liberal arts colleges...oh you're hear for a medical degree? Here take 5 core classes along with bio and chem AND two labs, because

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Philosophy and dance are important requirements for that. Also we get to fail you if you're overwhelmed and for some reason that's good

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They should have a mandatory life course where they talk about adult things like taxes, car/health insurance, how to change a tire, etc

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

What's "band and shop"?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Band as in concert, symphonic, orchestra, jazz etc... and shop is woodshop, autoshop, etc...

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Marching....

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Shoot man I was thinking band classes. My school didn't have a class for marching band.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My school and my university did.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't necessarily think schools need more vocational classes, but classes need to have more hands on experience.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh except one thing @mistersavage , Football is more important apparently and thus all the money has to go to that instead. Wish I were-

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

in canada right now honestly.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea but that doesn't get the school any funding, in fact costs them alot of money. Whole system needs an overhaul :P

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Its true. All the best tools in our shop class were unusable due to lack of funding.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Teachers already know this. It's the politicians and bureaucracy that are fixated on tests and numbers and things that they can measure.

9 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

As a teacher, this is completely accurate. Do people think we LIKE giving tests?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They already knew it since the 70s. Thats when we learned of ur studies and changed our school system according those; Now we're top ranking

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And we test too, but these tests have no actual effect, even if you get grades coz they are not recorded; Only one test matters at 18y/o. >>

I am from Finland. I found a blog from an american teacher that moved 2 Finland & under this comment I will put my favourite posts from him

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thank you! I almost went to Finland for my Masters degree because of your educational systems.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why you didn't come? :(

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

PS. I also PM'd you the full list of my bookmarks from this blog, for some reason a lot of my links got deleted :(

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

my school had an electronics class where we learned how to read resistor colors and work on circuit boards most fun I had next to scienceLab

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Reading resistor colors!? Wow that does sound fun.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same here. We also had metal fabrication class and woodwork class. Most fun i've had in school

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I learned all that, how to solder etc and now I can't remember any of it. I would love to relearn it all.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Soldering seems to be kind of like riding a bike. I'll not solder anything for a year or two, then need to do something and it works.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The real question is what school did you go to that didn't even have band?

9 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 4

Many inner city schools across US cut band and other classes to save money (but magically afford new football jerseys every year)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The sad truth is, due to budget cuts, band/orchestra and other music programs (In addition to art) have been cut.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

What is band and what is shop? As an European - I'm totally lost what those things even mean in this context.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not one I'd ever want to go to.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dunno, but I';m pretty sure my years in band did nothing for my ability to pass any test other than music.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

right?! that was my question..never even heard of a school that doesnt have band..

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Michigander here. Lots of controversy here years ago about some schools losing music programs due to economy crash.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Philadelphia did not have any either, Philly public school anyways.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Went to imhotep was lucky enough to get choir, African drum and dance and capoeira for extra curricular, wish we had shop tho

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm fairly sure that having a school band is a UK and US thing for the most part, certainly not in mainland Europe (afaik).

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

A music band? what?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Marching band style, but yes, music.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh, we had a chourus

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My school literally has a rock band, it's pretty cool

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mine didn't. Of course there was only 100 kids from 7th grade to 12th and people that might have been in band were playing sports.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I went to a magnet school. All I learned was too many dudes at a science high school. Lots of 4s strutting about like 10s

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Want kids to care about parabolas in math class? Teach them rocket science.

9 years ago | Likes 161 Dislikes 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gj8IA6xOpSk#t=9m18s Watch the whole thing if you can but I cut to the focus.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah it's not exactly roc... Wait, never mind...

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As a space scientist can confirm

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just give them Kerbal Space Program.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And a link to Scott Manley's Youtube channel

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

First day of rocket science. Shit doesn't actually follow parabolas, because of relativity. :(

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

See how much we learned?!?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Kerbal Space Program

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But we can't seem to get them through Algebra and Geometry.

9 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

You can do rocket science w/ Algebra.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Agreed. Disproving people can be fun. Prove that the earth is round it's pretty simple. A lot of Internet conspiritards to prove wrong.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good point - get them interested in rockets, and teach them the equations, then teach them how they work.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Or give them Kerbal Space Program

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And pray we don't run out of school year.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It might take some kids 1 year to finish, and some kids 10 years. Then they go onto higher education.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

physics

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Physics is just applied mathematics.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Physics is why I love math classes.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, but there's also the part where you need to figure out what kind of maths you actually need.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You could teach them how parabolic flight paths are used to simulate zero gravity.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

damn, I think they call that rocket science. Well shit.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wait, what?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Careful, that's how Wernher Von Braun got started

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

And once you get him started he ends up in Alabama working on ways to send Ohioans to the moon.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

And makes Space Camp, just because.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Von Braun was dead before space camp began. He had the idea for it but it started five years after his death. 1

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Space and Rocket Center is the shit, though. On my folks lifetime membership so I get in free.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And some day, these inspired, educated kids may complete his dream of getting rid of Ohio.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

One can only hope.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or at least very basic projectile physics

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I suck at test taking, but damn it I can weld well

9 years ago | Likes 102 Dislikes 1

Fuck yeah metal work for life!!!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Bridges, pipelines, ships & buildings won't weld themselves.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So how did you do on your welding exam!? The world needs to know!!!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, passed the classes in HS and college. Never did an LA or AWS cert, so couldn't say there. Have only done practical certs

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, one of those skills will get you a career. And it ain't the test taking one.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I suck at welding, but damn it i can test well

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i am incredibly good at test taking and incredibly bad at everything else

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I bet you make more money than me then: I can fix anything, can work out interplanetary gravity transfers but cant take tests :C

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

trust me. you lucked out.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm good with my hands and do tests well, but when it comes to writing, fuck it all.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Handwriting? Cause I'm pretty much the same

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Handwriting and writing essays.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah I can do essays as long as I get to type. Fuck writing

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

me too lol I can draw, weld, just about any thing crafty but when it comes to my hand writing you need 2 ciphers and a codex.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was taught cursive in grade 1, then nothing else from then on. My handwriting didn't improve much after that.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had cursive in 3rd and switch between it and print mid sentence a lot.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How about welding tests, because welders need to RE certify all the time

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Depends on the job. My job doesn't require certs. Just have to weld a quality bead

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The welders I work with make about 150,000 per year but need their certs up to date

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Get me an application please. Thank you

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

lol just need to join the UA local 179 and move to Saskatchewan
