The Image that started this off

@ArchQuantum challenged @ProjectHelios to a duel. They both would write a short story using that image as the basis of the story. @DwightSchruteismyhero would make sure the terms of the duel were followed.

This is an alt account so it won’t be about points.

Now to deliver the goods; the following is the short story by ProjectHelios:

The short story written by ArchQuantum is as follows:

I've never appreciated the grim reapers until now. Hug :(

Both are wonderful, but the second one takes the trophy here for me..

8 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 0

The second is way better

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

TL:DR.... favourite this for later reading when you have time or get your ass back up there now, both of them are an interesting perspective

8 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 2

I love the idea of a walk that purifies on the way to heaven. Anyone can get in but the walk is harder for every sin.

8 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

the second is great

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Both were good. But definitely prefer the second one. Actually got teary eyed for Death.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Everybody's saying that the first one is dead like me but it reminds me more of "On a pale horse" by Piers Anthony. Which is a great novel.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

I thought the same thing! Actually motivated me to start re-reading the book.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The first one is basically Dead Like Me.

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

Nice

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Just went and upvotes all of @ArchQuantum 's posts as a thanks for making that story

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Reminds me a little of Dead Like Me.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

You're a constipator, peanut, you disturb my shit and that's annoying.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Actually that isn't pepper, that's chemicals.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm hoping the second one is what really happens. Because that is both beautiful and sad. I have tears in my eyes. Thank you for sharing!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I liked both of them. The last is the winner though it was too good. I'd definitely read more by both.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I LIKE WHAT YOU GOT.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

The second story is a more Abrahamic retelling of the concept of Bodhisattva, enlightened souls that return to samsara to guide others up.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Am I the only one that keeps hearing Bill Doors voice?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Phenomenal idea with the sin purification and how to describe it within the body. THAT is some creative writing.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

The clear winner here is the second <3 Outside the duel, both are wonderful

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hands down @archquantum. That was amazing.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The second! The seconds better, they're both good but I prefer the second

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I actually loved both of these, but I think I prefer the second.

8 years ago | Likes 449 Dislikes 1

I thought the second was more meaningful.

8 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 0

The second one much better and more original.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

I'm actually trying to write one about a boy falling in love with a girl who's the personification of Death.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I kinda teared up when I finished the second.

8 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

The second is amazing, I welled up and all

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Better written I would say honestly.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The second one fits the theme better and it's just more original, but I'm not saying the first one was bad though.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The second one followed the prompt more, while the first felt more like the beginning to an action/comedy book for teens/young adults.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Plus it's rather chaotic, to me at least. Lot of room for improvement.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Aye, most definitely. As a small-time editor of fanfics, the first had no real structure, while the second flowed nicely.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I'm interested in your process/mentorship! Was wondering if you have some tips.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm trying to write a story about a boy falling in love with a girl who's a personification of Death. But I'm stuck.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sure, I can help give some tips. Though, don't expect too many big words; writing/editing's more a hobby than a job, and I didn't Major. ;P

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

+1 for @ArchQuantum

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I still like the idea of Death as an overworked salary man with a garbage bag. "Should've ducked idiot, get in the bag."

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Writer 1 here. I have decided to build on this, and will be linking here for at least the first few chapters

8 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 2

Try to make it a little less conversation heavy and watch your punctuation and your grammar, it'll read more smoothly :)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Your story would work great in an RP. One person writes as Death, another as Death's replacement. Each time the writer of Death [1/2]

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...has to hand over the RP to the replacement. The RP would only ever involve a couple people but over its life involve dozens.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I used to be super.involved in a scifi fantasy rp with a close freind. At one time we each had 3 plotlines and 12 characters. 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean between the two of us, not each, but unfortunatly the freimdship fell through hard. I miss it all the time tho... 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Happens to the best of us, I used to rp often with some old friends, we got involved in a weird friendship/relationship, things ended hard

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Send me the link and I'll update the post.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Dude. That was an amazing read. Please update us with more chapters :D

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'll be sending a link too

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Absolutely. I forgot to thank everyone, including you, as well.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Have you read "Mort" by Terry Pratchett? It'd be worth a read.. it's the story of Death taking on an apprentice..

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I haven't. The big thing i want to write about 8s making life wilorth while, so the whole death thing is really just a vehicle.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm about halfway through it but I'd still recommend it. So far it's more about a butterfly effect type thing, def. not just about Death.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can see how that fits in

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm sure yours will be different, it's just super relevant because I'm reading it right now. I look forward to seeing progress! Good luck!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Neat! I n that case, ahem "Call me Dotty and you die!"

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Im not sure i get that reference

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The Animaniacs: Yacko, Wacko, and Dot. Who has a tagline "Call me Dotty and you Die". It's my dot.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh yep. Its been a while. I know it dropped on Netflix not too long ago

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When ever Death is mentioned as a person I always go to Terry Pratchett's Death.

"Despite rumour, Death isn't cruel- merely terribly, terribly good at his job."

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

SAME!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm making my way through Discworld for the first time. Death is easily one of my favorite characters out of any books I've read.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes!! I always go there too

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think death is represented more as a neutral/nice than bad. People have a bad image of it but representing it as bad would be too simple

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"How do you get all these coins?" IN PAIRS.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I jump to Piers Anthony's On a Pale Horse. That was the first personification of death I ever read.

I'm commenting for a later read!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The first story reminded me of that book.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I can't upvote that book enough!

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I love the Incarnations of Immortality so much. My favorite interpretations of those figures ever.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Does anyone know the origin of the quote, "you can be a king or a chimney sweeper, but everybody dances with the grim reaper"?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Last words of Robert Alton Harris. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Alton_Harris

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you sir

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mine is death parody from bill and Ted bogus journey!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They should make a website called Literagur where this is an actual thing. People write short stories based on pictures, gifs and memes?

8 years ago | Likes 65 Dislikes 1

Then compete for upvotes and down votes based on the story quality. Writers would eat that shit up! Someone make an app...go on

8 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

http://365tomorrows.com/ is the closest I know as far as a website for short stories.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I would gladly contribute to this.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I used to know a site like that, but it was mostly focused around fanfiction for the Inheritance Cycle, though original stories DID exist

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately, it died a slow death years ago. Now the closest thing is fanfiction.com (?)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wattpad.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I remembered trying that once here on imgur and those dead fuckers down vote me saying blah blah this is an image site. Name calling & shit

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

imgur is fickle about some things, back in the day dumps were few and far between and often got downvoted, now they are all over the place

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

So true. Temperamental.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh wow the second one I loved. The old soul and the man that keeps going back. Would have been crazy of he had so much sin he had to make1/2

8 years ago | Likes 264 Dislikes 2

I kinda got the feeling that the guy helping people once was Lucifer who commited the ultimate sin

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Or Jesus, taking on the sin of the world.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

That's what I was thinking too as I was reading it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh shit, thats pretty great

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I got the feeling it could be Adam.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yeah, Adam would work too

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Those trips before he went into heaven but the fact that he just wanted to makes it sweet 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 115 Dislikes 2

Kind of reminded me of the story on here where people get physically scarred every time they lie

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

"You'll be okay."

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Why do you have no posts????????

Kinda hoping for more of the first one.

8 years ago | Likes 168 Dislikes 1

Reminds me of a TV series (anime) called yami no matsuei

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Check out Piers Anthony's 'Incarnations of Immortality' series until someone write more of the first one.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm sure he would oblige you if you're comment got enough upvotes.

8 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

I don't want to be an ass, but is autocorrect to blame for "you're / your" mistakes? I feel like it's starting to spread more as of late.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

It's possible, I know I trusted predictive text when I went with you're

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Easy way to tell: Read what you wrote but replace you're with you are. If it makes sense, you're good.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Really ? You liked it that much?

8 years ago | Likes 92 Dislikes 0

Yes! Make an e book ^_^

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Dude, please do more. I'd buy the shit out of a book with that premise!

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Yes.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Do it. Please?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes please! It reminds me of one of my own short stories with a similar premise, but a much different twist that I really enjoyed.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It was great! The concept was wonderful and genuinely a brand new idea to me.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mooooooore

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Im happy to say i will be writing a book

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thats awesome! Looking forward to reading it!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a great premise and I loved reading it, however the ending fell short a bit / no closure...it would be great to have more. 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/2 However, I'd personally cut back on the swearing a bit -- without context it felt out of place? Cheers!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There really is supposed to be a lot more honestly.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There was a show, "Dead Like Me" that was pretty good with a similar plot

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That was the one with a girl named Georgia and she got killed via falling toilet, right?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yep, that's the one

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The last is beautiful, First is actually an unfinished tv series of people working to take the souls out of the bodies ! forgot the name tho

8 years ago | Likes 476 Dislikes 5

doot for later

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I'm still mad that the show got abandoned u_u

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Dead Like Me I think...

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My first thought was Grim Fandango, but that was no TV series... But similar! Corporate-style grim reaping.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

And one of the absolute best adventure games!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Dead like me which was based on a novel On a Pale Horse by Piers Anthony.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That is totally what i thought of as well.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dead Like Me and Dirty Job. Reminded me of both.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's also a Korean drama that's really good like this called "Goblin." cried my eyes out. Came out last year

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Amazing drama!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've actually never seen it. I dadnt even heard about it till this whole thing.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

It's a good show, you should watch it

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Your writing is good but try to ease into exposition. Alot of what you said in three sentences could be implied in one about something else.

Any good?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

the tv-show's good, avoid at all costs the movie..

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Does it still have Mandy Patinkin?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the show is fantastic. It's dark, funny, and fantastic

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yup. There's a movie, too.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

NO THERE IS NOT !!!!!!! I WILL NOT HEAR OF IT!!!!

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

YES THERE IS! it's just baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Ah man, I got all excited because I never heard of the movie but loved the show. usually bad if it is that old and never heard of it though

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Which is based on a book, "On a Pale Horse" it's one of my favorites

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

^This. It is the Incarnations of Immortality series by Piers Anthony. Fantastic stuff!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0
