This album will give a basic outline / brief history on everyone's favorite mother of dragons' house - Targaryen.
Side note: GRRM plans on releasing a book called Fire and Blood once A Song of Ice and Fire is all published that will be a complete detailed history of the Targaryens (yay!)
Chapter 1: Valyria
I think before we go into the history of the Targaryens themselves it is important to give a brief rundown of Valyria itself. Valyria was located on a peninsula in South Essos.
Across the neck of the peninsula was a ring of volcanoes known as the Fourteen Fires. It is there that the Valyrians discovered dragons. They capitalized on the discovery by using magic to tame them and ride them in battle. It didn't take long before the Valyrians expanded their influence over Essos through the help of their new-found weapons of war.
The Valyrian Freehold was annihilated in a single night of fire and storm, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions destroying the empire. The peninsula was destroyed and fragmented into smaller islands and created the Smoking Sea between them. It is now said to be haunted and few people if any survive traveling to the ruins of Valyria.
Valyrians were masters of magic and craftsmanship. Weapons made from Valyrian steel were crafted with magic to create unparalleled quality. The secret to forging such metal was lost and thus weapons forged with Valyrian steel are highly treasured and extremely rare.
Chapter 2: The Targaryens Escape Doom
The Targaryen house was one of the 40 ancient noble houses who ruled the Valyrian Freehold. Twelve years before the Doom of Valyria Aenar Targaryen's daughter, Daenys, had a vision of a cataclysm that would destroy their home. Aenar was so disturbed by his daughter's vision that he moved his family and their 5 dragons to an island called Dragonstone off the east coast of Westeros. Not only were the Targaryens one of the few families to survive but they were the only dragon riders at all to survive.
There was much pressure on the Targaryens to ally with Volantis, who conquered the rest of the Valyrian colonies that survived the doom, but they for the most part remained in Dragonstone.
Castle Dragonstone actually sits on the face of a volcano. The castle itself was built using advanced Valyrian techniques which are now lost causing it to look unique compared to all other castles of Westeros. The castle is shaped to look like dragons and has thousands of gargoyles adorning it as well.
Chapter 3: Aegon the Conqueror
A hundred years after the Doom, Aegon Targaryen turned his eyes toward the west, deciding he wanted to unite the seven kingdoms under his rule. He and his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya took their dragons and a small force to Blackwater Rush and began the War of Conquest.
Aegon and his sister-wives took their dragons and armies to conquer the seven kingdoms of Westeros. A number of major battles happen during this conquest but I have decided to go into more detail about specific ones in volumes about the other houses. All in all Aegon conquers 6 of the 7 kingdoms and becomes king.
Aegon becomes known as Aegon the Conqueror and founds a new capital city, King's Landing. He has the Red Keep built at King's Landing and uses Dragonstone as the seat of the heir apparent to the Iron Throne. This is also when he gathers the swords of his enemies and has them melted down using the fire from his dragon Balerion the Black Dread.
Fun fact: the 3-heads of the dragon on House Targaryen's sigil represents Aegon and his two wives Rhaenys and Visenya. (Enjoy this cool wallpaper :D!)
Chapter 4: The Mad King
Fast forward almost 300 years and you find yourself at the reign of the infamous Aerys II, The Mad King. This is the king that ruled just before the War of the Usurper / Robert's Rebellion. As I'm sure you've noticed the Targaryens were inbred in order to "keep the bloodlines pure." This of course resulted in a number of Targaryens being a bit bonkers. The Mad King was no exception. He took joy in torturing people, particularly burning them alive, amongst other things.
Aerys II had 3 children through his sister-wife Rhaella, Rhaegar, Viserys, and Daenerys though at this point Daenerys wasn't born yet. Despite Aerys being crazy Rhaegar was, for the most part, beloved by the people.
Even though he was already married and had two children of his own, Rhaegar met Lyanna Stark at a tournament and ended up becoming enamored with her and kidnapped her shortly thereafter. (It can be argued that they ran off together depending on how you look at the circumstances.) This event sparked Robert's Rebellion.
Robert Baratheon was betrothed to Lyanna Stark and thus Rhaegar running off with his beloved (book readers don't worry I'm saving more of the details for other house backgrounds!) sparked him to lead a rebellion against the Targaryens. Also did I mention his dad was batshit?
Robert defeated Rhaegar in the Battle of the Trident, which caused the then pregnant Queen Rhaella and young prince Viserys to flee to Dragonstone where Daenerys was born. Rhaella dies in childbrith but the children flee further to the Free Cities. Unfortunately Rhaella died while giving birth to the princess.
*Thanks to @lotrmith for my Daeny's birthplace mixup! It is now corrected.
While holed up in the Red Keep Jaime Lannister, one of Aerys's kingsguard takes it upon himself to kill Aerys II while he is ranting for the city to be burned to the ground. Rhaegar's wife and two children who hadn't fled King's Landing were also slaughtered and Robert Baratheon becomes the new King.

Just started watching GOT for the first time. These posts were the final straw!
FatLobyte
Have fun! It's a great show. Though beware, GRRM will bathe in your tears.
Punnilingus
Wait. GRRM isn't sure if he's going to survive all the way through the Ice and Fire series yet he has another book planned anyway???
kurastwolf
More like he always had X number of books planned, but he writes so slowly that he's just run out of time for the story.
Habis
I want a whole post on Hodor written entirely in Hodor.

Fire and Blood, a history of House Targaryen, coming to a bookshelf near you in 2057

That's about when the 6th ASOIAF book will come out anyway.

At this rate I think it's a bit optimistic of GRRM to think he'll live long enough to finish ASOIAF never mind start something new.

Just like Robert Jordan,
lotrmith
It should probably be noted that Rhaegar's murdered wife was Elia Martell. It's a pretty big deal in this upcoming season.
BalerionTheBlackDread
Can't wait for Oberyn "The Red Viper" Martell! Such a badass.
steely94
HER NAME WAS ELIA OF DORNE.

Spoiler alert? This is pre-book history. Current events show Oberyn Martell (brother to Elia) is coming to town. Kind of a big deal.
jormuttar
Not to that, to mine underneath.
Tokotork
"A bit bonkers" is somewhat of an understatement when it comes to the king who literally almost destroyed King's Landing with wildfire.
steely94
He was 'a bit bonkers' in the Wall is 'a bit chilly', Gregor Clegane is 'a bit tall' and Dolorous Edd is 'a bit gloomy'.

Targaryan instead of a Stark. It is also backed up by the fact that Eddard is known for his loyalty, he would never betray Catelyn Stark.
Hannya
There are rumors that Jon Snow's mother is in fact Lyanna Stark's child instead of Ned Stark's child. This would make Jon Snow a 1/?
Hannya
It is FURTHER backed up by the fact that Jon Snow was brought back after the war, and the fact that Ned couldn't speak of the mother. 3/3
Sarumanandtheamazingtechnicolourdreamcoat
And it makes sense w/ the timeline. Also, he never does tell what he promised Lyanna on her deathbed.

Real history is pretty crazy if you look into the details. Henry VII *had* to be a source of inspiration for the Mad King!

Nuh-uh. Breaking up the Catholic Church, having TWO wives executed, fathering ~20 children, 3 survived- Harry 8 was bonkers (typo earlier)

Real history has disappointingly less magic and dragons.

if you want interesting history, read up on Rome. emperor Nero liked to dress up like a wolf and bite people at parties and was (1/?)

hilariously inept at assassinating his mother. Caesar boinked his way through the Roman aristocracy and was rumored to have had a gay (2/?)

affair with the king of a Roman allied state, which shamed him for the rest of his life. Plus there's a lot in the Republican era which(3/?)
gonephishin7
is really pertinent to today's politics. (End)
afistfulofchickens
Though he's referenced/described fairly infrequently in the books...I always thought Rhaegar was hot as shit. /swoon. That man.
FatLobyte
I was so deeply sad that he died :( He would have been an awesome king, and much of the crap that followed could'Ve been prevented.
skwawkward
Aaahaha I'm so pleasantly surprised that someone mentioned this.
littlelum
Heath Ledger would have been the best Rhaegar.
afistfulofchickens
Agreed! I always thought A Knight's Tale might have planted that idea in my head. :P
WhimAndHer
Could you add a family tree of the houses to your posts?
prateekbagri

House Targaryan isn't a family tree; it's a fucking stick.
MisterAlex5000
they're pretty much in the back of each book.

I will start doing that! :D

i am dissapoint that you didn't mention the names of the 3 dragons.

Awesome!

Another question: Why did Rhaegar marry and have children? Traditionally, wouldn't he have wed Daenerys once she was born and of age?
mablesyrup
Source? Are there others??
Didsomeonesaycake
ehm this has a small spoiler. Depending on how you read it.
Forthelaughterofchickens
So Robert and Dayneris are second cousins? Interesting
JackJackAttack
Yeah Robert had the best claim to the throne compared to Ned and Jon Arryn due to his relation to the Targaryans, hence he became king.
guzzball
Question if someone can answer: Why do many of them not say who the mother is? The line just comes straight from the father.

He's not alive. Qyburn has some evil sorceries and shit yo.

Ok let me rephrase..he is going to return to the story physically
Cambino
I don't disagree. I just wanted to say "sorceries and shit, yo."
lordpsykojo
Too soon?

nah, roughly 19 years isn't too soon - as per South Park, give it three years and it'll be funny

"Elia of Dorne. I killed her screaming whelp. Then I raped her. Then I smashed her fucking head in. Like this." (My favorite ASOIAF scene)
woozle
mine too.
TheFlyingHellfish
Even though I came to love Oberyn, this was a great line. My other favorite line is, "Edd, fetch me a block."
SonOfAVondruke
You're skipping over some notable information about the previous few generations before the mad king. Blackfyres, Aegon the Unlikely, etc.
SirCharlestheFifthistheNameofmyPipe
I think he did a pretty good job with the stuff he covered. He obviously put alot of work into it. And you can't cover eeevvverything.
SonOfAVondruke
Sure, but the historical context of the century before the books/show begin are arguably more relevant than the events 200 years prior.
dovahqueen
I think they're making it a bit vague on purpose. People who have read the novels know those stories anyway.
SonOfAVondruke
Certainly, but I suspect people who have read the novels know everything he covers anyways. The historical context gives it all meaning.
thrillfight
My hope is that more people will read if I give them a taste! Hahaha
dovahqueen
I'm currently on the second book. It's spring break so I hope to finish in time to rewatch season 3 before season 4 comes out.
gabot045
There's a lot of stuff to cover. He's doing a great job.
SonOfAVondruke
Indeed he(?) is, and my constructive criticism is not meant to diminish it
thrillfight
Yes I breezed over that unfortunately. I debated on what to include and not include and I was worried about the length, though 1/2
Sidereal218
Oh, and just so you know, Maegor Targaryen built the Red Keep--it was mentioned in the books and show that he killed the workers afterward.
thrillfight
in retrospect I don't think anyone would have complained lol.
ImVeryAngryItsNotButter
Yeah, definitely don't be worried about length, or if nothing else, go all books-4-and-5 and split them in parts. They're crazy fascinating!
kimttar
More is always better! Thanks for these posts. As just a fan of the series it's great to get back story.
SonOfAVondruke
Considering "the War of the Usurper" and "the War of Five Kings" stem directly from some of those events, I think they're worth covering.
standardusernamehere
then why don't you make your own posts?
lozeldatkm
I hesitate to say you "owe" us anything, because you're doing a great service by making these, but you really should do Blackfyre Rebellion.
thrillfight
I plan on doing one that is blackfyre rebellion + dance of the dragons.
lozeldatkm
I can't wait!
lotrmith
Daenerys was not born in the Free Cities, but rather on Dragonstone during a storm. Hence she is called Daenerys Stormborn.
laurizzle7
I believe she was born on a ship. On her way to the free cities, that is why she is called Stormborn. :)
HeWhoPours
Was going to note this, but am hours behind the post.
SnarkyScience
Also there is another surviving branch of this house...
itzjed
Also, it was Maegor the Cruel who built the red keep. Aegon's son by Visenya, who earned the name because he killed all the architects (1/2)
itzjed
And people who worked on it to protect the knowledge all of its hidden passages and secrets (2/2)
quinoness447
Good catch! However, she did grew up in Pentos (one of the Free Cities) with Illyro Mopatis and her brother Viserys.
Dendromeda
Most of her childhood was spent in braavos in "the house with the red door"...
FlatPlutoSociety
I think they bounced around a lot in the years after the rebellion and got to Pentos soon before the beginning of Game of Thrones.
EmilyJemily
Yeah a lot of her childhood was spent in Bravos, and they had been staying with Illyrio for I think a couple years or so
MiloCoatedBanana
let them read the books! they dnt deserve this!
Eowyneb
also Rhaegar's wife's death is a ittle slim here... it is a huge deal you know.
PacManCombustion
Yes, but one that mostly affects Dorne/House Martell, I think, so maybe it'll be covered there
Eowyneb
I wonder if it would be covered at all since we have yet to see them on the tv show yet. :/
thrillfight
Whoops, you're absolutely right. Sorry I was typing this one up on no sleep. :(
Danibelle903
The last fact is also untrue. This history is not cannon up through dance of dragons.
Naseth
Yer good OP. The whole post was well-delivered and you have us all craving more.
thrillfight
Thanks for the correction, by the way!
MacSuibhne13
You spelt "Jaime" wrong.
thrillfight
Thanks! Will correct that now.
lunaisbestprincess
Pardon my ignorance, but isn't Daenerys her title not her name?
WhatIsHappeningRightNow
Nope, Daenerys is her name. Khaleesi is her title, but people seem to confuse them.
lunaisbestprincess
Aha! That's what it is! Thank you :D
lotrmith
Daenerys is her name. Daenerys Stormborn, Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms (1)
lotrmith
Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, The Unburnt, Mother of Dragons are her titles (among others). (2)
lunaisbestprincess
Yes but i know people often call her by another name, but it was title
itzjed
Khaleesi is the title she has for marrying khal drogo. That's what many fans call her because Daenerys is hard to say and rarely used

Daeneris of the Hamgaryen house, mother of bacon, breaker of steaks, the one that's medium rare, queen of the bbq

Many believe that to be a red herring. As do I.
loudnoyeses
i think the biggest red herring is the perfumed seneschal. could be anyone or even a ship. Selaesori Qhoran = Fragrant Steward. 1/2
loudnoyeses
2/2 could also be Varys or Reznak. But I think Salt and Smoke is the salt from the sea and the smoke is either from 2/2
loudnoyeses
the volcano behind dragonstone or the dragons being born. 3/3
